Return Of The Heiress For Revenge - Chapter 520
Chapter 520: Not Well
The car rolled to a slow stop near a narrow stretch of road that twisted through tall trees and shadows. There were no shops, no homes around, Nora watched the wilderness and the dimming hues of twilight. The sky was turning darker now, streaked with indigo, soon there would be no traffic left on the roads.
“Stop the car for a while, I am not feeling well.” she held her stomach and her face contorted as if she was suffering too much pain. The driver hesitated as he looked around.
“This place did not look safe, madam. How about you rest and I will stop the car when we reach our destination?” Nora shook her head. Her face looked pale as she clutched her stomach.
“It would only take a minute, I want to vomit.” The man hesitated but he did not have a choice when she started to retch hard.
He stopped the car and parked it in the corner. Nora stepped out of the car, her heels crunching faintly on the gravel.
“Madam, are you all right?” the driver asked, stepping closer than before, almost as if trying to shield her from something unseen.
She rubbed her chest slowly, her brows furrowed. “Call Alric,” she said, her voice steady but laced with a strange unease. “Tell him I am feeling strange.”
The man hesitated. For a second, his eyes flickered with something unreadable. But then he nodded and pulled out his phone. She watched as he dialed, intentionally letting her see the screen.
It rang many times but no one answered the call.
Her eyes dimmed as her doubts became truth slowly. Somehow, she had already known he wouldn’t pick up. Her fingers twitched at her side.
“Try Doctor Maxv. I want to talk to him.” Her voice was still calm, but there was a thread of urgency now.
The driver visibly stiffened. “Doctor Max?” he repeated, surprised, before quickly recovering. “I don’t have his number, madam.”
“That’s all right,” she said coolly, her instincts sharpening despite the lingering haze. “I have it saved. Get my phone from the car.”
The man nodded and moved quickly to the backseat. Nora followed a few steps behind, her eyes trained on him.
He found the phone where she had left it earlier, picked it up and then, too quickly but too carelessly his fingers slipped, and the device hit the gravel with a sharp crack.
The screen shattered instantly.
“I!” he stammered, picking it up and turning to her. “I’m so sorry, madam, it just slipped from my hand. I didn’t mean to do it.”
“It’s okay,” Nora said in a quiet voice but her eyes flickered.
But with the sudden, quiet clarity of someone who had just realized something was very, very wrong.
She reached for the broken phone and held it gently in her hand. The screen was beyond repair. She couldn’t even see the numbers now.
“Accidents happen,” she murmured, then turned and looked out into the woods. Her breathing was calm and measured but her mind was spinning. She wasn’t sure if it was the water or the dress or just everything. the way her chest felt tighter than it should, the way her skin felt too warm despite the evening breeze.
And most of all, the way everything was perfectly timed. A driver she vaguely recognized and his absence no matter how many times she had called, rang but wasn’t answered. A drink that left her light-headed. A place so far from the city, no landmarks, no one in sight.
Alric wouldn’t do this. Would he?
She turned slowly to the driver, who was still holding out the broken phone with both hands, his expression apologetic but his eyes were too alert.
And that’s when she smiled. “I think I’ll just sit for a minute,” she said, brushing past him and sliding back into the car.
The man waited a moment before closing the door after her. Nora leaned her head back against the seat, staring at the ceiling of the car, her fingers curled tightly around the shattered phone.
“We will be there soon, madam. You do not need to worry.” he repeated, ready to close the door but she stopped him.
“There is a blanket there, can you take it out for me?” she pointed at the passenger seat. The driver nodded as he took out a blanket and handed it to her but she did not take it.
“How about you place it on me?” Her faint smile made her look vulnerable. The man was not sure but he did not have a choice.
He nodded and leaned to place the blanket on her when he felt something piercing his skin. He frowned and looked at his wrist. There was a small pin there. That was attached to her bag. He did not think much of it at first but then his vision started to blur and he collapsed on her.
Nora took in a deep ragged breath. Her own vision was blurring. She was sure he was not the only one in the plan. If she lost her consciousness here, she would never be able to open her eyes again.
It took all of her to push the man away and force herself to open her eyes.
Nora’s breath came in sharp, shallow gasps as she pushed the unconscious man off her lap. Her arms trembled, her chest heaved, and black spots danced at the edges of her vision. She clutched the broken phone in one hand, the cool glass biting into her palm as she dragged herself toward the driver’s side.
Stay awake, stay awake… she kept whispering in her mind, even as the nausea curled tighter in her stomach.
Her fingers fumbled with the keys still in the ignition. The engine had died. She turned it once but there was no sound. She tried again but it was a slow churn, but not enough. Her head drooped forward against the steering wheel.
“No,” she groaned, forcing herself to straighten up.
