Chapter 1341: A Rallying Call
From the look on their faces he could tell they already heard the news. He didn’t know how they learnt, be it from spies they planted next to Anjie, or thanks to news spreading from the kingdom. He didn’t care about how they learnt about that and simply gave them a meaningful look.
They were all worried, deeply concerned about Anjie. Seeing how they had such dark faces, burdened by sadness and worry, made him feel warmth from this.
It was as if a family member suffered from a grave incident, and other family members just came to support. William couldn’t tell if they came here to support Anjie or to inform him about what happened and ask for his help. But in either case, he felt touched by the feelings they showed.
“Can… Can you help us?” After a long time of crying, followed by a longer time of silent shaking in his arms, Anjie finally raised her head and looked at him with swallowed eyes.
“I will try my best,” William sighed, “but…”
“I know, the situation doesn’t look that good,” Anjie slowly broke free from his embrace, to finally realise the presence of others. Seeing everyone standing by her side like this, showing such genuine worry over her made her retrace and break again into another session of crying.
This time the girls hugged her, while patting on her back and shoulders, trying their best to support and console her with kind words. Things like: Don’t worry, William will find a way to solve this, and such stuff was said to her. And yet none of that ever helped in making her feel better.
If any, she couldn’t help but blame herself for trusting her mentor and the old masters in her kingdom to do the right thing. She blamed herself that she left and went to secure a spot, falling into a trap laid by her kingdom’s top masters and trusted leaders.
She couldn’t help but think what would have happened if she stuck to her father’s side and didn’t leave. She saw herself responsible for what happened, shouldering all the blame, and that was what killed her from the inside.
William could easily tell what was going through her head without the need to ask. And at some point, he couldn’t hold himself back anymore.
“Don’t carry a weight that doesn’t belong to you,” he slowly said, while giving everyone around meaningful looks.
“You entrusted me with this task, and I miserably failed you, failed everyone…” she raised her head, said in a weak and choked voice.
“First I didn’t entrust you with this,” William slowly said, “I let Sloth and the king handle the bombs. You were just there to help lay down the formations.”
“But…”
“Listen,” William grabbed her gently from the arms, letting her face him directly, “I didn’t give you, or any of you, the responsibility to handle the bombs… Of course, with exception of Lara and Lina, everyone else was just tagging along and providing support regarding laying down formations.”
“But if I were there…”
“You wouldn’t have changed anything,” William finally hit it where it hurt the most, “you aren’t the queen of your people, you are just the princess. Your father is the one to blame, and even if you were there, you wouldn’t have stopped it.”
“I would have at least alerted you…”
“And then what? Do you expect even if I was there, they would have listened? Never underestimate the power of greed and people’s pride! Even if I was there, I wouldn’t have changed any of that! Once they surrendered to their greed and ambitions, nothing would have saved them, no one would have changed this outcome.”
“…”
His words were heavy and painful, yet for a reason she started to feel a little better when she heard them. Her eyes stopped flooding with tears, and her face started to look a little better.
“I’m saying this is their fault, not yours,” William gently said, “yet it’s up to you to correct things, and I’m here to help you in that.”
“Me too!”
“I won’t stand idle, I’ll also help!”
“Sign me up as well!”
More of the girls and their friends started to speak up, showing their support and willing to help. William just smiled, while letting Anjie feel the warmth others were showing her.
“Disasters happen, what happens regardless of what we try to do,” William said in a strong tone, “but it’s up to us how to handle this, and we won’t just turn our backs to one of our family members in need. Cheer up, luckily this time it’s not the end of the world they caused, but just some problems that we can solve.”
“For real?!” Hope appeared in her eyes, while William slowly nodded. He knew how hard it would take to control such a disaster. After all, the type of spirit power spreading at these three kingdoms was the type to turn any monster into a mutated one, while killing any master entrapped within.
He couldn’t tell how many masters lost their lives, how many normal people died. But he was sure the toll was so massive that he didn’t dare to even mention it in front of Anjie, fearing this would worsen her again.
“Take her to rest,” William instructed Berry and Ro to take Anjie away. It went without saying that he would start a meeting right away, and it seemed he didn’t want Anjie to hear what he intended to say in that meeting.
The two girls escorted their broken friend away, taking her back to Lara’s city while speaking with William using spirit telepathy. They knew he would catch up later with them at the city and asked them to take this time to call upon all their faction masters, and start a rallying cry for the Fox Guild from every corner of the world.
The guild already had branched into different kingdoms. The number of masters belonging to the guild was way beyond what anyone could imagine. And William asked for all of them to come over and gather up.
