Chapter 527: Why?
Alric stood slowly. “Did he say why?”

The man nodded. “He said that she is the easiest target that could not bring war but enough to start the sparks.”

That froze Alric in his place. His eyes narrowed and the temperature froze around him. Max noticed the chance and stopped. He looked at Alric with concern.

“Now that you know, I am sure you understand why I did not come to you. If not for me, the girl would have died. I did not only give her my phone to contact you a lot, but I also lied to my team about her whereabouts. Or they would have killed her long ago.” Alric closed his eyes and took a long shaky breath. He didn’t respond in words. He simply nodded once.

Then he picked up the photo of Mia, slid it back into his pocket, and walked to the door.

“Wait! what will happen to me now?” the man asked confused,

Max looked back. “Until Nora wakes up, we can not trust your words. So you are going to stay here. But if she confirms it, we will give you a reward and help you in relocating.”

“But I gave you everything I know and i..”

“If you are right, what are you afraid of?,” Alric said without turning around. “If you are against Rhistel, this is the safest place where you could live anyway..”

He paused in the doorway.

“Pray that she wakes up. Because if she doesn’t, your name won’t matter.”

The door closed behind him before he could complain further. Outside, Alric leaned against the wall and closed his eyes. Max stood beside him looking at his broken stature silently.

“Alric! You need to control your emotions. Nora needs you.” Alric nodded but Mac still noticed that he trembled like a broken leaf.

Emma approached slowly with a hopeful look. “Did he talk?”

Alric opened his eyes, colder than before.

“Yes, but we have to be alert. If it was Rhistel, he would not let his targets go easily.” he turned to max. “Do you trust the staff handling Nora? If…”

“I will personally supervise them, cancelling all my other appointments.” that let him breathe for a second. And then he walked away, already planning the next move.

“But that would not be a solution. Would it?” Asked Max in a worried voice when Alric paused.

“No, the best solution is to destroy the threat. I am not just going to destroy Ristel Devrin, I am going to burn everything he ever touched.”

And before they could react, he had already opened the other room and went to see Nora.

The hospital room was silent, save for the soft hum of machines and the steady beeping of Nora’s heart monitor. The lights had been dimmed, and the blue fire diamond still sat on the bedside table in its velvet box, catching glimmers of light and casting soft reflections on the wall.

Natalie sat curled in a corner chair, dozing fitfully when Alric opened the door. Emma did not dare to follow him inside but she did not leave the hallway. She paced outside, occasionally pausing to glance in through the small window. Max had gone to intercept Alric before he did something irreversible.

But Alric? He was still inside the room. He hadn’t moved from her side. One hand loosely held Nora’s, the other resting on his knee. The cold mask he wore with the world was gone now. All that was left was exhaustion and pain.

“I should have been there,” he whispered. “It is all my mistake. I should have at least told you before leaving. I..” a shaky sob escaped his lips.

He wasn’t expecting a response. He hadn’t gotten one in nearly ten hours. But still, he sat and spoke to her as if she could hear him.

“I got that stupid diamond,” he continued, voice low. “I have prepared a surprise that..” His gaze dropped to her cold and unmoving hand.

“I have men watching Ristel now. And the rest who were part of it. They will pay, I swear to you.”

He leaned back in the chair, one hand covering his face.

“I swear on my name, I will make sure no one ever touches you again. So, please, wake up, nora!” Natalie closed her eyes hearing his desperate voice. A lone tear fell from her eyes. If there was any god, she would start believing in them if Nora woke up.

Just as Nat was about to stand up and tell him to wait

“…Alric.” Nat froze, her head snapped up. Alric froze at his place, his head slowly rising..

He stared at her face, frozen. For a second, he thought he had imagined it. But then her fingers twitched.

“Alric!” she said again with her lips cracking as they tried to form the sound.

“I am here,” he said, gripping her hand gently. “Nora, look at me. I am right here.”

Her eyelids fluttered open slowly. Her gaze was unfocused, but her lips curved slightly.

“I knew you would come,” she whispered. “I was waiting for you.”

Alric’s throat tightened. He brushed a strand of hair from her face, unable to hide the tremble in his hand.

“You scared the hell out of me.”

“Water..” Nat ran before Alric could move and brought a glass of water for Nora. She helped her in sitting and Alric brought the glass of water to her lips so that she could take a sip.

Emma peered through the window with eyes widening as she saw Nora’s eyes open. She bolted into the room, almost slipping on the floor as she ran to the bedside.

“Nora!” she breathed. “Oh my god, you are awake. You are okay.”

“Hey, Emma..” Nora smiled faintly.

Emma held her hands and then tears filled her eyes, and she dropped to her knees beside the bed. Natalie joined her, silently wiping her tears and reaching for her friend’s foot, just to feel something tangible.

Alric didn’t move. He just kept holding Nora’s hand.

She turned her eyes toward him again. “You found them?”

He nodded. “And we will find the one behind it too.”
