Chapter 545: Undershadowed Gratitude
Rael nearly choked on his saliva when he realized she wasn’t lying. But how was that possible?

Sure, he didn’t read her mind, but that was because he had no intention of reading the minds of the people he was close to or even cared about.

But more importantly, his Primordial Sight never picked up on any lie.

And before his thoughts could spiral out of control, Lilith took the first sip, which soon turned into a large gulp. Within seconds, she finished her cup and exhaled a relieved breath.

“Phew, this really is the stuff,” Lilith said, her smile still wide. “Honestly, no matter how many times I drink it, it still tastes good. Hm? Why aren’t you drinking yours?”

“…”

“Lilith, do you really remember me?”

Lilith nodded. “Of course. We first met at that summit, after that…”

She began retelling their first meeting, and then their second meeting right after that. It was shocking to hear everything firsthand.

She wasn’t lying, and there was no way she could’ve possibly made this stuff up, especially when she went into more detail than even he did earlier.

But even so, when she finished speaking, she pointed at his glass.

“It’ll get cold soon. You should really drink it, Rael.”

He stared at her for a few moments, still speechless.

Despite that, he took a sip of the tea, not expecting much. However, an unexpected amount of flavor hit his throat. It really tasted as good as she had claimed, which made him forget what had just happened for a moment and gulp the tea down.

When he was done, he set the cup aside on one of the nearby wells, then walked up to Lilith and grabbed her by the shoulders.

Before he could even ask the question he was about to ask, she spoke up:

“I know, I know. I tricked you. Honestly, I was avoiding answering your questions straightforwardly since I knew that if I told a lie, you would notice.”

She put one of her hands on his forearm, her fingers slowly brushing his forearm in circles.

“You know, I still feel a little salty that Zafira remembered first. I only remembered you after she mentioned your name nearly a week ago. Even then, the memories were subtle, barely noticeable.”

“However, there’s one neat trick we demons can do… It’s an inherent trait of ours that bypasses all the bound universal rules,” Lilith trailed off, and with her remaining hand, tapped him on the forehead.

“When a demon wishes to remember something, their horn becomes a stigmata. No one can explain how it happens, but when it does, you relive your entire life in the blink of an eye. The life you relive uses not just your own memories, but the memories of your horn and even the mana itself…”

She took both her hands away and gently swatted his hands off her shoulders.

Crossing her arms behind her back, she tiptoed around, all the while, he watched her in awe.

“I had to relive the past I never wanted to even remember. But among that darkness, I remembered you.”

“A person who, despite not knowing me for long and asking no reward in return, saved me. A person who, against all odds, managed to restore my bloodline, making all the pain that I’ve gone through worthwhile.”

She stopped, and with slightly teary eyes, she bowed to him.

“I know I’ve already said this, but thank you. If not for you, I would still have been the powerless outcast of the Demon King’s family. Now, I’m someone who’s confident enough to eventually take revenge against my father… I just wish that on that day when everything went wrong, I was strong enough to help you.”

It was the second time he had seen her display her vulnerability like this, with the first being when he had gifted her that bloodline.

She was always reserved, hiding behind a mask of confidence, which always cracked when she was around him.

At the moment, the most he could do was hear her out. He felt like anything he said at this point would not mean nearly as much as he had hoped.

And so, he listened. Her tears, her heartfelt words, he made sure to engrave all of them inside his mind.

When she finished speaking, she gave him yet another bow.

“Thank you, and I’m sorry if I’m a thorn in Zafira’s side.”

“…” Rael sighed. “Don’t be sorry. If anything, I hope you two start to get along. You seem very similar in more ways than one.”

She glanced him up and down, a slight smile forming.

“I wonder why we fight?”

Noticing her tone, he raised a brow.

“You’re saying it’s my fault?”

Lilith shrugged.

“One woman is possessive, the other is protective. Both are ambitious, and both care deeply for the people in their hearts.”

She twirled around on her heel while also grabbing another cup of tea from a nearby tray. As she turned back toward him, she took a sip.

Yet as she was about to speak, he spoke instead.

“I don’t like when you two fight either. I already promised I’ll have another talk with her tonight, so I’ll make sure to at least try to mend your relationship,” he said, not that confident.

Mediating an argument between women was the same as trying to break up a catfight. Except both those cats were fighting because of him.

Nonetheless, his reassurance was enough to put a smile on her face as she finished her tea and then turned her back to him.

“Is this a date?” she mused. “If so, as the man, shouldn’t you be a bit more assertive?”

Rael rolled his eyes. His assertiveness now had empty pockets.

Two Premium Coins weren’t a little amount by any means, but there were other ways he could enjoy his time than spend money.

After all, he was once someone who had explored this entire continent back and forth. He knew nearly every single hidden area, and as it so happened, the Demonic Lands had a very lovely location that rivaled even the blue star above Celestara, where Rael and Zafira lived.

And so, having made up his mind, Rael decided to be more ‘assertive.’
