Chapter 509: A Twisted Fate!
“Our marriage?” The look of shock in her eyes made Alric frown. His face darkened immediately.
“Why? Is miss stone planning to discard me after using me to the fullest!” he teased but she could see the nervousness in his eyes. It only made him look more adorable.
“Hmm, perhaps!” she hid her laugh when his eyes narrowed. “But if you can convince me otherwise, I am ready to change my decision.” The man looked at her with desire as she wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled her closer.
But before she could kiss him, she heard footsteps.
“Boss! The man had committed suicide!” Nora frowned. Chris loved himself too much. He would never let go of hope of living this easily.
“How!” Alric glared at his incompetent staff and they looked away instantly.
“He… we opened his chains so that we could wash him in salt water. He lunged and banged his head on the wall and used the blades on the walls to kill himself.” they did not add that they did not stop him when he was banging his head on the walls or they would have stopped him from dying.
They just wanted to see him torturing himself. Who would have thought that he would have the courage to kill himself. Now they were embarrassed.
“I want to see it!” They were stunned by Nora and instinctively refused. The man had slit his throat. His body was covered with so many wounds it looked gruesome. But they did not dare to refuse when their boss said nothing.
Nora walked back into the dim room. The air was heavy with the metallic stench of blood. Chris lay sprawled on the cold stone floor, his throat slit wide open, eyes half-lidded in a lifeless stare. His skin had turned pale, tinged with blue. Blood had pooled beneath his neck, partially dried, partially soaked into the floor beneath him.
She moved closer to the stiff body with her lips parted. every scream, every bruise, every moment of helplessness. The gaslight in his eyes when he smiled and told her it was her fault. The threats. The promises of pain. The memories hit her like a wave crashing through her ribs.
Her legs gave out slightly, and she dropped to her knees beside him.
“He got such an easy death,” she whispered, voice shaking.
Tears slipped down her cheeks as she stared at the man who had once been the monster in all her nightmares. “After everything… he still got to choose his own ending,” she said bitterly.
Alric didn’t say a word. He stepped forward and dropped to his knees beside her, wrapping his arms around her protectively. She didn’t resist. She leaned into him, burying her face in his shoulder as her body trembled with quiet sobs.
“I wanted to face him again,” she choked out. “When he couldn’t speak lies anymore. I wanted to see the regret in his eyes.”
“You did,” Alric said softly, stroking her back gently. “Even if it was just for a moment. He saw you rise.”
Nora didn’t respond right away. Her sobs turned quieter, but her eyes stayed fixed on the corpse.
Alric gently helped her to her feet. “Let’s go,” he murmured. “You’ve seen enough.”
She didn’t resist when he led her out of the room, his coat still draped around her shoulders. As the door shut behind them, she let out a shaky breath, wiping her eyes.
“There’s one more thing,” Alric said, his voice low. “All of Chris’s assets—his companies, his properties, even his offshore accounts—they’ve all been frozen and rerouted. Everything now legally belongs to us.”
Nora looked up at him, blinking slowly.
“I don’t want a single coin of his,” she said. “Give it to Nat. All of it. She’ll need it for her son. It’s the least she deserves.”
Alric nodded. “As you wish.” he rubbed her arms gently as he guided her out of that dark room. Nora knew the properties would be a lot. Yet just one word from her and he was ready to let go of it all. She could not help but wonder why such a man was with her!
“Thank you,” she whispered.
He reached for her hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “You don’t need to thank me. Just… let me be here for you.”
She looked at him, eyes swollen but steady. “You already are. You have always been, only you.” she leaned in and closed her eyes.
Nora leaned against the window, watching the fields blur past. Her eyes were swollen from crying, but there was a strange sense of stillness inside her, a strange hollowness.
Alric glanced at her, his fingers tapping lightly on the steering wheel. “You want to go home?” he asked softly.
She turned to him. “Not yet.”
He nodded, changing direction without asking further.
They ended up at the hill overlooking the valley, a secluded place Alric often came to alone. He stepped out and walked around to open her door, offering his hand.
They walked in silence until they reached the edge. The view was breathtaking, but Nora didn’t look at it. She was looking at him. “I thought I’d feel better after seeing him dead.”
“You don’t?” he asked.
“I feel… tired,” she admitted. “Like I’ve been running for so long, I forgot what it’s like to stop.”
Alric didn’t speak. He sat down on the grass, gently tugging her down with him. She leaned against his chest, his arms encircling her like a quiet shield.
“Do you ever wonder what we’d be if all this… pain hadn’t happened?” she asked after a while.
Alric looked down at her, brushing a lock of hair from her cheek. “I think about it sometimes. But then I remember… This is what brought you to me. As twisted as that sounds.”
She closed her eyes. “Maybe we’re both broken.”
“Maybe,” he said, “but if two broken pieces fit together… Does it matter?”
A small smile touched her lips, sad but sincere. “Only if you promise not to let go.”
“I couldn’t,” he said, pressing a kiss to her hair, “even if I tried.”
