Chapter 291: Opening the “Soul Gate”, Last Bit of Mercy
Rumble! Clang!
After a few seconds, the last chain of the massive gate released itself from the ground and enrolled the final wheel in a slow but unstoppable motion that echoed across the entire realm.
The heavy sound of that immense chain moving sent tremors across the earth, as if the land itself was reacting to the final lock being undone.
And just like that, now all four massive chains that had been planted deep into the ground were released fully, leaving the enormous gate without any of the restraints that had held it shut for countless ages.
Fwish! Ding!
The symbols carved into the pedestals began to glow fiercely, radiating an intense crimson light that pulsed like a heartbeat.
The massive symbols engraved into the gate itself also started glowing in the same way, each of them shining brighter as the power from the artifacts inside the pedestals awakened fully.
And then the items he had placed on each pedestal, the [Eye of Void], the [Scale of Judgment], the [Tendril of Darkness], and the [Heaven and Hell Necklace], began to lift themselves up from their platforms.
They floated slowly at first, rising just a few inches, swaying slightly in the air as if testing the energy around them.
Fwish…
The items floated higher and higher, glowing more intensely with every passing second, until the light around them became almost blinding.
And then, without any warning at all…
BAM!
The [Eye of Void] charged with full force, turning completely white like a burning star, and rushed toward the wheel with the eye symbol carved into it.
It shot forward like a comet, leaving a trail of white energy behind it as it collided straight into the wheel.
BOOM!
The impact was so loud that it echoed like thunder, and the wheel shattered instantly, breaking apart into fragments of dust and energy.
And right after that, the chain connected to that wheel disintegrated entirely, fading into nothingness as if it had never existed in the first place.
One by one, all of the other items repeated the same action.
Each of them transformed into a burst of violent energy, shot toward the wheel with the corresponding symbol, and destroyed it completely.
All four wheels were shattered.
All four chains vanished in a storm of power.
The pedestals trembled violently from the shock of the release, sinking back into the ground afterward and leaving Sam alone in front of the enormous gate, now unsealed and waiting.
And suddenly…
Rumble!
The gate itself began to tremble, the colossal slabs of stone vibrating as the ancient mechanisms finally recognized that their restraints had been removed.
With the four wheels and the chains locking it in place completely gone, it could now open fully for the first time since the Upper Realm existed.
And very slowly but surely, the massive doors started to open.
The sound of ancient stone shifting filled the air, deep and heavy and overwhelming.
[It is time.]
Sam looked at the gate with a nervous expression, unable to hide the tension building inside him.
A small amount of sweat appeared on his forehead as the pressure radiating from beyond the gate grew sharper and more intense.
No matter how calm or strong he was, Sam still had a terrible feeling about this moment.
Beyond this gate was the [Soul] Realm, the final realm, the one where everything would truly end.
Either Sam would end everything quickly and defeat the [King], or he would fall here, and the [King] would maintain his rule forever.
Regardless of the outcome, Sam knew that this was the point of no return.
He simply waited for the gate to open completely, preparing himself mentally for what he would face.
But then… he felt something touch his shoulder gently.
Turning around, Sam saw the [Primordial Clone] standing behind him.
“Oh.”
Sam had not unsummoned it or given it any orders, so it had probably been following him the entire time without saying or doing anything.
He had been so focused on speaking to the [King], placing the artifacts, and opening the gate that he had completely forgotten the clone was still present.
Still, it was reassuring to know that the clone had been quietly behind him this whole time.
“=)”
The smile on its face grew wider as it looked at the gate next to Sam, watching it open with a strange excitement that reflected Sam’s own mixed emotions.
‘Well, no point in worrying about anything now,’ Sam sighed as he looked at the primordial sword in his hand, ‘I have to move forward.’
He allowed himself a brief moment to think about what he might do once this was all over.
He imagined living peacefully together with Seraphine and Belle, the three of them finally safe after everything they had gone through.
He imagined introducing them to Lily, Chloe, and Alicia, and he was sure that all of them would become friends easily.
The thought gave him a small moment of warmth and comfort before the heavy reality of what was coming pulled him back.
But right as Sam was about to continue his thoughts…
[There is no such ending for us.]
Another panel appeared, and its tone immediately reminded him of the cold truth.
[Didn’t I already say it before? The Primordial will always be alone.]
“By that, I thought that you meant we’d always fight alone,” Sam said, tilting his head in confusion, “Because I can’t really say I was ‘alone’ in terms of relationships.”
[Think of it however you like, it doesn’t change what I said.]
[And if you do not understand now, you will later, everything will become clearer.]
“You are literally my consciousness, don’t try to be cryptic all of a sudden.”
Sam felt more confused with every passing second, but he forced himself to stay focused.
The gate continued to open, and after another full minute…
Ding!
[You have opened the “Soul Gate”]
[Step forward to enter the “Soul Realm”, but once you enter, you will not be able to go back until everything is accomplished.]
[Make sure to do everything you want to do before, the gate will remain open forever.]
[This is the final mercy you will ever.]
Sam looked at the panels carefully.
The gate was fully opened now, its enormous doors spread apart to allow anyone to enter.
Beyond the threshold, he could only see a veil of complete darkness, impossible to pierce through or understand.
But now that it was opened, Sam could finally sense the overwhelming aura radiating from the other side, far stronger than anything he had felt in the Upper Realm.
‘I wonder just how the [Soul] Realm will work,’ Sam thought, ‘But I guess there’s only one way to find out.’
He took a step forward, ready to walk through the gate and embrace whatever awaited him on the other side.
But…
[Aren’t you forgetting something?]
Sam froze, and when he read that panel, his eyes widened immediately.
‘Oh shit, I told Seraphine and Belle I’d come back when I was done, yet instead I directly went to the [Seventh Zone].’
Right after that, another panel appeared, but this one was different.
It wasn’t from his [Hell-Mode Analysis], nor was it the [King] speaking.
It was a dark panel with several mixed colors inside it.
[Are you sure you want to stop your “streak” to return?]
[You could go ahead right now, and face the horrors beyond.]
“Sure,” Sam said with a light grin, “But they’re still my friends, I wanna see them one last time at least.”
[…You truly are different from all of us, no wonder they call you the “True Primordial”]
Sam understood immediately that this time it was the other primordials speaking to him.
[Go ahead, do what you needed to do, because after that… we’ll be alone.]
[And whether you fail or not, I feel like we’ll be able to meet =)]
Sam grinned even more as he looked at his [Primordial Clone].
Fwish!
He unsummoned it in one smooth motion, making it disappear instantly.
Then, without a moment of hesitation, he opened up his [Realm Map] and selected the [Forsaken Kingdom], more precisely the location of his mansion.
‘Alright, last break, and I’ll also use it to get my rewards from the two [Mystery Boxes] and even evolve any skills if I get one from it.’
He knew it would be smarter to collect the rewards from the two mystery boxes before entering the [Soul Realm], because anything he gained could help him prepare for what was coming.
Ding!
[You will be teleported to your “Mansion” in the “Forsaken Kingdom”]
Golden light surrounded Sam for a few seconds as the teleportation activated, enveloping him completely.
He closed his eyes as he felt the shifting sensation of the teleport taking hold.
‘Here we go,’ he grinned.
…
