Chapter 1400: Becky Is the Bait Again!
“The situation has changed. Anjie, you are the only one with the authority and the speed to handle this. You must head through the gates immediately. Scour your kingdom’s lands. Bring every master, every soldier, and every drop of medicine you can find. We need an avalanche of reinforcements.”
Anjie didn’t refute the command. She knew Fang was right—her kingdom remained the most stable territory in their alliance, a reservoir of untapped strength.
Yet, her feet remained rooted to the blood-stained stones. “And what about the fight here? If I leave, who coordinates the defence? Who holds this line while William is out there in the dark?”
She looked at Fang, her meaning clear. If the plan was simply for a half-dead old man to lead a desperate stand, she would rather stay and send a messenger. A kingdom’s worth of help wouldn’t matter if the heart of the city was carved out before they arrived.
“She can help,” Fang said, gesturing with a trembling hand toward Becky.
“We don’t even know her!” Anjie objected, her voice rising. “She’s an outsider. She might be a powerful fighter, but leading thousands of masters in a coordinated city-wide defence? That takes more than just a strong arm!”
“Excuse me, but that ‘she’ is standing right in front of you,” Becky interrupted, her eyes flashing with a sudden, competitive fire. She stepped into Anjie’s personal space, her chin tilted up defiantly.
“I can lead these masters through a slaughter better than anyone else on this side of the gate. Don’t mistake my silence for incompetence.”
Anjie felt the sting of the insult, but more than that, she felt a jolt of surprise at the sheer confidence radiating from the woman. Before a secondary skirmish could erupt between the two, Fang slammed his sword-cane against the ground.
“She has fought by William’s side through the worst of it,” Fang reminded them, his eyes darting toward the distant, flickering shadow of the Guild Master.
“You know William. He doesn’t keep dead weight around him. He doesn’t let the weak or the incapable stand at his back. If he trusts her to hold his flank, that is all the testimony I need. Besides, her power originates from the Higher Realm—even capped, she is likely the most potent force we have left in this plaza.”
Anjie went quiet. She couldn’t argue with the logic of William’s judgment, but her gaze lingered on Becky, narrowing into a sharp, warning stare.
Out of all the reasons Fang had listed, her mind had fixated on one specific phrase: fighting by William’s side for a long time.
To Anjie, this woman wasn’t just a tactical asset; she was a variable she hadn’t accounted for, and that silent look was a clear marker of territory.
“Fine,” Anjie said, turning away abruptly to mask her agitation. “I’ll send runners to every portal hub in the city. Give the enemies hell and don’t look back! Hold this ground until the gates turn blue with reinforcements!”
Anjie moved with the speed of a gale, vanishing toward the flickering blue light of the portal arches.
Fang, meanwhile, didn’t waste a second. Using his spirit telepathy, he broadcast a command that resonated in the minds of every loyal master in the district: Follow Becky’s orders as if they were my own. She is the voice of the Fox Guild today!
Becky didn’t hesitate. She stepped onto a fallen pillar, her silhouette framed by the smoke of the burning city.
She didn’t need a telepathic link; she used an ancient vocal technique that amplified her voice into a resonating boom that shook the windows of the surrounding buildings.
“Listen up!” she roared, her voice cutting through the sounds of clashing steel.
“We are going to hit these bastards on my mark. Not a second before! Prepare yourselves. Reserve your essence. Focus entirely on a tight, defensive shell for now. Let them wear themselves out against our shields. And when I give the signal? You unleash every ounce of hell you’ve been holding back!”
Her voice was so loud it didn’t just reach her allies; it drifted over the enemy lines like a death knell.
“Do you think it’s wise to announce our plan so clearly?” Fang asked, leaning heavily on his sword, his brow furrowed. He wondered for a brief moment if he had overestimated the girl’s tactical subtlety.
“I know exactly what I’m doing, old man,” Becky replied, not even glancing back at him. She was watching the way the enemy front line wavered at her shout.
“Get ready with that lightning array of yours. We’re going to hit them before they can even process the threat. This isn’t a siege anymore—it’s a counter-ambush.”
“Right away? Didn’t you just say to wait for—oh.” Fang’s eyes widened as the realisation hit him like a physical blow.
A faint, admiring rasp of a laugh escaped his throat. “That was a trick. If I believed you were waiting, then those bastards across the line certainly did too.”
Becky didn’t look back; her eyes were fixed on the distant, flickering silhouette of William. She knew the original plan was for William to flush out the Reaper first, to find the head of the serpent before the body was provoked. But she had been watching him for the last quarter hour.
Every time William cleared a path, the enemy simply threw a fresh wave of expendable grunts into the meat grinder.
The Reaper was patient, a cold-blooded assassin content to let thousands of lives burn just to keep his own position hidden. He wouldn’t show himself for a direct challenge.
So, Becky decided to change the script. She would steal the limelight. By launching an aggressive, premature assault, she would draw the heat and the spiritual focus of the entire enemy command toward the plaza.
She would become the lightning rod, forcing the Reaper to decide whether to let his front lines collapse or intervene personally to stop her.
She was choosing to be the bait this time. It was a role she had learned from the best, inspired by the way William had used her own presence to lure out her Ex in the valley.
