Chapter 396: Chapter 396 A Serious Talk with Mom
Avery continued to hug his mother and father for over a minute before pulling back from them.

He could hear them faintly crying as well, and when he had moved slightly away to look at them, he saw that tears were streaming down their faces as well.

With all that had happened, the emotions between the three of them had burst out all at once upon seeing each other.

It had been stressful for all of them.

Avery may not have been in the thick of it like the two of them, but the ever-present worry had been eating away at him.

As for his parents, being hunted by dangerous criminals had been a nerve-wracking experience to say the least. Especially for Serena.

She had killed someone, and though she had forced herself to forget momentarily, the seal had already been pulled off on the past she never wanted to remember.

While she had done her best to put a lid back on her memories, they were less tightly locked up now.

And many things had changed about Avery since the two of them had last seen each other. One of which happened to be the physical augmentations that had vastly altered his body.

Similar to when Avery had felt a connection to Nianni, there was some sort of link to his mother that was only faintly present.

Yet, when he focused on this weird feeling for just a moment, there was some sort of sudden surge between them.

He had been looking into his mother’s eyes when he saw them flash red for a second.

After that, Serena grabbed her head and screamed out in pain.

“What’s wrong!?” Robert shouted as he grabbed his wife in concern.

She was shaking and grasping her head.

Unsure of what was going on, Avery moved to grab a dose of nanomachine medicine he always kept on himself.

Before he could use it, however, Serena stopped screaming and held her hand up.

She was still hunched over, but she breathed in and out heavily a few times and seemed to recover.

At some point she had grabbed a hold of Robert’s hand and was squeezing down on it as if looking for something to anchor herself to reality.

“Sorry to worry you, dear. I just had a sudden sharp headache for a bit. It’s fine now.”

Serena tried to reassure everyone that she was fine, but the looks of concern from everyone, especially Avery and Robert.

“Mom, why don’t you take this just in case. It should help with any pain you might be feeling.” Avery said, holding out a pill with medical nanomachines in it.

She looked at it for a couple of seconds and looked like she was about to shake her head in refusal.

Yet, noticing the attention she had drawn, she ultimately smiled at her son and took the pill.

“Thank you, Avery. I feel much better now. But we need to talk for a little while. Alone.”

Serena stressed the “alone” part. For most of those watching, they probably thought that Avery was about to get a scolding. That was the kind of energy that Serena had.

Except, her husband and son could tell that something else was up.

Avery’s mother was acting strange and her expression was harder and more sorrowful than normal.

There was still clear love in her eyes as she looked at them, but there was something different.

Her entire demeanor just seemed heavier.

‘Does she know something about this?’ Avery thought, still feeling the strong connection between the two them.

It was vastly different from what he had experienced with Nianni. There was no transfer of emotion or thoughts, just some sort of energy reaching out.

“Sure mom. Is there somewhere that we can go to be in private?”

Avery’s mother nodded and began leading the way. Leaving everyone else to Robert and Urs.

“I’ll be back in just a bit. You’ll be good without me, right?”

Avery wanted to make sure that Kasandra and Jasmine would be fine on their own, and both of them nodded their heads. Urging him to go with his mother.

Following behind her, they headed to the room where she and Avery’s father had been staying the last couple of days.

As soon as the door was closed, Avery’s mother stared at him with an intense look of rage and sadness.

He had no idea where this was coming from and took a step back because of the palpable aura around her.

“When did this happen? Who did this to you?” Serena asked, her voice laced with fury

Never before had Avery heard his mother sound so harsh. Her tone was almost murderous.

Thankfully he could tell that her ire was not directed at him, but at someone that his mother believed had harmed in some way. Though as far as he knew, there were no visible wounds on him, and she should not know what had recently occurred with the corrupt Alliance Police.

“Mom, I don’t know what you’re talking about. I’m perfectly fine. You and dad are the ones that went through something horrible recently. I really can’t express how sorry I am for brining such danger to the two of you.”

“Surely you must know. Don’t try and hide it. I can feel coming off of you just as you can from me.” Serena said as she grabbed ahold of Avery.

A slight red aura moved from her to him, and he started to be able to see the flow of energy around him again.

He had never been able to activate this strange ability on his own, but his mother just had somehow.

“This is what I’m talking about! Don’t try and hide it from me!” Serena said forcefully.

“Something has changed within you. You don’t know what it is and it must be very frightening. But whatever it is, it didn’t happen all of a sudden for no reason. There must have been a trigger. So, who was it and what did they do to you?”
