Chapter 525: Brought The Stars..
Alric’s plane had landed and he hadn’t turned his phone on yet. The smile on his face was addicting. He rubbed his small bag as if he could already imagine Nora’s warm hands in his. She was wearing the perfect engagement ring made of this rare diamond and smiling at him sweetly. God! How he wanted to reach her and propose to her already but that had to stop.
First, he needed to prepare the ring. He sat in the car with a frustrated look that surprised the driver as the man was laughing just a moment ago.
“Go to the hospital now.” he couldn’t wait anymore. He must find Max and send him for the task.
The sleek black car pulled into the hospital’s private lot. Alric stepped out, adjusting the cuff of his coat with a dreamy smile on his face. He had intentionally kept his phone switched off so that no one could remind him about work. If Nora would be worried, that would be much better.
She would easily believe Max when he tells her that he had suffered an accident. She would come running and he would give her a surprise.
The smile bloomed on his face. Soon, he would be with her again and this time he would not let her go.
A velvet case containing the rare blue fire diamond was tucked securely under his arm as he walked inside the hospital.
“Sir, you are here….” Alric frowned when instead of a smile, he saw the ashen face of his bodyguard as if he had seen a ghost. “Where is your phone?’ the words only increased the sense of uneasiness in Alric’s chest.
He looked at the driver and the phone was taken out instantly.
His phone had just been switched on. There were twenty-three missed calls, ten from Max, several from Nora and one from Emma. A cold weight dropped in his stomach. His heart picked up speed, but his face remained unreadable as he strode through the entrance.
The receptionist rose to greet him, recognizing his presence instantly. “Mr. Alric”
“Where is she? What happened to her?” he asked, his voice cutting through the air like ice. The woman was stunned and bit her lips. Her voice trembled as she replied again,
“Room 6E—Trauma Wing. She is stable but critical.” That was all he needed.
Alric walked swiftly down the corridor. Every step sounded louder than the last. Around the corner, he spotted Max with his shirt stained with blood and dirt, pacing like a man possessed. Natalie stood nearby, arms crossed tightly over her chest. Emma was seated on the bench, head bowed, her hands shaking.
He stopped. The silence that followed was suffocating. Max looked up when he heard footsteps, he stiffened at once when he saw Alric walking toward them like a man possessed by evil.
“Alric…”
But Alric’s gaze had already shifted. Through the large observation glass, he saw her.
“Nora.” the word felt gut wrenching from his mouth.
Lying in the bed like a wilted flower, she was pale and motionless. Machines beeping in regular rhythms, IVs in both arms, oxygen lines resting beneath her nose. He didn’t move for a moment and they were afraid that he didn’t even breathe. His heart thundered in his chest, but outside, he was still like stone.
Then the case slipped from his fingers and hit the floor with a soft thud.
“I left her with you,” he said without looking at Emma. His voice was soft but Emma knew it was directed to her. She stood up slowly and walked to him, “I know. I—I take full responsibility. I shouldn’t have—”
“I didn’t ask for your excuses,” he said flatly. “I asked you to protect her.”
“She wasn’t alone for long. I was nearby, I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t know?” Alric finally turned. His eyes were cold, burning with restrained fury. “Then tell me what she is doing here? What just happened to her, damn it!”
Max stepped between them. “Alric!”
“No.” Alric raised a hand. “Let her speak. Let her tell me how she lost my world.”
Emma’s lips trembled. “I did not know that she would willingly follow them. Someone lied to her. Most of the time she… I do not have an excuse, it is my fault.”
“A mistake?” Alric’s voice dropped lower. Deadly quiet. “You were the only person I trusted with her. And you left her and who the hell she followed? She would not make such a rookie mistake? Tell me what exactly happened here!?”
Tears rolled down Emma’s cheeks. She didn’t defend herself. She didn’t even wipe them away.
Natalie spoke up gently. “Alric, this isn’t the time—”
“Then when is the time, Natalie?” he snapped. “When?”
That silenced the hall, and finally Max spoke, “your housekeeper told us that your driver had gone to pick her up. She was told that you have called for you and she thought you had planned a surprise. She had called you but the call did not go through. Alric, no one had expected this would happen. We tried our best and…”Max went silent at once when their gaze met and he saw fury there.
The weight of his rage and grief was unbearable. Then Alric turned and walked toward the glass. He placed one hand against it, as if trying to reach through. His voice softened to a whisper, meant only for her.
“I brought it, you know. The best diamond in the world to propose to you.” His lips twitched in a trembling smile. “They said it would be the best gift for you. I wanted to give it as a surprise.”
He pulled the crushed velvet box from the floor and opened it. The diamond glowed faintly in the light blue fire, iridescent and breathtaking.
He held it up to the glass so she could see it, even if her eyes were closed.
“I brought you the stars. So come back and look at them.”
