Chapter 511: Handle With Money!
Nora glanced at her phone when it rang, Nat’s name flashing across the screen. She answered immediately, her tone still light with amusement from their last exchange.
“I will take the properties,” Nat said without any emotion in her voice. It was clear but colder now. “Now that I don’t need to hide, can I leave this house?”
Nora blinked, momentarily caught off guard by the sudden shift in tone. But she quickly recovered, a slow, knowing smile curving her lips.
“Of course,” she said smoothly. “I will have someone send a car for you. But where would you go?”
“Anywhere! But I do not want to live in this country anymore. I will shift to a hotel first and then decide everything in a week.” Though her voice sounded exhausted, it was clear she had made up her mind. Even if Nora would not help her, she would find a way to run away.
“Alright, there are many hotels owned by Alric. Not only were they luxurious but they were safe. You can live there as long as you want. Give me an hour, I will text you after arranging everything.” with the calibre of Nora, it should not take an hour to arrange a room in the hotel. But Not remembered that Nora had returned to the company to handle the chaos. It was already too much for her, so she did not want to press for long.
“Of course, take your time. I need time for packing my things too.” she nodded with a smile and after exchanging a few more words, she hung up the call.
But what nato did not know, as they were talking, Nora’s fingers had tapped the record button on her device. She ended the call and played back the message. Nat’s voice, steady, resolved, and heartbreakingly distant rang through the speaker.
Without a second thought, Nora forwarded the recording to Max.
Max was sitting across from his lawyer while rubbing his forehead. A lot of deeds of land and property, shares of Spencer group of companies and a few bank lockers that his parents had left behind. He was finalizing the paperwork that would shift half of things from his name to Lisa’s name. That would be enough to support her for a long time.
He knew this method was cold and cruel. But he did not know how to convince her. He did not want her to accuse nat or confront her. Knowing Nat, she would leave him without thinking twice.
His phone buzzed once, then again. When he noticed it was from Nora, he felt guilty again. He needed to go and check her wounds too.
“Give me a minute,” he said distractedly to the lawyer, reaching for it. The voice message played automatically.
“I’ll take the properties. Now that I don’t need to hide… can I leave this house?” The conversation continued and his face went paler. The world seemed to tilt. Max froze on his spot then it felt like he was struck by lightning.
His chair scraped against the floor as he stood up suddenly. his heart pounding so fast, he felt it would explode. She was leaving him. She wanted to run away even when he told her he would choose her!
“Max?” the lawyer asked, confused.
“I have to go,” Max said sharply, already grabbing his coat. “Handle the rest and fix another meeting tomorrow.” He didn’t wait for a reply. The door slammed behind him as he sprinted down the hall.
At the house, Nat folded a dress carefully into the suitcase, her hands working mechanically. As if she focused hard enough, she wouldn’t feel the ache behind her ribs.
The closets were nearly empty. She didn’t have much here anyway. Just a few clothes, a few memories, and too many broken promises.
She zipped the first suitcase shut and moved to the second. That’s when the door burst open. She flinched, startled by the sudden noise.
Max stood in the doorway, breathless. It looked like he had run away from demons. His eyes were wild. His gaze landed on the suitcases, then her. She flinched but then looked away. This was not the time to feel weak.
“Nat—”
She didn’t stop packing. Her hands reached for a folded scarf as if he weren’t even there.
“Please,” he said, stepping closer, his voice cracking, “don’t go.”
She went still for a second when she realized he already knew! But she didn’t look up. “You didn’t come back last night.”
“I—”
“I called the hospital,” she cut in, her voice calm that it was cutting his ribs. “They said you left for two days. I thought you were with Nora but she visited today and informed me you have completely forgotten about her injuries. So I assumed… you are busy with her.”
Max felt the punch in his gut. “I wasn’t with Lisa.”
She didn’t respond. Just neatly packed another item. “It did not matter where you were, Max. I do not have the right to interfere in your life. Now that Chris has gone, I am not under any threat anymore. Thank you for all your help. But I do not need you anymore.”
“I was handling the property transfer,” he said, voice rising. “Everything I have under my name. I was transferring it to Lisa and you.”
Nat finally looked up. Her eyes were dry but fierce. “Do I look like I need properties from you? And I do not care what you give to Lisa or not? But I never thought you would settle the matter with money!” His mouth opened, then shut.
“I thought you were different. I wanted to believe you were different. But the moment things get hard, you disappear. And now that you have returned, you want to tell me you will handle everything with money. I’m left here… packing up a life that never really existed.”
“Don’t say that,” he whispered, stepping forward. But she stepped back.
“I can’t trust you, Max. And I won’t raise my child on empty promises.”
