Rivers of the Night - Chapter 706
706: Layers 706: Layers The man shrunk back from the gaze, not wanting to suddenly be under the same sort of scrutiny.
There was certainly a culture of breaking rules, but so long as it didn’t cross certain bottom lines, it was usually ignored and the higher-ups looked the other way.
But clearly, this time, the rules that Savali had flouted were costing them.
Whether that was true or not had yet to be confirmed, but they were fairly certain.
“If this person isn’t truly Savali, then how would they know of something she’s hidden from everyone else?” “Unless she’s been captured?” the secondary figure said slowly.
The man fell into silence.
He didn’t know Savali intimately, but he knew about assassins who reached this level.
They didn’t break easily, and they certainly wouldn’t break in as little time as this.
It hadn’t even been a day since Savali was almost caught.
If a torturer could break her in that time, they would have a name that reverberated across the universe.
And they certainly wouldn’t be going all out for an expert at Savali’s level.
At least, that was what the man who caught Theron thought.
As for the secondary figure… He knew that the matters surrounding this assassination were far from simple.
In fact, there were things this involved that could embroil entire galaxies in war.
“Destroy this room.
Until whatever hidden secret is found here, I want this entire section cordoned off.” The man frowned but didn’t say anything as the figure vanished.
If this matter was so important, should a Soul Mancer with experience like him be the one looking?
The man couldn’t help but feel that this was the least efficient way to do things… Unless all of this was so sensitive that he didn’t actually want to find the hidden exit at all.
The man’s heart skipped a beat.
Had he just gotten himself into trouble he couldn’t afford to get himself into?
What would happen to him if he actually found the exit?
Theron looked at the spatial ring in his hand intently, his eyes glazed over in focus.
The Shonagh Clan was a Clan of powerful Soul Mancers.
There was no doubt that their methods of protecting their valuable items were nothing short of top-notch.
As difficult as it would be to break into a normal spatial ring, this was definitely orders of magnitude more difficult.
But there was good reason Theron wanted to do it here.
In case there was a tracking function or something of the sort, doing it here would expose the assassin’s guild he didn’t care much about to begin with.
As for himself, he would remain relatively free.
Even if they didn’t find the entrance to the assassin’s guild, they would just assume that the assassin never left the scene of the crime, which would make sense as a clever way of avoiding detection.
There was also a future where Theron wasn’t able to unearth the secrets of this spatial ring at all and could just leave it be.
‘There doesn’t seem to be an immediate tracking function on it.
However, that might not continue to be the case if I break into it…’ The good news about having such a powerful soul?
Theron could use a forceful method to break into the ring whenever he wanted.
There were no restrictions you could fit on such a small object that he couldn’t overcome with a thought, especially since it would be designed for a Quasi-Dome of Heaven expert like Chen to open with ease on a day-to-day basis.
No matter how powerful the defenses, the fact Chen could open it would always be a vulnerability.
But the question was whether or not there were any hidden dangers to using force.
Theron could just ask the Nightingale Ancestor Bird, but he didn’t do so immediately, trying to train this new sense of his.
Many might believe that Theron was skipping steps, and maybe they’d be right.
He didn’t even take the time to truly master the Bronze Mancy level of this new formation doctrine he had, let alone understand enough to break a formation that was nearly at the Dome of Heaven level.
But Theron now had an odd sixth sense for formations that hadn’t been there before.
It wasn’t just because of the Doctrines that had fused into his soul, but instead something that clicked for him when he was in the process of gaining their acknowledgment in the first place.
It was a rhythm to the world that he could sense-a rhythm that was consistent whether he was looking at a Bronze Formation or a Cloud one.
It wasn’t about understanding the runes and sigils; it was about feeling out the Laws tied to the formation and grasping the methods in which they had been tweaked and changed in order to accommodate what paths they were following as well.
That was why, with a soul as powerful as his own, Theron was able to learn several things very quickly about the ring.
First, it had not just two, but three layers to it.
There were three separate spaces you could access with your mind, and if you weren’t careful, you could easily fall into the dummy space.
This dummy space would trap your mind and leave you completely in a daze until your soul ran out of energy.
At that point, you would directly die.
Second, of the two other layers, one was a normal space which held most of Chen’s most common items and commonly used treasures-probably the items he used for fighting day-to-day battles.
However, the second of the two layers had yet another layer of protection on it, one that did have a tracking function on it when it was breached.
This second layer was far more powerful, as it wasn’t designed for Chen to access easily.
In fact, it seemed more like an inheritance he wouldn’t be able to touch until he became a Dome of Heaven expert.
It was this layer that, if Theron breached carelessly, he would find an imprint he couldn’t get rid of on his soul… ‘Or was it?’
