45: Thankful Mother-in-law Ada 45: Thankful Mother-in-law Ada “Kerry, you actually made it.” Ada’s voice, I’m telling you, it was as if someone had drizzled melted chocolate over velvet and then hit play.

She might have whispered pure gibberish, and I still would have been to the ground with shivers.

I could swear the whole time I was feeling her every word going through my ribs, little shivers all along my spine.

Like, alright, totally over the top.

I hadn’t even flipped my head yet, and bam, already, fire was climbing up my neck and settling down low.

Then Ada’s eyes, sharp as barbed wire, scrolled around Kerry and fixed directly on me.

For a moment only, she looked at me as if she was going to attack.

It was hotter than walking barefoot on a burnt August pavement.

My heart did some odd tap dance-I’m pretty sure it faltered.

But then, curtain down.

Showtime smile.

Sweet, maybe a little smug.

Yeah, she knew.

“And Dexter,” she said, my name sounded like a dare.

“Come on in.” I obeyed.

The moment I stepped inside, the air changed.

Thicker.

Warmer.

The scent of burning herbs and something sweeter-like crushed berries and warm skin-filled my lungs.

My heart just wouldn’t chill-felt like I’d drunk a triple espresso.

My hands?

Fidgeting at my sides, like they had a mind of their own.

That firelight just went wild, spilling everywhere-hot, gold, alive-ancient… Shadows stretched out, all slinky, crawling up the walls like they had secrets or something.

And then boom-there she was.

Ruth.

Postured by the fire, doing that thing where you lock your hands together so you don’t accidentally reach for something (or someone?).

Her hair, stupidly perfect-white, all soft, loose waves, tossed over her shoulders, catching the fire so it sparkled like she was wearing moonlight.  That glow made her skin look like honey, traced out her cheekbones, gave her lips this-look, I’m not even gonna lie-this inviting curve.

Lips parted, like maybe she was holding her breath, one second away from saying something or doing something.

Her chest-rising and falling, slow as if every inhale was some big secret she was about to spill.

As if she’d been waiting for me.

Ada’s voice cut through the haze of my thoughts, smooth as aged whiskey but carrying the weight of a command.

“Dexter.” She stepped closer, her presence a warm pressure at my back.

“Thank you… for accepting my daughter.” I forced my face into an expression of sincere gratitude, my voice smooth, kind.

“Aunt Ada, it’s my blessing that Sister Ruth is going to be my woman.” Ruth’s face turned red, and she was nervously twisting her fingers.

She was shy, just a bit naive, which made me want her very much.

However, I could recognise from her eyes – the flicker of curiosity, the way her intake of breath became quicker when she looked at me.

She wanted this.

She wanted me.

And I was going to have all of it.

The voice of Ada interrupted my reverie, uncertain but resolute.

“Dexter…

I don’t want to be a trouble to both of you.

So I think it would be better for me to relocate to another hut.” Oh no, you don’t.

I wasn’t about to let this opportunity slip away.

Two women under one roof?

A mature woman like Ada, with a body made for sin, and a young, tight little thing like Ruth?

No fucking way was I letting Ada leave.

I stepped forward, my voice firm but gentle, the picture of a good, honorable man.

“No, Aunt Ada.” I shook my head, letting my hand rest on Ruth’s shoulder-possessive, but not too possessive.

“You are Ruth’s mother.

And you will never be a burden.” I glanced at Kerry, who gave me a subtle, approving nod.

Good boy, her eyes seemed to say.

“Aunt Hina told me that as a healer-and as a hunter-I can get enough rations in winter for all of us.

We’ll have more than enough to live comfortably.” Ada hesitated, her fingers worrying at the edge of her wrap.

“But-” Kerry stepped in smoothly, her voice soft but final.

“Sister Ada, listen to the children.” Her hand rested on Ada’s arm, her touch reassuring-but there was an edge to it, a command.

“Or do you want Ruth to be sad?” Ruth’s eyes widened, her lips trembling as she stepped closer to me.

“Dexter…

thank you.” Her voice was barely above a whisper, her fingers brushing against my arm-timid, submissive.

“I promise to take care of you…

and serve you well…

and never create any problems for you.” I looked down at her, my cock throbbing at the way she was already submitting to me.

But my gaze flicked back to Ada, who was watching us with a mix of relief and something else-something warmer, something hungrier.

Oh, this is going to be fun.

I reached out, my hand cupping Ruth’s cheek-gentle, loving-before turning to Ada.

“Aunt Ada,” I said, my voice low, sincere, “we’re family now.

And family stays together.” Kerry’s lips curled into a slow, knowing smile beside me, her dark eyes gleaming with something far more dangerous than approval.

Good boy, that smirk seemed to say.

Now let’s see what you’re really made of.

And I would show her.

Because tonight wasn’t just about Ruth.

Okay, real talk-tonight wasn’t about picking sides or playing coy.

I was staking a claim on both women, no shame, no hesitation.

Yeah, it hit me right between the legs.

My pulse was going mad, thrumming so loud I almost missed everything else.

The air inside that tiny hut?

Heavy, like breathing in thunder before rain.

Kerry sliced through the quiet with that silky voice of hers, cool as you please.

She didn’t even look at me-locked eyes on Ruth instead, talking lower, voice dripping with something naughty.

“Ruth… wanna let me give you a hand?” Ruth?

Oh man, you could see her breath stutter, her fingers fidgeting before she nodded, barely making a sound.

“Hmm,” she managed, quiet but dead serious.

“I will be outside.” Ada exhaled, a sound almost like a laugh, although there was no humor in it.

Her turning away from the door of the hut was as if she had done it with elegance and without haste.

Nevertheless, a part of me was against the fact that she was going to leave.

It just didn’t sit well with me that she would be out there by herself when Kerry and Ruth had me all to themselves.

Not like she didn’t fit in or whatever-it’s just, hell, I wanted her here.

Wanted to watch her pulse stutter, catch that flicker in her eyes when she clocked she was smack in the middle of things instead of lurking on the sidelines.

Wasn’t exactly my brain running the show-more like muscle memory.

“Aunt… Ada.” God, my voice sounded shot, rough around the edges.

“If you want, y’know… stick around.” Ada stopped dead, shoulders locking up.

When she looked over, her face was a blank wall, but there was something sharp in her eyes-was that surprise?

Or was she laughing at me?

“Is that okay, Dexter?” She said it kind of breezy, but man, I could hear the bite underneath.

Testing me, for sure.

“Probably better if I don’t spoil your big night.

Some old lady hanging around… let’s be real, I’d just get in the way.” She shot this sideways look at Kerry, quick, then caught my eye again, mouth twitching like she’s trying not to smile.

“You’ve got Kerry.

That’s all you need.” Confusion coiled in my chest.

What the hell did that mean?

I’m pretty sure Kerry picked up on whatever flickered across my face; she’s got radar for that stuff.

Before I could blink, she was inching over, all sly, until she was basically glued to my side.

Then she went right for my ear, close enough that her breath danced across my skin.

I mean, hell, it felt like she was about to whisper something just for me, some sneaky little confession I wasn’t supposed to hear.

“Dexter…” she breathed out.

Then she just stopped, stuck chewing over her next words.  ‘I don’t know why.

You’re not like the rest.

Most men?

They can’t stand women like me.

Older.

Messy.” Her fingers slipped down my arm, light as anything, but holy hell-it sent a shock straight through me.
