Chapter 562: Turning Point [ 4 ]
A deathly silence descended, with not even a single car horn or argument to be heard. It was too eerie.
He felt a very small chunk of DTP being absorbed every second, likely to fuel this Time Domain. Even so, he intended to keep it up and running for the time being.
Rael floated down, landing in the middle of the street.
Then, without wasting a second, he took a single step forward, suddenly arriving in the United States, New York.
It was lively, and just as he had seen on the internet so many times.
It was a stark contrast to Seoul, which was now frozen in time, but…
“Gaia, what happens to them?”
[…]
[The awakening of Seoul is imminent but halted. Mana travels faster than you might expect, so there are a few lingering tidbits in the air, likely making their way to a few select people, and… well… giving them powers like the ones you saw in the Memory Record,] she replied slowly.
After a brief pause, she continued.
[The world’s core is unstable, so there will be unnatural weather, earthquakes, monster outbreaks, and other serious issues. However, they won’t die right away, but in due time. Likely in hundreds of years, humanity will eventually perish.]
“Hmm… So in the end, they’ll continue living their lives as per usual, with only Seoul being frozen. Though I don’t understand. I would definitely have had enough power in a couple of years to save this world, so why didn’t I come back?”
He recalled seeing that the outside of Seoul was totally wrecked, but then he also remembered a single event that made him reconsider.
In the memory record, he was made to go inside the subway station for a couple of days while the world expansion happened outside. What if during that time, Rael, or whoever that being was, came back and did something?
I don’t get what. Did he speed up the time of Seoul? Did he just resume time as usual while also expanding the world? I have so many questions…
And yet, he also had so few answers.
“So as long as I come back in a few years, cover this whole world in my Time Domain, and wait a little while, it’ll all be fine,” he said, more so convincing himself.
But of course, Gaia was also there.
[Seems like it. Seoul should be off the radar now, and no one should be able to enter it.]
“I hear something off in your voice,” Rael said, tilting his head. “You can share your thoughts. I know you have plenty.”
[…]
[I don’t mean to sound rude… but what if the reason you didn’t check up on this world was because you were killed?] Gaia commented, immediately regretting it. [Sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.]
“It’s fine. I told you that you can always be honest with me,” Rael replied with a chuckle. He lowered his head. “And yeah, I can see that happening. Fate and the other fancy cosmic stuff is definitely against me.”
[Eh… yeah.] Gaia giggled. [Though, I’d advise you to leave now. This world will progress by itself, and do remember that this is not your body. This is Altros’s body. You should return him to Seoul and freeze him.]
“Good idea.” Rael hummed, and in the next instant, vanished from New York, arriving back in the center of the quiet Seoul.
He was planning to just drop off Altros on some rooftop and get it over and done with, but that was when an unexpected voice rang out inside his mind.
[I understand it now…] Altros mumbled. [The more you spoke, the more memories I was able to see. You’re literally me, right? Just from the future. Honestly, I feel like an idiot now.]
“…”
[But hey…] Altros lowered his voice. [I know that whatever I say, you’re not going to listen. But at the very least, can you visit our sister? I’m sure that’s what you want too, isn’t it?]
Rael let out a sigh.
“You’re right. But while I will freeze you in time so nothing bad happens, I won’t erase your memories. In all honesty, you’ll only be frozen for a few years at most. I’ll likely have figured out some sort of fix for this apocalypse by then.”
After all, since his original world was gone, he might as well treat this one as what could have been.
For Melissa.
[Hehe… I honestly picked up on your lie detection stuff,] Altros said. [You lied about the Melissa part. But it’s not for me to question. So long as you don’t do something weird, you won’t hear a peep out of me.]
“…”
Once again, he was left speechless by this doofus. Still, he was glad that Altros managed to snap out of it, especially after the earlier news.
Still, Rael shook his head and then moved to the hospital, arriving in front of Melissa’s hospital room.
He raised his hand to knock out of instinct, but just as quickly, he lowered it, realizing that she wouldn’t answer anyway.
Pushing the door open, he stepped inside.
Amidst the scattered tables and dirty cloth on the window, he spotted Melissa lying peacefully in her hospital bed with a faint smile.
His heart ached, and when he sat down beside her, he was at a complete loss for words.
He had practiced what he would say to her, but now, his mind was drawing a blank.
Yet the more he thought about it, the more he realized that this wasn’t right.
She may be Melissa, but she wasn’t his Melissa.
She was the current Altros’s sister, and so…
Rael focused on the DTP welling up inside his chest, and then, he tapped on Melissa’s forehead, unfreezing time for her.
“…”
He closed his eyes and then focused his Eternal Marionette skill on Melissa.
There was only silence for a few moments until he finally felt a connection, albeit faint.
Without warning, he jumped from Altros’s body straight into Melissa’s Mind Realm. There wasn’t even a hint of resistance, as one would expect from someone in a coma.
But when he gained feeling in his limbs and opened his eyes, the only thing he saw was darkness. Unending darkness.
Upon closer look, he realized the darkness resembled something like a slime, which immediately gave him an idea.
Rael snapped his fingers, turning the slime-like darkness into fog.
<Mental Integrity: 3,429% → 2,484%>
Then, he summoned a large vacuum cleaner, which he turbo-charged to the extreme.
<Mental Integrity: 2,484% → 2,124%>
As the fog began to vanish into the vacuum cleaner, Rael caught sight of Melissa’s Mind Realm.
It was… just like his.
Empty, without a purpose.
Yet, the one thing that stood in that emptiness, was the shallow water he had grown accustomed to, and likely, so did Melissa.
He searched the Mind Realm attentively until, eventually, his eyes landed on a petite figure lying on a couch, several thousand kilometers away.
It was Melissa, and she seemed slightly startled by the disappearance of the darkness, yet also relieved.
Technically, this would be enough. He could leave and give her a small nudge. She would wake up.
However, as he stared at her figure, his heart couldn’t help but ache.
He knew it wasn’t his sister… Rather, not the same one.
Then why…
Why can’t I stop myself from approaching her?
