Chapter 243: Pride Turns to Pleading
“Stay still.” My grip on her wrist tightened just slightly, my eyes locked onto hers, my voice dropping to a low, commanding murmur. “You should be more careful, Mother-in-law.” My other hand cupped her cheek, my thumb brushing away a stray tear that had escaped, my touch surprisingly tender. “You’re shaking.”
Jennifer’s breath hitched, her body trembling as she stared up at me, her expression a mix of confusion and something deeper—something that made my pulse quicken. “I… I’m fine,” she stammered, but her voice lacked conviction, her eyes flickering down to where my fingers still held her wrist, my touch warm and possessive.
I didn’t let go. Instead, I stepped closer, my voice a dark, velvet murmur, my body pressing against hers as if I could shield her from everything else. “No, you’re not,” I whispered, my lips brushing against her ear, my breath hot against her skin.
“But I’ll take care of you.” My free hand slid down to her waist, pulling her against me, my touch firm and unyielding. “Always.”
Jennifer’s breath hitched, her eyes filling with tears as she looked up at me, her expression crumbling. “You…” she whispered, her voice breaking, her hands suddenly clutching at my shirt as if I were the only thing keeping her from falling apart.
And then, without warning, she hugged me tightly, burying her face against my chest, her body shaking with sobs. “Don’t… leave me… ever,” she pleaded, her voice muffled against my shirt, her fingers digging into the fabric like she was afraid I’d disappear if she let go. “Promise me…”
I felt the weight of her despair, the way her body trembled against mine. I understood it—too well. Her husband didn’t listen to her. Her daughter, though she loved her, exhausted her with constant demands. And now, in this unfamiliar place, surrounded by people who didn’t truly see her, she felt utterly alone. Isolated. Abandoned.
My hand stroked her hair, my voice rough with emotion. “Don’t worry,” I murmured, my lips pressing against the top of her head. “I will never leave you alone… even if you want me to… I will never.”
Jennifer’s breath hitched again, her grip on me tightening for just a second before she suddenly pulled back—just enough to look up at me, her eyes still glistening with tears. And then, before I could react, she surged forward, her lips crashing against mine in a kiss that was desperate, hungry, and real.
I froze for half a second—shocked—but then my hands were in her hair, my body pressing her against the counter as I kissed her back with the same fierce desperation. Her lips were soft but demanding, her tears mixing with the heat of her breath as she poured everything into that kiss—the loneliness, the frustration, the raw, aching need to be seen, to be wanted. It was like she was drowning, and I was the only thing keeping her afloat.
When she finally pulled back, her breath came in ragged gasps, her forehead resting against mine. Her voice was barely a whisper, her fingers still tangled in my shirt. “Mike…”
I could feel the weight of that single word—like she was saying so much more than just my name. My hands cupped her face, my thumbs brushing away the last of her tears, my own breath unsteady. I was about to pull her back in, to kiss her again, to promise her everything.
But then, just as suddenly, Jennifer pulled back, wiping her tears with the back of her hand. A small, shaky smile played on her lips, her cheeks flushed with a mix of embarrassment and something warmer.
“Now…” she said, her voice teasing but still thick with emotion, “go back, you bad boy.” She gave me a gentle push, her fingers lingering on my chest for just a second longer than necessary. “Wake Emily up… or do you want to eat your mother-in-law here?”
Her voice hitched on the last words, her blush deepening as she realized what she’d just said. She bit her lip, her eyes darting away from mine, but the smirk tugging at the corners of her mouth gave her away. She was teasing me. Taunting me.
I chuckled, low and dark, my hands dropping to her waist, pulling her just a little closer before I let her go. “Careful, Mother-in-law,” I murmured, my voice rough with promise, “or I just might take you up on that offer.”
Jennifer’s breath hitched, her eyes widening for just a second before she playfully swatted at my chest. “Go!” she hissed, but there was no real anger in her voice—just heat, just need. “Before I change my mind!”
I smirked, stepping back with deliberate slowness, my eyes never leaving Jennifer’s. “Oh, I’m counting on it,” I said, my voice a velvet promise, thick with unspoken intentions. Then, I turned and walked out of the kitchen, leaving her flushed, breathless, and—if the way her fingers pressed against her lips was any indication—already aching for more.
I made my way to Emily’s room, knocking softly before pushing the door open. She stirred at the sound, blinking sleepily as she sat up. “Mike?” she mumbled, rubbing her eyes.
“Dinner’s ready,” I said, keeping my tone light. “Mother-in-Law is cooking dinner. You should come help her.”
Emily yawned, stretching before swinging her legs off the bed. “Okay, okay, I’m coming,” she said, following me out of the room and toward the kitchen.
After some time, Jennifer had already set the table, the aroma of the meal filling the air. But what caught my attention wasn’t the food—it was where Jennifer chose to sit.
Instead of taking her usual spot next to Oliver, she slid into the chair beside me, her thigh brushing against mine as she settled in. The move was subtle, but it wasn’t lost on me—or on Oliver.
Oliver’s eyes flicked to Jennifer, then to me, his expression unreadable. But he didn’t say anything. Instead, he cleared his throat and turned his attention to the table. “Mike,” he said, his voice steady, “I’ve talked to the people, and now you don’t have to go out and take any risks.”
Emily’s face lit up with excitement. “Dad, does that mean you’ve assigned him to a desk job? That’s great!”
Oliver shook his head slightly, a small smile playing on his lips. “It’s not entirely a desk job, but it’s still safe. Here. And much better.”
