Chapter 466: A War of Accusations and Insults
Third Person’s POV

A sharp wave of gasps rippled through the square as they understood that this creature was the one who had attacked Ethan secretly, and he seemed to be none other than the senior deacon who had presided over today’s gathering.

Yet the skeletal demon did not answer.

He neither attacked Ethan nor acknowledged the powerful woman in red.

He simply stood there, unmoving, his hollow, death-tinged eyes fixed on her as if waiting for something only he understood.

Suddenly, the lady in red slowly descended from the air and floated down before the bulky earth deacon.

Her crimson robes rippled gently as if stirred by an unseen tide, and her gaze settled on him with an icy pressure that made his throat tighten.

“You,” she said coldly, her voice sharp and regal at the same time, “tell me exactly what happened here.”

The earth demon stiffened and hastily saluted, his heavy armor clanking as he straightened his back.

“Yes, Lady Raven,” he shouted with forced confidence.

“The moment we gathered the new joiners in the square…”

He immediately began recounting the events, but his version was carefully twisted, and the crowd of young freshers who had clearly witnessed everything firsthand could clearly sense the distortion in his words.

He conveniently skipped over the now deceased young lord Jack Wilds’ provocative remarks, his aggressive advances, and his open threats, dismissing them as trivial and unworthy of mention.

Instead, he painted Ethan as the sole culprit, portraying him as a lawless and arrogant offender who had shamelessly gone after another man’s woman by carrying on an illicit affair with young lord Jack’s supposed fiancée, and openly defied the academy’s rules and his elders, all while being “exposed” before everyone.

With dramatic exaggeration layered over every sentence, he described how Ethan had then brutally beaten young lord Jack out of humiliation and plunged the square into chaos without any justification.

While the crowd of new joiners could sense something was off, the older students, deacons, and onlookers immediately turned their gazes toward Ethan with disdain, righteous anger, and open disgust.

To them, it looked as though Ethan had stolen Jack’s fiancée and had committed an unforgivable betrayal, and then violently assaulted an “innocent” young noble.

Ethan felt those hostile gazes wash over him, but he ignored them completely, as they meant nothing to him.

However, the dehumanizing, contempt-filled looks did not stop at him.

They soon fell upon Lucy, and people recognized her as Jack’s fiancée, and when they saw her clutching Ethan’s hand and standing so close to him with worry on her face for him, their fury exploded.

Whispers spread like wildfire, fingers pointed, and vicious words, like ‘slut’, ‘bitch’, were murmured as they cast her as a shameless traitor and a seductress who had betrayed her rightful partner.

Seeing this, Ethan’s eyes turned cold, and in that instant, the earth deacon who had twisted the truth in such a malicious manner was already sentenced to death in Ethan’s heart for daring to humiliate and trample on the dignity of his woman.

But before he could go further, the noble lady in red raised a hand slightly and cut him off mid-sentence.

Her eyes swept slowly over the devastated square as she asked in a calm yet chilling tone,

“Where is this Jack Wilds? I would like to confirm what you just said with him personally.”

Her blatant refusal to accept his account without verification made the earth demon’s expression stiffen.

A flicker of humiliation and irritation crossed his face as he felt the pitying and mocking gazes of many people around him.

Still, he nodded and turned to search for Jack, but to his shock, Jack was nowhere to be found.

He looked around frantically, his eyes scanning the ruined garden, the broken paths, and the clusters of students, but neither Jack nor a single one of his underlings could be seen anywhere.

Several eager young men from the fresher crowd rushed forward, hoping to curry favor with the beautiful lady in red by helping find Jack, yet they returned moments later with pale faces as they found no trace of Jack Wilds or any of his followers.

It was at that moment that Ethan’s raspy, weakened voice cut through the square, instantly drawing everyone’s attention to him.

“It’s no use,” he said quietly but clearly.

“You won’t find him.”

Hearing Ethan’s voice, the earth demon spun around and roared at him with fury flashing in his eyes.

“Who permitted you to speak, you rebellious brat? And what do you mean we won’t find him?”

His voice grew sharper and darker.

Suddenly, he pretended to be filled with horror as he pointed at him with a shaky finger.

“D–Did you kill them while that sweeping darkness covered the square?!”

The moment those words left his mouth, a wave of horror rippled through the new joiner crowd while the older crowd frowned in confusion, though enlightenment appeared on some of their faces as they remembered the giant dark dome they had seen covering the square.

Dozens of eyes from the new joiner crowd, mostly men, turned toward Ethan while being filled with suspicion, fear, and barely hidden malice.

Some of them began whispering loudly, while others openly voiced their accusations.

“Yes… he must have murdered that poor young lord.”

“This man is truly vile. He didn’t even spare those he merely quarreled with.”

“I knew it. From the moment I saw him, I knew he was no good!”

Yet Ethan did not react to the earth demon’s rage or the poisonous voices of the crowd.

He ignored them all.

Instead, his attention focused sharply on the final part of the earth deacon’s accusation, and a realization slowly took shape in his mind.

It seemed that none of them truly understood what had happened when the dark storm erupted.

The sudden blackout, the blinding darkness that had swallowed the square, had hidden everything so completely that they believed it was some mysterious external phenomenon and not his own power.
