Chapter 390: Chapter 390 Unraveled Plans
Serena collapsed onto her knees after she finished dealing with the man that had attack her and her husband.
She was breathing heavily partially from the exertion of a power she had not used in nearly thirty years, but also the heavy burden of her returned memories.
For so long she had lived a relatively peaceful life. There had been hard times like when Robert had been crippled and nearly died, but even that seemed blissful compared to her past that should have vanished forever.
‘I won’t be able to put as strong of a seal up this time without the others’ help. It will only last a couple of weeks at most. But I’ll worry about something more permanent later once all of this is over.’ Serena thought, turning the energy erupting from her on herself.
It was painful to muddle her own memories and suppress her reawakened powers, but she worked through it and finished quickly. Anything to forget again and go back to normal.
Once the process was done, she collapsed onto the ground and fell unconscious. The strain on her body and mind was too great for her to remain awake.
…
Urs arrived to find a ghastly scene.
Both of Avery’s parents were knocked out on the floor, and not far away was a crushed pile of metal that was covered in blood.
Seeing as how the red liquid was still flowing out of the destroyed power armor, Urs concluded that whatever had happened to the person must have been recent.
‘What the f*ck happened here?’
Even during his entire career as a mercenary, Urs had never seen anything like this.
The only thing that he could possibly think of that would have caused something like this was if the individual was smashed by a giant hydraulic press.
Of course, there was nothing like that down in this part of the sewers.
They were in a tunnel that was mostly composed of industrial concrete that used rock waste from mined asteroids as the main component.
Perhaps somewhere under the water, there was a piece of equipment that could do damage like this to someone in power armor, but that still would not explain how this person got here or Robert’ and Serena’s conditions.
“The scanner isn’t picking up anyone or anything else. But just to be safe.”
Urs pulled out his laser cannon and set it to training setting and a wise spread.
He fired it five times and covered the entire area in red light.
Had there been anyone around hiding under active camouflage, this would have revealed them, but the tunnel was clear. There was not a single soul beside them around.
However, that was not going to last for long.
The team that was coming to meet with Rook’s now pulped adjutant would arrive soon. Though Urs did not know this, he was certain that sticking round would only lead to more trouble.
Hastily, and probably with bit less care than he should have, he threw Avery’s parents over both of his shoulders and began bounding deeper into the sewer. Mining for a different exit that he hoped would not be covered.
…
“Explain it to me so I can understand!” Clarien yelled furiously as a squad leader reported to him.
“I’m sorry sir. I’m just relaying what we’ve found.” The squad leader replied meekly.
From the start of the operation, things had not been going smoothly, but for a little while it had seemed that the targets would be retrieved successfully, and their protector dealt with.
Despite Clarine’s instructions to bring a team with him, Rook had ditched everyone else for being too slow and left them behind to catch up to him.
After that his partner had cut off his communications and did not listen or respond to a thing Clarien said.
This left him in the dark for a while, but he was already used to dealing with Rook’s occasional selfish endeavors.
When the man found a decent fighter to take on, he became almost obsessed with doing so and practically lost sight of everything else.
Still, not once had Rook failed to come out victorious, and the situations always seemed to end up resolved through his brute force alone.
So, Clarien had trusted in his partner to deal with Urs, and when he finally received a report from the man’s close adjutant who was the first to catch up, everything appeared to be going well.
Both of Avery’s parents had been located, and while Rook had still been locked in battle, Clarien had been assured that Rook would finish Urs soon and come out the victor.
Yet he had only received silence from the adjutant after the first report, and now the team that was supposed to meet him and help escort the targets had come across a scene vastly different from what Clarien had heard.
What had been found at the last recorded location of the man was a suit of power armor that had been reduced to a pile of scrap metal, and a pool of blood and viscera of the person that had been inside of it.
This was a surprise and enraged Clarien, but the news that reached him next was far more shocking to him.
Not too far from that location was where the battle between Rook and Urs had taken place.
The area was devastated as was expected, but that was unimportant so far as Clarien was concerned.
What he found to be distressing was the majority of Rook’s left arm that had been left behind and the large quality of clearly bahnen blood scattered around.
“Organize search parties to find Rook and locate the targets. I don’t care what it takes, get it done.”
Clarien cut off the call with the squad leader and furiously tried to contact Rook or at least track him.
Regrettably, his partner had turned off his comms device and had made sure that his location data was not being transmitted. From where he was sitting in the captain’s chair of his ship, there was nothing that Clarien could do but groan as everything spiraled out of his control.
