Chapter 389: Chapter 389 The Power Within Avery’s Mother
“W-what the… N-no… impossible.”

Unable to comprehend what was going on, Rook’s adjutant started sputtering and backing away from Serena.

His mind could not accept what he was seeing, but the fear gripping him was throwing his thoughts into chaos.

There were some species that were known to have certain special powers, like the Vensians that had the ability to psychically communicate with plants.

Except, as far as Rook’s adjutant knew, there were no known species that had powers like what Serena was demonstrating.

‘It’s got to be a trick. A holoprojector that she has hidden must be creating the red light around her, and there’s someone here in advanced stealth power armor better than mine that crushed my laser rifle.’

Coming up with this absurd scenario was the only way that the man could rationalize what was going on.

Of course, if there really was someone sneaking around in the shadows to protect Avery’s parents, it hardly would have made sense for them to stand by and watch until now. Also, if this imaginary person possessed a suit of power armor advanced as Rook’s adjutant imagined, they would have just killed him instead of crushing his weapon.

Still, since he was unable to accept the reality before him, the man wearing power armor acted as if what he believed was fact.

Hastily he jumped back and began zigzagging around.

Then he pulled out his laser pistol and began firing wildly in every direction to try and hit the enemy that he believed to be hidden by active camouflage.

Naturally, some of these blasts came flying towards Serena, but the lasers uncharacteristically bent around her and kept flying on their path once they had passed by.

This was the final straw that broke Rook’s adjutant.

Whether what he was seeing was some sort of trick or not, he knew he was powerless to stop what was going on.

Not even considering the consequences that would await him for failing his mission, the man turned around and began running away s fast as his legs could carry him.

With his power armor on, he could run far faster than a normal person and he was certain that he could get away.

Yet after just a couple of steps, his feet no longer found purchase on the ground.

Whips of red energy had surrounded him, and he was now somehow floating in the air.

Before he could wrap his mind around his new predicament, a searing pain shot through his right arm.

The laser pistol in his grasp fell from his hand as his forearm was crushed.

A howl of agony erupted from his mouth as it was not just his bones that had been broken, an entire section of his arm had just been flattened.

Blood began flowing out of the cracks in the area where his power armor had been crumpled along with his arm.

It was a ghastly injury, and the aberrant way in which it had occurred only worsened the man’s pain and terror.

He did not even have time to try and wrap his head around the attack though. As just a couple seconds later, his left ankle was twisted around one hundred eighty degrees.

There was an appalling snapping sound from the bone breaking, and a new wave of pain washed over the man. Causing him to cry out again.

Had he been able to form proper thoughts, Rook’s adjutant would have realized that these were the same injuries that he had given to Avery’s father. However, extreme distress he was experiencing did not allow him to consider this. He was too preoccupied with screaming his lungs out.

A few moments later, he felt another force on his body, and he was twisted around in midair so that he was facing Serena.

Now he could properly see her again.

His gaze was drawn to her eyes.

They had previously been a bright green color, something quite common for the average human.

Now though, they were burning a dark red and roiling with rage.

Throughout his entire life, the man being held aloft had never felt fear as powerful as what he felt now.

Even if he did not want to believe what he was seeing and could not comprehend the true severity of the situation. Deep down he knew that he had angered something that he never should have. Whatever Serena was, she was not human.

“I never wanted to wake up again. I was supposed to live out the rest of my life as just normal Serena Asteria. Everything was going perfectly. Yet you people had to come and ruin it.” Serena said, her voice far colder than it had ever been before.

There was rage but also anguish in her expression.

She glanced over at her husband lying on the ground for just a second.

He had fallen unconscious due to her first outburst, but that was probably for the best. That way he would not witness what Serena was about to do next.

There were tears forming in her eyes from the mess of emotions that she was experiencing.

She may have appeared mostly calm on the surface, but inside she was a mess.

A part of herself that she had locked away and never wanted to come back up had been forcefully awakened.

When she was watching Robert about to be killed, the power she had sealed away and forgotten about had forced its way back to the surface.

She had wished for some way to save her husband, and it had appeared.

But along with it came regret, and the memories that she had long cast away.

Nevertheless, in spite of the turmoil within her, there was one objective she was determined to complete.

“I’ll make sure that you regret ever having gotten involved with us even into your next life.”

Holding her hand out, Serena slowly closed her fingers into a fist.

As she did, the power suit the man was wearing began to collapse in on itself. Crushing his body that was trapped inside.
