Chapter 399: Chapter 399 Serena’s Origin
Avery had not expected such a visceral reaction from his mother when he brought up telling his father about her returned memories and true past.
He was not sure if she was ashamed of what she had done, or if it was truly so tortuous that she could not bear to recount what had happened to her.
“Okay, mom. I shouldn’t have pushed you. If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s fine. But what are you going to do about your memories now? You said that you could seal them away again. Is that what you plan on doing?”
For a few moments, Serena struggled to find and answer to Avery’s questions.
She wanted more than anything to forget again and go back to how things had been before.
Yet, Avery knew about her now, and his own condition put him at risk. Something that she could not help him with if she forced herself to forget again.
The thought of sealing his memories and ability did come to her mind, but that was likely something that would be impossible to accomplish.
Messing with her own mind and body was one thing but doing it to another without causing serious harm was another.
There was also the fact that the manner in which Avery had awakened the dormant potential within him was vastly different compared to how it had been accomplished in Serena’s case. She might be unable to surpass his powers even if he fully gave himself over to her.
“For now, I’ll just have to live with it. A mother can endure a lot for her child. Just because my old memories are back, doesn’t mean that the time I’ve spent with you, and your father has been erased. I still remember it all vividly, and they’re memories that I cherish deeply.” Serena said, seeming to have calmed down a great deal now.
She seemed to want a hug from Avery as reassurance, but she hesitated as she leaned in.
Avery did not know what was making his mother hold back, but he knew what he needed to do at this moment.
He leaned in and wrapped his arms around her. Doing his best to comfort her.
“I know that you want to help me, mom, and I want to do the same for you. If you need me for anything, just ask. If it’s within my power, I’ll do it. You may not fully realize this yet, but your son’s become a bit of a bigshot in the mercenary world. I’ve got several powerful connections I can turn to should it be necessary. Especially my soon to be mother-in-law. One word from her daughter, and she sent a small fleet to come and protect you and dad. So, you don’t have to do this alone.” Avery said, glancing towards the door where there were several trustworthy people willing to fight and put their lives on the line for both of them.
Some tears started to form in the corner of Serena’s eyes, and she looked at Avery proudly.
“When did my son grow up so much. It feels like to me that just yesterday you were running around in your underwear with a shirt tied around your neck and pretending to be an action superhero.”
A grimace formed on Avery’s face as his mother brought up an embarrassing moment from his childhood.
“I definitely deserved that. Just please don’t bring that or anything else along the same line up in front of the others. I’m the one in charge of my group, so I’d prefer to remain as a strong leader in their minds.” Avery said pleadingly.
However, his mother smiled at him teasingly, and said, “Well, I’ll avoid telling most of them. But I might let a few things slip around you two lovely, soon to be wives. Since I can’t be around all the time, they’re the ones that will need to keep you in line. So, make sure you don’t upset them, or somethings you don’t want others to know might get out.”
The light in Avery’s eyes seemed to dimmish as he heard this.
The last thing he wanted was for Kasandra and Jasmine to know about embarrassing moments from his childhood. He wanted to remain the cool and stoic mercenary that had saved them in their eyes.
Unfortunately, there was nothing he could do to stop his mother. She was intent on spreading these stories, and it would be impossible to always keep her away from his fiancées.
“We should probably head back to the others now.” Avery said as he listlessly got up. “I suppose that we should say that you’ve been scolding me for getting myself involved with such dangerous people. That’ll probably be believable enough.”
Avery figured that his secret conversation with his mother had wound down and that it was time to go.
Except, before he could take a single step away from the couch, he felt his mother’s hand grab his arm.
“No, not yet. After thinking about it more and settling my emotions, I realized that I owe you a more proper explanation.” Serena said, a pained but determined look in her eyes.
Seeing that his mother had steeled herself, he sat back down and waited intently for her to begin.
“It was all so long ago now, that I can barely remember the beginning. But I’m pretty sure that when I was around three is when I had my first tangible memory. I was already in that damnable lab, and I was hooked up to all manner of devices that were poking and prodding me. I’m still not entirely sure even now what they were doing at that time, but I believe that they were checking my genetic aptitude. Making sure I was a suitable test subject for their project.”
Serena said this all with a clear disdain in her voice. Obviously, her past had been unbelievably traumatic and painful. Which was likely one of the main reasons that she was so worried about Avery now. She did not want him to end up in a similar situation to the one she had been born into.
