Chapter 701: Stupid Questionnaire
“You are oddly curious about my life,” Gaia replied, tilting her head slightly. “You do know that if you wish to know something about me, you can simply enter my mind and scour it for your own interest.”
Rael let out a sigh, rubbing his temples.
“Do I look like that kind of person?”
“Truthfully, after what I’ve seen so far, you do seem like that kind of person,” Gaia said.
For a moment, he was completely shocked she thought of him that way.
But right as he was about to retort, she let out a soft chuckle.
“I’m merely joking.”
“…Are you serious?”
A faint smile appeared on her face.
“Ask away. I’m up to answering anything, so long as you don’t ask any perverse questions. I’m not that keen on sharing stuff like that.”
Again…
Did she really think he was that kind of person?
Sure, his past wasn’t the brightest.
But it wasn’t that dark either.
He dealt in gambling and gun smuggling, but none of the actually really shady shit.
That was off limits.
After all, his morality did have a threshold.
Nonetheless, Rael stared at her for a few moments, and after thinking up some basic question, he asked it.
“I know you’re old, but did you have a normal life before all this Gaia stuff? Or like in the myths, half of you higher beings just kind of spawned into the world?”
Her brow twitched slightly.
“Are you calling me old?”
“…”
“I’ll have you know, if you took my age and only counted it whenever I was doing something productive, I’d only be a little under 1000 years old.”
Did that mean in her whole life of several eons, she had wasted it away for that long…?
Shucks.
“And no, I did have a normal life before everything. I also had loving parents, and even a world that I held dear to my heart.”
Her expression turned a little dark.
“It was invaded by puny aliens one day. They destroyed our world and tried to make it their own. Since my powers had slightly awakened at that point, I managed to kill all of them. Though, by the time it was over, every single person I cared about was dead.”
Rael detected several lies in her statement.
So many lies, he didn’t know how to filter out the truth.
She knew that too, clearly…
But if she didn’t feel that comfortable sharing her past life, then Rael wasn’t really sure what to do.
“I’m sorry if it’s a deep topic. How about… did you have a dog?”
Almost like the tension had been defused in an instant, Gaia nearly spat on the floor as she burst out laughing.
“Pfft… Hahaha…”
“What? Is it about the dog? Did you have a cat instead?”
“No. None of those,” Gaia replied, wiping the stray tear off her cheek. “I didn’t have any modern pets. I did have a little rat, however. I didn’t have a name for it, but it always kept me company.”
“It’s really a pity the lifespan of a rat is so short…”
Rael sighed, pausing for a few seconds.
He wasn’t really a genius.
But after putting together the clues and sorting through her earlier lies, he could tell she didn’t actually have a family.
Yet the rat pet she had as a child was definitely real, as he couldn’t detect even a single lie from her when she spoke about it.
So an orphan with a rat pet.
That was pretty sad.
“I wish I could ask you some questions too, but I sadly sorted through all your memories already,” Gaia said, crossing her arms, as if waiting for him to ask more questions.
So he thought up another silly question.
“When did you get your first paycheck?”
“My first paycheck? Let’s see…”
Gaia fell into thought, then met his gaze.
“Does stealing from someone count?”
“Nope. No stealing,” Rael replied, crossing his arms in an ‘X’ shape.
Seeing that, Gaia began pondering again until finally, she nodded.
“The first actual paycheck I received was when I was 17. I was a part of an expedition as a healer. After the successful expedition, I was paid 1,500 gold coins. That’s… equivalent to 1.5 million Trell, if I’m correct.”
That much Trell would set anyone up for life.
Though, if these were medieval times where people had to go on some kind of expeditions, then Rael was sure that many gold coins would be spent fairly quickly.
“What kind of expedition was it?”
“Demon subjugation and fortress recovery,” she replied instantly. “It was rather simple since we had powerful fighters on our side. We suffered very few casualties because of my healing capabilities too.”
“I see…”
There were so many more silly questions Rael felt like he wanted to ask, so he didn’t hold back.
What color the rat was, what type of weapons she used, what her favorite color was, and even the types of clothes she liked to wear when she wasn’t fighting.
She was a pretty simple girl, he found out.
Her favorite color was dark green just like her hair, and her choice of clothes was whatever the commoner girls of her time wore.
Which, oftentimes, were just the same old rags.
Even with a lot of money, she was modest.
Buying a house, living in it for tens of years, but sadly, because of the expeditions and how her world was in crisis, she never settled down.
So when her friends and people she knew died, she had no more time for romance.
And so, she continued living on, with her healing abilities making her close to immortal.
It was pretty eye opening, but obviously sad.
After all, that would mean up until today, she still hadn’t found anyone she liked.
As for Rael…
He thought she felt gratitude toward him over any kind of affection.
And he didn’t mind it.
She was plenty helpful already, and he was glad to receive her help.
Nonetheless, the two of them continued chatting for what felt like several days until finally, the egg cracked.
