Chapter 440: Selection of the Societies
Third Person’s POV

Women sighed in disbelief and pity while men laughed under their breath and whispered to each other and wondering why a man as handsome as Ethan would openly hold such an “ugly” girl in his arms.

They clearly recognised him to be the one who had slapped that arrogant vampire girl in the square yesterday, and it was one of the reasons why so many stared at them, but Ethan didn’t even spare them a glance.

He simply kissed Velcy’s forehead and let her trembling settle, and held her petite body until she remembered that they were in public.

Her scarred cheeks reddened as she hurriedly let go and stepped back, an action that only made the surrounding snickers grow harsher as, according to them, her blushing and acting cute was very disgusting in their eyes

Sensing their intentions and ridicule, Ethan’s eyes sharpened.

A blond demon youth standing nearby looked at Velcy with open disgust, as if her mere presence offended him.

He felt Ethan’s cold gaze land on him, but the man didn’t stop sneering.

In fact, his little entourage copied him perfectly with mocking smiles, raised brows, and the same shallow and arrogant expressions plastered over their faces.

Ethan’s jaw tightened in anger, but he forced himself to turn away as this wasn’t the place to ignite a conflict, not with the alarm for everyone to gather ringing through the tower.

Clutching Velcy’s hand protectively, he guided her down the stairs, and soon they reached the third floor, where Lucy had just stepped out of her room.

She froze when she spotted him, and a faint blush colored her cheeks.

Her flustered expression and the way she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, and the softness in her eyes dissolved the irritation that had been building inside him, and he smiled back at her.

Her eyes brightened at his reactions, and without him even saying a word, she drifted toward him and quietly joined the two of them, though they both didn’t notice that Velcy had been looking at the two with a strange expression in her eyes.

Together, they descended the remaining floors until they stepped outside the tower and found themselves in the academy’s grand garden once again, though this time the Sun illuminated every leaf, every pathway, every distant building with breathtaking clarity.

And Ethan finally saw the true immensity of the academy.

It stretched endlessly in every direction, its towers, bridges, and distant halls forming a vast landscape that felt far larger than what the outside world had ever shown.

It was as if the entire academy existed in its own private expanse, dwarfing anything Ethan had imagined from the outside.

But Ethan soon broke free of his brief stupor and guided the two girls toward the shade of a tall tree, its branches swaying gently in the morning breeze.

With their backs against its sturdy trunk, he finally took a proper look at his surroundings, and what he saw made him raise an eyebrow in faint surprise.

The garden, which had looked peaceful moments ago, was now filled with young men and women forming loose circles across the grassy expanse.

They gathered instinctively in clusters based on race and clan, their vibrant banners and distinctive clothing turning the garden into a mosaic of identities and rivalries.

It was reminiscent of the banners he had seen during yesterday’s gathering at the square, though this time the competition in the air felt far more personal, and there was a major difference from yesterday with this group.

And it was the fact that all of them were older members of the academy.

Soon, his gaze landed on Virelle and Lucien among the vampire group, though Victor was nowhere to be seen.

Virelle and Victor had vanished the night before yesterday, leaving him and the two girls behind him alone in the jungle.

But Ethan had not panicked at that situation and had predicted at that time that since the siblings were older members of the academy, he would meet them once he was inside the Sanctum.

Standing with them was the same black-haired woman he had spotted yesterday in the little restaurant, the one who had shared a table with Lucien and Victor while carrying herself with an elegance that was charming and filled with an innate nobility.

As he looked at the, they also noticed Ethan at the same moment he found them.

Virelle’s and Ethan’s eyes met, and Ethan could see the happiness contained with Virelle’s gaze as she looked at him.

And even though Ethan had done such a thing the previous night with Lucy, he acted perfectly natural with her and she could also sense the same happiness and love in them.

Ethan suddenly took a step forward to meet with them, but Virelle subtly raised her hand and signaled him not to come any closer.

A heartbeat later, a soft whisper brushed against his ear, not through sound but through Soul Transmission.

“Stay where you are, Ethan. The deacons here will soon begin the process of the selection for the societies. This is a process every newbie has to go through and it must be done in proper order, so do not move from your spot…”

Understanding her words immediately, Ethan offered her a lighthearted wink and a small smile in acknowledgment as he leaned back against the tree again.

Though Lucien standing behind her noticed his action and visibly stiffened in anger and shot him a glare of pure irritation.

But Ethan didn;t avoid his gaze and met the young man’s stare with a faint, mocking smile of his own, a quick flash of amusement that vanished the next instant.

In response, Lucien gritted his teeth in anger but soon a cruel smile formed on his lips and he muttered in his breath,

“Let’s see for how long you can prance around with that arrogant grin. Soon, Cadell with wipe the floor with your ass and then I will see how much you can smile for the slap you gave to his precious sister…”
