Chapter 385: Chapter 385 Urs Vs Rook (4)
While Urs had been pressing the offensive against Rook to prevent the man from launching any solid attacks, eventually he skipped up ever so slightly.
Yet this was enough for Rook to knock Urs off balance for a moment and lunge in to deliver a heavy blow.
Unlike his usual heavy swings, he had switched things up and was jabbing towards Urs with the head of his club.
Knowing he could not avoid this hit, Urs moved his shield in front of himself to deflect the blow.
He did his best to turn himself at an angle, but the impact still felt like he had just been hit by a train car.
Several times he rolled along the ground and it took him a couple of seconds to regain his bearings and pull himself upright.
Fortunately, he had been able to stab his hard light sword into the ground and used it to slow himself down. Having left a large gash in the concrete that his blade had sliced through.
‘My left arm is broken. I managed to block it, but the force was greater than I expected. It wasn’t even one of his fully wound-up swings and it did this much damage to me. Fighting him is more like dealing with a giant beast than another person. Except he doesn’t fight only on instinct and leaves openings to exploit. I thought he was like a berserker from what I saw of him going against the Alliance Police, but his defense is solid and methodical.’ Urs thought as he forced his wobbling legs to stand back up.
From within his mouth he moved his tongue over to one of his back molars which was actually a false tooth.
Once he had dislodged it, he crushed it with his other teeth and swallowed the contents.
This was an emergency supply of nano machine medicine he always kept at the ready. Though he had needed to use this trick in over a decade.
Feeling the pain in his body starting to ease and his injuries being fixed, Urs was ready just in time to respond to Rook’s charge.
The two had been staring each other down for a second, but Rook was not going to give Urs long to recover.
With only a few meters between them, Urs ripped a plasma grenade off his belt and dropped it in front of him.
This was a highly risky move, and it caught Rook’s attention immediately.
Killing his momentum, the giant of a man leapt backwards hastily and smashed his club into the ground to send a spray of rubble flying towards the grenade and Urs.
Cleary, he had practiced this maneuver a number of times by how reflexively he had reacted.
Fortunately, this was what Urs wanted.
He jumped out of the way of the rubble and began running to the side to circle around Rook and make sure to put himself between his enemy and where Serena and Robert were hiding. His opponent did not seem interested in going after them at the moment, but just the threat was unnerving and a weakness that could be exploited.
For Rook’s part, he had been waiting for the plasma grenade to go off, but it never did. Urs had thrown it down, but without arming it. The maneuver had merely been a bluff to force his adversary back and give him some more room to move and time to recover.
“You really are full of tricks. But for all of your earlier bravado, you haven’t delivered yet. I was expecting this to be a bit more exciting.”
Urs internally scoffed. He did not care about serving as entertainment for Rook. His only goal was to bring the man down. Something that was proving tough to accomplish.
If he was still at his prime, Urs figured that he would be more or less evenly matched with Rook, but retirement had softened him up a bit.
‘My chances of beating him straight up are probably only around thirty percent if I’m being generous. I need something else to turn things around.’ Urs thought, racking his mind and scanning the environment for something he could use.
While Rook was lumbering towards him to start the fight up again, something gleaming several meters away caught Urs’ eye.
He then glanced down at his hard light sword and looked over towards the plasma grenade that he had dropped.
Finally, a plan towards victory began forming in his mind. Now all he needed to do was execute it.
Exhaling deeply, he rushed towards Rook and attacked more ferociously than he had so far.
Pushing his body to its limit, he dashed around while swinging his sword and using his shield to intercept any attacks Rook threw out before he could build up his full force.
Urs started to look like a whirlwind of light as he hammered away at Rook, not giving his opponent any room to counterattack.
Except, fighting this hard was draining and despite his efforts, Urs was not able to break past Rook’s fortress like defense.
He landed a few glancing blows that left slight cuts in the man’s armor and skin, but nothing substantial.
There were times when Urs noticed openings that seemed like they would allow him to deliver a decisive blow, but his instincts told him that these were traps. As much as Rook tried to make it seem like he had been forced into such a position by Urs’ attacks, the veteran mercenary did not take the bait.
His strategy was already set, and it did not involve any lucky “cracks” in Rook’s defenses.
‘I’ve almost got him there. Now.’
Taking a step back, Urs pressed a button on the terminal strapped to his forearm and remotely detonated the plasma grenade he had dropped earlier.
Obviously, Rook had been keeping an eye on the dangerous weapon still sitting there and avoided getting within range of it.
Still, when it went off, it distracted him for a moment. Enough for Urs to move away and reach the place he had been aiming for.
