Chapter 397: Chapter 397 A Serious Talk with Mom (2)
“Are you really my mother?”

As soon as these words left Avery’s mouth, he regretted saying them.

His mother had just been acting so strange, and the weird energy coming off of her was something he had never seen from her before.

Yet, when he saw Serena’s face become deathly pale, and a sadness in her eyes deeper than even during the time his father was in critical condition, Avery felt a stab in his chest from guilt.

While he was now certain that this was without a shadow of a doubt his mother, it was because no one would be able to fake how hurt she looked right now.

Having her son question whether she was actually his mother while wearing a suspicious expression had broken her heart.

The pain she was feeling right now was a lot worse than she could have expected. Causing her to start sobbing.

“I’m sorry mom. I shouldn’t have said that.” Avery said as he embraced her.

It took nearly a minute of Avery comforting her for her to calm down. Eventually though, she looked up at him with teary eyes. A strong determination in her gaze.

“No, perhaps you were right to question. In some way, I’m not the mother that you know.”

This only baffled Avery further, but he kept his mouth shut and saved his questions for after Serena explained.

“My past that you know isn’t exactly the truth. I wasn’t brought up in an orphanage, but a lab. They did horrible things to me there, which is why I wanted to forget it all and start over with a blank slate. But I was forced to remember recently. The energy you can feel from me is the results of their experimentation. That’s why I’m so concerned for you. Whatever power you have shouldn’t have come about naturally. That’s why I’m so worried that something horrible was done to you and that you might be in even greater danger still.”

Avery’s thoughts felt jumbled by the information that his mother had just told him.

It hit him like a truck and left his mind racing as he processed everything.

“So, you’ve had amnesia this entire time?” Avery asked, wanting to get a clearer picture of his mother’s condition.

“Sort of. I forced all my memories related to my time as a guineapig deep into my subconscious and filled my mind with fake memories to fill in the gaps. But that’s not what’s important right now. Someone must have helped you awaken the ability you have. If you’re trying to protect them, you shouldn’t. They aren’t your friend and no matter what they might have said, they are just trying to use you. So please tell me who they are. That way I can help you.”

Finally, it dawned on Avery what exactly his mother was getting at.

She thought that he was in some sort of trouble or had been experimented on like she had in the past.

For a moment, he questioned whether Doctor Raiti had done something to him on purpose and was playing some sort of long con.

However, he quickly shook that notion off.

She had been genuinely surprised by the changes that were occurring to his body after the augmentations were already completed. To the point that she had tracked him down afterwards and thrown a sort of tantrum to get him to agree to let her examine him in more detail.

In the end she had even been willing to join his crew and became the doctor on his carrier ship despite preferring to isolate herself and focus on her research.

‘If everything has actually been some ploy of hers to catch me off guard, then she’d probably be the best actress in the galaxy.’

Avery dismissed that notion immediately. Doctor Raiti was clearly not the type of person that had enough control over her emotions and desires to fool anyone even in the short term.

“I don’t know what happened to you mom, but for me it was just an unforeseen side effect of receiving bionic augmentations. The doctor that worked on me, as well as Jasmine and Kasandra, grew a new organ for me that produces cells similar to those that species capable of regenerating limbs and organs have. I can’t say for certain, but I believe that’s probably what caused the changes in me.” Avery said, doing his best to explain what little he understood about his own condition.

Nevertheless, at least one mystery that had been bothering him had been cleared up.

He had wondered why his body was undergoing some sort of metamorphosis and he had gained a clear inhuman ability.

The answer to that was clear now. He was different because his mother was as well. Whatever allowed her to manifest an unusual power had been passed down to him.

Nianni’s words came to the forefront of Avery’s mind in this moment. “Perhaps you are also a descendant of a god.”

At the time he had thought what she was saying was farfetched, but now he was not so sure.

Of course, he did not believe in any so called “gods”. Yet perhaps there were entities out there that had unimaginable powers that had left behind children just like in the story Nianni had relayed to Avery, Kasandra, and Jasmine.

Then those children would have had their own, and so on and so forth.

The traits that had made the progenitors of the family so powerful were not often passed along, but maybe through some sort of atavism they would very rarely express themselves again.

‘That’s just a theory cobbled together mostly from what I heard from Nianni. It could also just be a genetic mutation of some kind.’

Avery was now more determined to figure out the answers to the secrets held within him.

Except, now was not the time to let his mind wander off. His still very distressed mother right in front of him required his entire attention.
