Chapter 198: All for a cause.
“What are you doing here? I told you to leave me alone!”

The anger in Yahoshi’s eyes was quite obvious, if anything. The woman, Luno, standing right in front of her, sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose as she glanced to the side.

“Are you being serious right now, My Lady?” She glanced at Yahoshi, as though about to nag at her. “If I wasn’t there, you would have died from the injury you received. Why on earth did you choose to show yourself there, when the bearer of the Faja weapon is there?”

She continued, “Please don’t tell me you have forgotten that weapon is the only thing in the world that can kill you, and just you? I beg you to be more careful.”

Yahoshi, obviously still exhausted, managed to push herself back a bit until she was seated on the tombstone.

“Where is he?” she asked.

“If you speak of the Demon King, then he is still in Lumberg, with the rest of the humans, acting as their leader,” Luno replied with a bit of disgust in her voice.

“He is still there…”

Yahoshi gripped the side of the tombstone so hard that it cracked and shattered.

“He needs me. I need to bring him here.”

Every word she uttered was backed with an underlying layer of obsession.

At first, it seemed as though Luno wanted to say something, but another female voice echoed from the back.

“Lady Evernight, permit me to speak.”

Both Luno and Yahoshi turned their gaze to the entrance of the cave where they could see a rather short girl walking in.

She wore a long brown cloak that covered her head and held a staff in her hand that was obviously taller than her. Arriving close enough, she fell to her knees and spoke again.

“My Lady, it’s been three hundred years since your return. It’s truly an honor to see you once again. I have kept your throne clean and waiting for you to rule us witches once again.”

Yahoshi didn’t seem interested in the conversation; her eyes were still lowered to the ground, in deep thought. Seeing that no response was coming her way, the short witch raised her head a bit and spoke.

“Right now, the cave is feeding you enough mana for you to keep yourself up. If you were to move away from the cave, then there is a huge chance that your body would give out and you would fall unconscious.”

Yahoshi knew it had to be the case; she could tell. It wasn’t like the former world where magic was nonexistent and limited; this world was flowing with mana, enough to damn her.

She began biting her finger angrily. If only she hadn’t split her essence, then she wouldn’t need to worry about something as minor as this.

Suddenly, the short witch uttered, “If you’d like, I can send a member of my force to keep an eye on the Demon Lord and transfer the image to you. Would that suffice long enough for when you have finally healed?”

Yahoshi’s eyes snapped open with joy.

She charged up from where she was seated and crawled towards the short witch only to give her a big hug with a smile on her face.

“Thank you, Bonnie! Oh, thank you! You can do that, can you not? I’ll finally be able to see him, right?” Yahoshi pulled back with a big smile, just so she could take a look at Bonnie’s face.

Bonnie, flustered that Yahoshi would actually hug her, could only nod her head in agreement as words refused to flow out of her mouth.

As for Luno, she shook her head; while surprised, she was sure as hell not moved by the scene.

Once Yahoshi had confirmed Bonnie’s response, she clapped her hands with a smile on her face, then she returned to sit on the tombstone.

To which she then proceeded to wiggle her feet, her black mesmerizing hair flowing back and forth as though it was an extension of her being.

“Go do it,” she uttered with excitement. “I am waiting. Hurry up.”

“R-right, yes, My Lady, I’ll get to it.”

Bonnie stood from her knees and glanced at Luno for a brief second before she walked out of the cave. But that single second was enough for them to communicate with one another in silence.

They both knew Yahoshi’s mood changed at the slight mention of the Demon Lord.

She was still the same; the witch they knew was back. Her obsession was quite on display for them to see.

And they were no different.

“Luno…” Evernight called out, her mood changing into one of seriousness as her gaze glowed a faint red light.

Luno turned to the Evernight Witch. “Yes, My Lady?”

“Tell me—how have the humans been since my departure? I want to know everything. Down to the last detail.”

….

(Lumberg Kingdom, Main Capital)

Revina stood in front of her dragon, Exlor. In her hand, Faja was present, trails of sweat dripping down the side of her cheeks.

For the past four hours, she had been training with the dragon, and not once had she seen a way to break through his defenses.

“Dammit.”

Revina dropped to her knees, using her blade as support.

Exlor stared at her for a while.

“Master, I could not help but notice you’ve been pushing yourself a little harder than usual.” He continued, “While I do know you are preparing for when the witch attacks again, I surely don’t think that is enough reason for you to keep collapsing with every training.”

Revina was silent for a while. Not because she found his words dismissive, but because even she herself could not make out a concrete reason why she was pushing herself so hard.

Or rather, not a reason she wanted to acknowledge.

“I am too weak. I can’t be comfortable, not now when the Dragon Monarch might be in danger any minute of the day.” Using the last of her strength, she stood to her feet.

“My father gave me this blade after I made a vow to fight alongside the Dragon Monarch and protect him. I refuse to let my weakness stand in the way of that.”

Exlor sighed, the cave vibrating a bit in response.

“Little One, there is obviously something bothering you. I am connected to you because I am your summon. What are you so afraid of?”

As Exlor asked that question, the first image that appeared in her mind was Dorian, reaching out to hug her.

The very next second, she scooted backward, fear etched on her face as she panted with her blade in front of her.

But that wasn’t all. Her cheeks were beet red, almost as though she was burning.

Exlor lowered his head to the ground, a small smile showing on the dragon’s scaly face. “The King hopes for love, does she?”

Revina tried to furrow her face, but it failed, utterly failed.

Her grip loosened around the hilt of her blade, and her gaze softened, different from the stare of a King.

“Little One, did I ever tell you why we dragons viewed the Dragon Monarch as a traitor, or at least, some of us?”

Revina shook her head.

“The Dragon Monarch was a generous man, always willing to help those who came to him. He had no discrimination towards the races. The elves, the dark elves, the demons—he helped them all alike. But because of this, he had less time to spend with us, the dragons, fighting at the front lines.”

“…”

“Back then, none of us said a word. We wanted to be viewed as strong and responsible to the Monarch. We wanted to be viewed as the higher race, showing no weakness, so we never once voiced out our concern. So after our victory against the gods, when we came back to Earth, we found that the Monarch had run away with a human. A few of us were furious. He left us to go with a human. Many of us died because he never came back, and we lost.”

Exlor sighed, trying to hold back his tears.

“But our pain went far deeper than that. What if we had kept the Dragon Monarch to ourselves? What if he knew how much we needed him? Would he have still abandoned us? If only we told him how much we actually loved and cared for our Lord.”

Silence settled for a while.

“Little One. You cannot let time pass because you fear what will be. Embrace the Monarch, and be there for him. Let him know what you want. So, when the day comes, he doesn’t slip from your fingers, like he did with ours.”

Revina didn’t say anything. Instead, she fell to her knees and hugged her dragon by the face.

“This is the first time I have seen you speak with such sadness. You really cared for the Monarch, didn’t you?”

“Are you trying to tease me?”

“No. I admire that. Someone like me cannot hope to have that luxury. And it saddens me. So very much.”
