Chapter 495: I’m coming home
Noah told himself not to worry. She’d said she had errands to run, contacts to meet, loose ends to tie up. She’d be back when she was ready.

He pushed the thought aside, heading toward the administrative wing where Sophie had claimed an office. The space was practical rather than luxurious—desk, chairs, holographic displays for contract management. But Sophie had added small touches that made it hers. A plant in the corner that somehow survived despite the building’s recycled air. Photos from their academy days pinned to a corkboard.

She was on a call when he entered, her voice professional as she negotiated terms with someone on the other end. Noah waited, leaning against the wall, watching her work.

She was good at this. Better than good. She navigated faction politics and settlement bureaucracy with the same ease she’d shown leading military operations. When she finally ended the call, she looked up at him with a smile that made his chest warm.

“Hey,” she said.

“Hey.”

She stood, crossed the small office, and kissed him. Not performative, not for show, just honest affection in a quiet moment.

“You fit this role,” Noah observed. “The whole office thing.”

“Are you saying I’m boring now?” Sophie’s tone was teasing.

“I’m saying you look good behind a desk.”

“I can still kick your ass,” she countered. “Don’t forget that.”

“Pretty sure Seraleth just proved anyone can kick my ass if I’m holding back.”

Sophie laughed, pulling him toward the desk, her hands on his chest. “How is she doing? With everything?”

Noah had told her about Seraleth’s struggle to find purpose, about the conversation where the elf had admitted feeling useless. Sophie understood what it was like to carry expectations—her family name had given her similar burdens before everything went sideways.

“She’s good,” Noah said. “Just put her in charge of training. Gave her something concrete to do.”

“And how’s your back?” Sophie’s smile was knowing.

“Space elves are ridiculously strong. I’m pretty sure she could bench press a truck.”

Sophie laughed, pushing him gently against the desk. “I missed you,” she said, her voice softer. “Between contracts and administrative work, feels like we haven’t had time to just… exist together.”

“We’re existing now.”

“For like five minutes before someone needs something.” But she was smiling, her hands moving to his shoulders. “Although, you know that’s not what I meant.”

Noah raised an eyebrow. “What did you mean?”

“How are you and Seraleth getting along?” Her smirk was obvious, teasing.

“Oh God, Sophie.”

“What? I’m just asking about faction dynamics.”

“Sure you are.”

“So?” Sophie’s expression was genuinely interested now, the teasing giving way to something more serious. “Are you two getting along?”

“We’re cool,” Noah said. “She’s helping with training, fitting in with the team. Everything’s fine.”

Sophie studied his face for a moment. “You know she likes you, right?”

“Sophie—”

“I’m serious.” Sophie’s tone was matter-of-fact. “Seraleth left Raiju Prime to come here. For you. She’s doing everything she does to impress you.”

“She came because Lucy sent her. As support.”

“Lucy sent her because Seraleth asked to come.” Sophie poked his chest. “I’m a girl, Noah. I know how we work. The way she looks at you, the way she positions herself near you during briefings, the fact that she challenged you to a sparring match in front of everyone—that’s not just military camaraderie.”

Noah sighed. “Can we give the girl a break? She’s in a foreign world, dealing with human customs, trying to find her place. The last thing I want is to take advantage of her situation.”

“That’s very noble of you.” Sophie’s smile returned. “But I don’t think Seraleth needs protecting from her own feelings. She’s a captain in an alien military. She can handle herself.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying—” Sophie moved closer, her voice dropping to that conspiratorial tone that usually preceded something complicated, “—that we talked about this. On Raiju. About possibilities.”

“Sophie—”

“I’m not saying jump into anything. I’m just saying… don’t close doors just because you think it’s the noble thing to do. If something develops naturally, if she’s interested and you’re interested, I’m not going to be the obstacle.”

Noah looked at her, trying to read whether this was genuine or some kind of test. “You’re serious.”

“Completely.” Sophie kissed him again, softer this time. “I know who I am to you. I’m not worried about that. But I also know you’ve got a lot on your plate, a lot of responsibilities, and if having someone else who understands that helps… I’m okay with it.”

“You’re insane.”

“Maybe.” She grinned. “But you love me anyway.”

Before Noah could respond, someone shouted his name from outside the office.

“Eclipse, my boy!”

Kelvin’s voice, carrying that particular enthusiasm that usually meant either great news or impending chaos.

Noah straightened his clothes, Sophie doing the same with an amused expression. He opened the office door to find Kelvin standing in the hallway with the stupidest grin plastered across his face.

“What?” Noah asked.

“Lila’s back.”

The hallway suddenly felt smaller. Noah exchanged a glance with Sophie, whose expression had shifted to something more neutral, more carefully controlled.

“She’s in the main lobby,” Kelvin continued, still grinning like he was watching the setup for the best drama ever. “Just walked in with her stuff. Asking for you specifically.”

Sophie moved past Noah, her hand briefly touching his arm as she went. “Let’s go welcome her properly.”

They headed toward the main lobby, Noah and Sophie side by side, Kelvin trailing behind them practically vibrating with barely contained energy.

Diana was already there when they arrived, leaning against a wall with her arms crossed and that knowing smirk she got when things were about to get interesting.

“Disaster junkie,” she said to Kelvin as he approached.

“What? I’m just excited to see an old friend.” Kelvin’s grin widened. “Is it my fault if something big is brewing?”

Lila stood near the entrance, a duffel bag at her feet and a smaller pack slung over her shoulder. She’d changed clothes since last time—black tactical pants, fitted tank top that strained against her big bust and that same jacket. Her blonde hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and she looked tired but alert.

Her eyes found Noah immediately, and that familiar smile crossed her face. “Hey, Eclipse.”

“Hey.” Noah approached, Sophie beside him. “Welcome back.”

“Sorry it took longer than expected,” Lila said. “Had to close out some contracts, talk to people, get my shit together.”

“It’s fine,” Sophie said, her voice perfectly professional. “Noah mentioned you’d be staying here. We’ve got quarters ready whenever you need them.”

Lila’s gaze flicked to Sophie, something unreadable passing across her features. “Yeah, about that. I don’t want to impose—”

“You’re not imposing,” Noah interrupted. “We have the space, and you need somewhere to stay. It’s fine.”

“See?” Kelvin chimed in. “We’re all one big happy faction family. No imposing happening here.”

Diana snorted. “You’re enjoying this way too much.”

“Enjoying what? I’m just happy our roster is expanding.”

Noah grabbed Lila’s duffel, ignoring her protest. “Come on, I’ll show you around properly. Get you settled.”

They left the lobby, Noah leading Lila through the building while Sophie returned to her office and Kelvin stayed behind with Diana, who immediately started lecturing him about his obvious entertainment at the situation.

“This place is solid,” Lila observed as they walked. “Way better than most faction buildings I’ve seen. Who designed the layout?”

“Sam coordinated most of it. Kelvin handled tech integration. Sophie managed funding and acquisitions.” Noah gestured toward different sections as they passed. “Ground floor is operations and administration. Second floor is armory and storage. Third floor medical and recovery. Fourth floor living quarters. Fifth floor is command and briefing.”

“Organized,” Lila said approvingly.

They passed training areas where recruits were running drills, common areas where off-duty members gathered, equipment rooms stocked with gear. Lila took it all in, she was clearly cataloging everything.

“How many members now?” she asked.

“Forty personnel. Ten originals from our first recruitment, thirty more who joined over the past week.”

“That’s fast growth.”

“Word spreads. We handled some high-profile contracts, people saw we were legitimate.” Noah stopped at a door marked with an electronic lock. “This one’s yours. Kelvin will key your biometrics to the system later,”

The door opened, revealing a modest but functional living space. Single bed, desk, storage lockers, attached bathroom. Nothing fancy, but clean and private.

Lila dropped her pack on the bed, looked around. “This is good. Better than I expected, honestly.”

“We take care of our people.”

“I’m not your people yet,” Lila pointed out. “I’m just… testing the waters.”

“Fair enough.”

They stood there for a moment, the space between them carrying weight that hadn’t existed before. Months apart, complicated history, unresolved things neither of them had addressed.

“I missed this,” Lila said finally. “Not just you. The whole… team thing. Working with people instead of alone. I forgot what it felt like.”

“You don’t have to work alone anymore.”

“We’ll see.” Her smile returned, but it faded quickly. “Actually, I need to talk to you. About something serious.”

Noah’s attention sharpened. “What kind of serious?”

“The kind that involves the Purge and information I got from my contacts.” Lila’s expression went cold, that unstable edge showing through. “I found something. About that offworld base you mentioned. About what they might be doing with Kruel.”

“What did you find?”

“Not here.” Lila glanced toward the door. “Somewhere private. Just us. This is… it’s bad, Noah. Really bad.”

Before Noah could respond, his communication device buzzed. Sam’s voice came through, professional and clipped.

“Noah, we’ve got an urgent contract request. Settlement under immediate beast attack, category four threats confirmed. They’re asking for Eclipse Faction specifically.”

Noah looked at Lila, torn between the immediate crisis and whatever information she’d uncovered.

“Go,” Lila said. “Handle your contract. We’ll talk after. This isn’t going anywhere.”

“You sure?”

“Yeah.” She smiled, but it didn’t reach her eyes. “Just… be careful out there.”

Noah headed for the door, paused. “We’ll talk tonight. Whatever you found, we’ll deal with it.”

“I know.”

He left, his mind already shifting to the contract, to deployment logistics, to the hundred things that needed his attention as faction leader.

Behind him, Lila stood in her new quarters, her expression darkening as she processed information she’d spent days gathering.

Information that was going to change everything.

—

It was all silence.

Dark, oppressive silence that pressed against consciousness like physical weight. The space between what was and what is, where time moved differently or perhaps didn’t move at all.

Emptiness stretched in every direction. Cold that went beyond temperature, beyond physical sensation, became something existential. This place rejected life, rejected energy, rejected the fundamental concept of existence itself.

But even in the darkest place, there was light.

Not from energy bulbs or artificial sources. Not borrowed or reflected or captured.

Real light. Light born from fusion, from matter converting directly to energy, from the fundamental forces that powered stars.

Lightning.

Blue and brilliant, tearing through the oppressive darkness like a wound in reality. It moved faster than sound, faster than thought, a streak of pure energy that refused to be contained by this prison dimension.

Embedded in that aura of crackling electricity was a face twisted with determination and rage. Teeth gritted, eyes blazing with power that hadn’t dimmed despite length in captivity.

‘How long has it been?’ The thought echoed through the darkness, carried on currents of lightning that illuminated nothing. ‘Days? Weeks? Months? Does time even work the same here?’

The figure accelerated, pushing against the fundamental rules of this space, testing boundaries that shouldn’t exist.

‘The team. Are they okay? Is Noah trapped here too? Did the Eighth Ancestor take them all?’

The lightning intensified, blue energy crackling with renewed fury.

‘I have to get out. I have to break free. They need me. The war is still happening. The Harbingers are still out there. The Eighth won’t stop.’

Sparks erupted from eyes that glowed with pure electrical energy. The figure’s body began to dissolve, not from damage but from acceleration. Pushing beyond physical limits, beyond what matter could sustain, approaching the threshold where existence itself became uncertain.

Faster than sound. Faster than light. Faster than this prison dimension could comprehend.

‘I’m coming.’

The declaration echoed through empty space, carried on lightning that refused to die.

‘Hold on. All of you. Just hold on.’

‘I’m coming home.’
