Chapter 388: Chapter 388 (Spoiler, Title at the Bottom of the Chapter)
Serena was frozen in fear for a few seconds as she watched her husband being held up in the air and shoved against the wall of the sewer tunnel.

However, when she heard what the man hidden by active camouflage was saying, she knew that she had to do something.

‘I already killed one person today. I have to do this to protect both of us.’ Serena thought, steeling her resolve.

Though she was shaking, she pulled out the laser pistol that Urs had loaned her and fired at the space in front of her husband that may have looked empty, but there was undoubtedly someone there.

There was a bright flash from the muzzle of the gun, and the red light of the laser struck against the man restraining Robert.

Unfortunately, the stealth power armor he was wearing had tough enough plating to deflect the blow.

It did disable the camouflage and reveal the person wearing a set of pitch-black power armor, that in the current situation and location looked quite sinister.

Serena prepared to pull the trigger on her weapon again, but the man made a move before she could

“That was cute, but enough of that.”

With a swift slap he swatted away the pistol out of Serena’s hand, and as he brought his hand back, he backhanded her across the face.

The strength of his power armor had been restrained, yet the blow still sent Serena sprawling onto the ground.

A stream of blood started flowing out of her mouth from several cuts in her mouth as she coughed violently.

“Now come along without any more resistance and that will be the worst of it. I’d prefer if the two of you walked on your own feet, but I’ll drag you both back with me if necessary.” The man wearing stealth power armor said threateningly.

Under this same situation, most people would have complied, but Avery’s parents knew what was waiting for them if they did.

Even if they just ended up locked way in a cell and no further harm was done to them, their captors planned to use them as captives to control their son.

There was no telling what they would do to him then, and both Serena and Robert had made peace with dying if it meant protecting their only child.

“Go… to… hell!”

Choking out the words as his throat was being restricted, Robert raised up his own gun and jammed it directly into the visor of the man holding him up.

Seeing how frightened they were and knowing that Avery’s parents were just average citizens, the man that was one of Rook’s adjutants had not expected them to fight back so desperately.

The reinforced glass cracked from the point-blank shot, and the man’s eyes were blinded from the sudden flash filling his helmet.

He had not been particularly injured by the attack, but his eyes were stinging from the unexpected exposer to a bright light.

“Argh!”

The man howled in pain and rage and tossed Robert aside as he instinctually brought his hands up to his face to rub his eyes. Though, he was unable to do so thanks to the power armor he was wearing.

When he hit the ground, Robert grunted and felt a searing shock run up his right leg.

The rough treatment had broken one of his ankles.

Nevertheless, he had experienced a lot worse during his time after the accident that had crippled him.

Fighting through the pain, he pulled himself up and started rapidly firing with his laser pistol.

More shots connected with he man, but his power armor kept him safe as the blast bounced off of him.

To prevent himself from taking another hit to his armor’s visor, he placed his left arm in front of his face.

Had Robert been in a clearer state of mind, and a better shot, he could have focused his fire on one spot and broken through, but regrettably all of his attacks connected with different areas.

Moving too fast for normal people like Robert and Serena to react, Rook’s adjutant rushed forward and kicked the gun out of Robert’s hand.

He then slammed his foot down on his arm, crushing Robert’s arm.

Before Avery’s father could yell out in pain, the barrel of a gun was shoved into his mouth.

“You should have come peacefully like I asked. We only really need one hostage anyway, so I’ll just tell the bosses that an accident happened, and you got caught in some crossfire. I bet the kid likes his mother more anyway.”

Although neither of Avery’s parents could see it, under his helmet the man was wearing a vicious smile.

Robert defending himself had enraged the man, and despite the mission to retrieve them both alive, he had let his anger take over.

Unable to stand by and watch this happen, Serena threw herself at the guy despite the power armor he was wearing.

Of course, she only possessed the strength of an average human, and even though she put her full weight into the charge, she was unable to make him move a centimeter.

“Just sit back down and wait. I’ll deal with you in a moment.” The man said as he shoved Serena to the ground.

With the distraction out of the way now, he turned his attention back towards Avery’s father.

The fear in Robert’s eyes and the distress on his face only made him elated. Other than the money, it was the freedom to due things like this that had drawn him to work for Rook and Clarien.

“It looks like you’re the one that’s going to hell first.”

Pulling down on the trigger of his weapon, the man expected to watch a large hole be blasted in Robert’s head.

Except, the shot never came out of the laser rifle.

At the same moment that he had pressed the trigger, the barrel of the gun crumpled like foil and folded in on itself.

This was completely inexplicable. Solid weapons did not just get crushed out of nowhere.

Yet, the source of the unnatural event was apparent.

When he turned to look at Serena, he saw what could be described as a shimmering red aura around her.
