Chapter 231: My little sister tells me a secert.
Dorian sat down at the edge of the bed, holding Maria’s hand as she had fallen fast asleep on the surface, right beside Seraphina.

It had been a couple of minutes since she had fallen asleep.

Throughout the entire time, Dorian had been scanning her body using his analysis skill, trying to see if there would be anything wrong with her child.

He did scans on her multiple times just to be sure he didn’t make any mistakes.

To his relief, both his unborn child and Maria were healthy and had no noticeable health-related issues that could pose a threat in the future.

But even with knowing that, Dorian’s mind was still a bit restless.

‘Why would Yashohi come here rather than to see me herself?’

Dorian wondered the entire time as he sat there, staring intensely at his wife’s sleeping body.

For the most part, he had already assumed that since Yashohi knew him, she would come see him herself.

That alone had allowed him to carry on with his daily duties and not worry about it.

But seeing that a witch launched an attack out of the blue, and now Yashohi had visited his house unannounced, it was no longer something he could overlook.

Once, he thought he could focus on building his empire.

Work until he had made a name for himself and was capable of retiring early.

Seemed like the universe was trying to push him to the limit.

With slow movement, Dorian stood up from the side of his bed and rose to his feet.

He then proceeded to walk out of the room and gently closed the door behind him.

The following moment, Dorian had made his way toward his sister’s bedroom.

She had been cooped up there ever since he asked her to leave the academy for a while due to the witch’s attack.

Bang bang!

Dorian gently knocked on the door.

“Yelena, are you awake?”

“Brother!”

Dorian could hear the sound of rustling echoing from inside before the door opened.

Yelena stuck her face out, a huge smile lighting up her features.

“You finally came to see me.” she said.

Her excitement died down for a second.

Her eyes scanned the hallway to make sure Dorian was truly by himself.

When she confirmed that he was, she grabbed him by the arm and pulled him into her room, giggling.

Now that her brother was inside, she made sure he was seated on the bed.

Then she, wanting to be pampered after being away from him for so long, decided to lay on her back on the bed with her head resting calmly on her brother’s lap.

Her dark hair was scattered over Dorian’s lap and on the bed.

All while Yelena was looking up at him with a huge smile on her face.

For a moment there, Dorian was truly happy to see she had somewhat changed from what she used to be when she had never attended the academy.

But right now, he could not get distracted by that.

He needed to learn the truth.

“What do you know about the witches?” Dorian asked without hesitation.

He watched as the excitement that had been etched on Yelena’s face vanished in the blink of an eye.

Dark-eyed and glaring, she tried to get up from his lap.

To her surprise, Dorian held her back down, glaring at her.

“You haven’t answered my question.”

Yelena was surprised.

It would seem her brother was being serious.

Averting her eyes, she replied—

“Do I have to?”

“Yes. A witch broke into my home, touched my wife, and threatened my unborn child. I absolutely have to know.”

He then added—

“If you tell me what you know about the witches, then I’ll tell you a little secret of mine as well.”

Yelena looked at him.

“…”

“…”

Then she began, her eyes fixed on Dorian the entire time.

“Yes, I have seen the witch of Evernight, once before.”

Dorian was surprised, but at the same time, he had his suspicions.

To think it would turn out to be true.

“When was that?” he asked, his expression serious the entire time.

Yelena had slowly softened up, almost like she knew he would be disappointed with whatever left her mouth later.

“When we were kids…”

Dorian paused.

“You said you didn’t remember anything from your childhood, right, brother?” Yelena gripped his shirt, her face buried in his clothes. “I might have been the reason for that.”

He kept his cool.

A great strategy if he wanted to get more out of her.

“What happened?” he asked, making sure he kept his words short without needing to sound angered or upset.

“I killed you.”

So she says.

She went on with the explanation.

“When we were kids, I admired you as my big brother, my only brother. No one in the world was going to take your place, same as you thought of me. But then, you started disappearing on me, always meeting up with a girl from the village.”

Dorian listened attentively, despite having no memory of the situation.

“I got jealous. And in a fit of rage, burnt everything to the ground. I promise I didn’t mean to kill you or anything. I don’t understand why I got mad. Please, you have to believe me.”

Her voice trembled as she continued.

“It was only after I came to my senses that I realized what I had done. And then I saw you, lying on the ground, with blood soaked into your shirt while Maria was sobbing right next to you. It hurts. It really hurts.”

Every word she uttered forced her to snuggle closer to Dorian.

“I couldn’t bear the thought. I had killed my own brother with my own hands. If you died, if I lost you, then…”

Her voice cracked.

It was only then Dorian could tell she was crying, her sniffles pressed softly against his stomach.

“I wanted to end it myself. If you died, then I was going to kill myself too. But she stopped me, the witch. I remember vividly how it happened. She offered a chance to bring you back to life. She called herself the Evernight Witch and promised she had the power to do so, only if I agreed to her terms as well.”

“What did she ask for?” Dorian asked.

Which was then followed by a short silence.

“My soul.” Yelena hinted. “She asked for a part of my soul in exchange for saving your life. I didn’t want to refuse either. If there was a chance for me to save your life, then I was more than willing to take it all, even at the expense of my own soul.”

“So you gave her your soul and she brought me back to life?”

“Something like that. I don’t necessarily know, since after I told her yes, I fell unconscious. When I woke up, you were home, alive and healthy. Only you had no memory of me.”

Dorian, too fell silent.

Raphael had not warned him about anything, so there was little chance that his sister was lying.

That said, most of it sounded almost hard to take in.

True, there had been rumors about he and Maria knowing themselves since childhood.

If he had died in her hands once, wouldn’t she have spread the news already?

Better still, be shocked to see him not dead?

Which then led to the next question he had in his mind.

If the real Dorian died in the forest at such a young age, with memory loss, could that be what led to his waywardness and also the suicide he took in order for Jacob to take over?

Was it really that?

To make matters worse, Dorian stopped to consider—how much of this was actually Yashohi’s plan?

Dorian sat perfectly still, processing the shocking confession from Yelena.

The tale of his childhood death.

Yelena’s uncontrolled power.

The pact with the Evernight Witch.

All of it felt like a cruel twist of fate, an explanation for the blank pages of his youth.

He looked down at his sister, whose tears were still wetting his shirt.

She believed she had killed him.

She believed she had traded her soul to save him.

“And you have no memory of the witch telling you to take a part of my soul, or erasing my memories?” Dorian asked, his voice low but firm.

Yelena shook her head against his stomach.

“None. I just woke up, and you were there, but you didn’t know who I was. I felt… empty and different. And when I woke up, I had these strange memories.”

She finally pushed herself up, sitting on the bed opposite him, wiping her eyes.

Her expression was now confused, though still somewhat sad.

“Memories?” Dorian leaned closer.

“Yes, I don’t know where or have them, but for some reason I know a man named Jacob; he was supposed to be close to me, close enough that i was willing to do anything for him. I do not know this man.”
