Chapter 312: Using Death Spikes on the Queen
Sam understood that having a [Star of Hatred] was supposed to be a massive advantage, something that could increase his strength every time his emotions overflowed, yet his current state of mind was nowhere near what the ability required from him.
He knew the mechanics of his own power well enough to understand that the [Stars of Hatred] reacted to genuine hatred, not irritation or frustration, and definitely not to the kind of exhausted annoyance he felt toward the situation he kept finding himself in.
Because the truth was simple.
He did not harbor real hatred toward any of these people.
He was not filled with the burning desire to destroy them or tear them apart.
He was annoyed, deeply, painfully annoyed that he kept dying over and over, sometimes so quickly that he did not even have a chance to understand what had killed him.
And so…
Hatred Boost!
He activated the first ability of his [Stars of Hatred], letting the single star sink into his body like a weight made of scorching light, feeding itself into his soul and spreading its influence through his limbs, his thoughts, and the deepest parts of his instincts.
The star pulsed once. Then twice.
Then the power rushed outward, and Sam felt his attributes rise in a sudden surge of strength that made his entire body hum with force.
And at that moment…
Fwoosh! BAM!
Undyne launched forward like a comet wrapped in darkness, the same unending flames from before still crawling up her armor and spear, still warping the air around her as if the world itself feared her existence.
Her spear carved through the air, and this time, Sam actually managed to see a faint outline of its movement.
It was nothing clear or easy. It was still nearly impossible.
But even so, even if it was only a fraction of her true speed and strength, Sam could see something.
And that alone meant everything.
Because even if he barely caught the movement, even if he barely processed what her body was doing, it meant there was a possibility for him to react.
[Because if all other options fail, you know what to do.]
Sam nodded, even though inside he hated that he had to acknowledge the thought at all.
He understood exactly what the voice was referring to.
And he despised the idea of using that ability. But he also knew he might not have a choice.
And so…
FWOOSH!
Undyne thrust forward, faster than before and far more aggressive in her movements, but Sam forced his body to move the instant his instincts screamed at him, and for the first time since the fight began, he dodged one of her attacks.
“Huh?” the queen muttered, clearly surprised that her strike had missed and clearly not expecting him to slip away from something that should have been unavoidable.
But Sam did not hesitate or give her a chance to recover.
He was already moving, and he swung his primordial sword with everything he had.
He slashed at her while she was midair, still caught in the small opening created from missing her attack, the blade cutting along the edge of her armor.
And…
Slash!
Undyne caught herself in the air, stabilizing instantly, and her gaze shot toward the place where the blow had connected, not because she felt pain but because she had not expected anything to touch her at all.
“Looks like you aren’t strong enough yet to harm me,” she said while grinning, “I’m too durable—”
But then her smile faltered. Her eyes narrowed. And she saw it.
A thin line. A barely visible cut. A single drop of blood sliding down.
The injury was tiny, almost insignificant, but Undyne understood what it meant immediately.
Even a small wound was a threat.
Because if Sam’s determination held out, if he kept pushing forward without stopping, if he kept stacking his damage no matter how tiny it was, then eventually she would be in real danger.
But more than anything…
Ding!
A [Death Cross] with a [I] made of bones appeared on her small wound, hanging in the air like a curse waiting to be activated.
‘I guess it doesn’t matter whether I deal a big injury or not,’ Sam thought with a growing grin, ‘As long as it does damage, it will count.’
Still, Undyne was not the type to panic or crumble, not when the fate of her entire kingdom depended on her strength and resilience.
She would not retreat. And so she rushed forward.
Slash!
[You have died.]
Ding!
[“Determination is Fuel” has activated.]
Sam could not dodge everything, and he knew that better than anyone, because the next several dozen strikes were so incredibly fast that he could not even register the movement before the world went dark again.
Undyne was not even using her full strength.
She was not trying to show her true capabilities.
It felt more like she wanted to win while holding back as much as possible, as if she did not want anyone to see her full power.
[She’s just like us, won’t reveal all of her abilities because they’re always watching.]
By “they,” the voice meant the [Colossals] and the [King], but if that was true, then it meant something unexpected.
It meant these people did not like the watchers either.
Sam and the queen might even share a strange and uncomfortable common ground.
Fwish!
Still, Undyne kept slashing at him, strike after strike crashing into him with speed so intense that Sam could barely register anything beyond the sensation of dying repeatedly.
And eventually…
Slash!
Sam managed to cut Undyne’s arm, inflicting another tiny amount of damage.
Ding!
A second [Death Cross] appeared.
Then another. Then another after dozens more deaths.
Sam slowly stacked more and more marks on her body.
‘Only one more…’
He attempted to use several of his skills in between deaths, but none of them worked.
Undyne was simply too strong, too resilient, too fast for any ability he had to matter.
But eventually, as more minutes passed and Sam’s number of deaths continued rising…
Ding!
[“Primordial Barrier’s” cooldown has ended.]
Fifteen minutes had passed already, and the barrier returned, giving him a shield he desperately needed.
But also…
Primordial Clone!
Sam summoned his clone, which appeared in front of him immediately.
The clone’s cooldown was even shorter than the barrier’s, only ten minutes, and seeing that number remind him of its availability made Sam realize he should have been using it more often.
And so…
“Mother, there’s two of them now,” Vyxen shouted, lifting her bow and preparing to fire.
“Don’t,” Undyne said, shaking her head, “They seem… different.”
Sam’s expression had been neutral since the beginning of the fight, and because of that, the others had slowly grown less tense.
But the moment they saw the [Primordial Clone], and the strange way it kept smiling, the way it held its sword, the way it leaned forward with excitement, Undyne’s eyes sharpened and her stance shifted.
“I guess it’s normal you wouldn’t die,” Undyne muttered, “You’re the last one after all… the most determined.”
“Perhaps,” Sam said with a tired sigh, “One more hit, I guess.”
Fwish!
Undyne launched herself forward again, appearing between Sam and the clone with a single blur of movement, her spear cutting through the air with lethal precision.
But…
Bang!
Her attack struck the [Primordial Barrier], and the shield absorbed the blow perfectly, losing only a single point of durability.
“Wha—”
“MOTHER!”
Sam and the clone lifted their swords at the same time, channeling all their strength, all their determination, and all the power of their affinities before slashing at Undyne’s chest with more force than they had used at any point before.
SLASH!
The wound that formed on Undyne’s chest was significantly deeper, a real injury with real blood spilling out.
And at that moment, Sam saw two more bone symbols appear.
[V] and [VI].
[Alright, let’s end this battle.]
Sam nodded, preparing to use his [Death Cross] class skill.
His eyes flared, filled with resolve. He was ready to activate it.
But…
“I tried really hard to hold back,” Undyne said as she stepped back, her expression darkening while her aura began to swell, “But… looks like I don’t need to do that.”
Fwish… BOOM!
Her power exploded outward in a massive blast, the flames intensifying, her lance growing in size, and the aura surrounding her shifting from dangerous to terrifying.
[She was using less than half of her actual power, damn, we’re fucked…]
“This might actually be over,” Sam muttered with a nervous laugh as he took a slow step back.
“=)” the clone continued smiling, completely unbothered.
[Though… even if she wasn’t using any of her skills and only half of her power, her durability remains the same =)]
Even so, Sam could see Undyne continuing to gather power, and he understood that if she grew any stronger, even his determination would eventually break.
And so…
“Calm down,” Sam said, lifting his arm, “Let’s talk.”
“I’m… not… talking to the likes of—”
Death Cross: Death Spikes!
BOOM!
Before Undyne could finish her sentence or release her fully charged power, the crosses on her body erupted with force.
“MOTHER, WATCH OUT!” Vyxen screamed.
“Q-Queen, something is happening!”
None of them had time to react.
Bam! Bam! Bam!
Spikes burst out from each cross, impaling Undyne’s body through every wound Sam had previously made.
Blood sprayed out, and the soldiers around them froze in shock.
It was the first time Undyne had ever taken such a brutal hit.
And it came from someone far weaker than her.
But Sam did not move, because he knew one simple truth.
There was no chance she would die from this.
[If she gets up, we’ll have to use “Supernova”]
Sam nodded.
