Chapter 381: Chapter 381 Urs’ Extensive Bag of Tricks
Watching the blast coming his way, Urs swiftly dodged to the side just a moment before a burst of force flew past him.
There was a loud crashing sound an instant later as the shockwave slammed into the wall of the sewer.
Pieces of concrete and a plume of dust sprayed into the air from the impact. Pelting Urs from behind with bits of debris and covering the area in a slight haze.
Realizing that his plasma launcher was not going to be effective at this range, Urs shouldered it and grabbed his laser rifle and laser cannon instead.
At the same time, Rook grabbed a giant gatling gun from his back that he wielded in just one hand. An impressive feat considering the size of his weapon.
Even as strong as he was, Urs knew he would not be able to wield such a weapon one-handed.
The two of them began blasting away at each other while darting around.
Normally Urs wanted to close the distance with his opponents since he was confident in his strength and skills in a brawl.
Against Rook though, he wanted to stay as far away as possible.
This was the rare opponent that had greater physical strength than him and was a specialist when it came to fighting at close range.
Unfortunately, what Rook lacked in skills with ranged weaponry, he made up for with the sheer rate of fire of his laser gatling gun.
It was shooting a stream of blasts all over the place at a speed where Urs found it difficult to avoid.
His personal shield generator was taking a beating already, and he thought it was likely that his would give out first before Rook’s did, or at best they would both go down around the same time.
‘I’m already backed against a wall, and the only place for me to go is back down the path where Robert and Serena are hiding. Running won’t help since neither of them will be able to outpace a physically enhanced bahnen like Rook. I have to win this fight. Even if it means taking a few risks.’
Urs dropped his laser rifle and quickly pulled out his hard light shield.
He had been hoping to save on its power, but he needed it to defend himself right now.
Seeing this, Rook changed his own tactics.
Instead of counting the firefight between them, he began rushing in head-on.
To defend himself he held his high-density metal club in front of his torso while still blasting away with his laser gatling gun.
With Urs now only using one weapon, he figured he could just tank the attacks and get into melee combat where he wanted to be.
Of course, Urs had expected this, and when his opponent was at the range that he wanted, he let go of his laser cannon and grabbed a laser grenade from one of the pouches attached to his belt.
Immediately he leapt back a couple of meters until he had pressed himself up against the wall behind him.
Having nowhere else to go, he braced his hard light shield in front of him as a bright flash of red engulfed the area.
When the blast had cleared, Urs could feel that his ears had gotten slightly burned, but otherwise he had gotten out uninjured.
As for Rook, he was completely out of view. Instead, a giant slab of concrete seemed to have suddenly risen up from the ground.
“That was a close one. But this isn’t the first time I’ve had to deal with an attack like that.” Rook said as he pushed the chunk of concrete he had broken off and used as a barrier back into place.
Urs had already used a similar trick earlier, so he was not too surprised by what Rook had pulled off.
This was a man that knew how to fight and use his monstrous strength to its full advantage.
The terrain of a battlefield meant little to him. In most places he could use his power to shape the area how he wanted.
“Yes, I’m sure that you’re experience in battle might even exceed my own. But I wonder if you’ve ever dealt with anything like this before.”
For Urs, the laser grenade had always just been meant to be a distraction. Had it taken Rook out or caused him severe wounds, he would have been ecstatic, but he had not been counting on it doing much damage.
Just a second after he had lobbed the grenade, Urs had grabbed the bag on his back that he had retrieved from his safe house. The one filled with items that looked like ball bearings.
Once the intensity of the blast had died down, he had begun dumping out the container, and the last one had dropped tot eh floor just a moment ago.
“You’re right, I’ve never had anyone try something like this.” Rook laughed as he glanced down at the metal sphere. “I didn’t know that anyone would attempt something so juvenile in this day and age. If you were hoping that these would cause me to lose my footing or slow me down, you’re going to be disappointed. I can easily crush them flat under my feet.
To demonstrate, Rook lifted his leg up to smash the ones around him, but that was the moment that Urs activated them.
Instead of reaming inert on the ground, they all swiftly rose up into the air about a meter and a half and stayed there.
Slightly visible bands of electricity connected each of them, and they spread out through the area until they were equal distance apart.
“You really shouldn’t have judged them by their appearance. These things are so much more than what they appear to be.”
Seeing the metal balls now hovering around him, Rook now wore a serious expression as he tried to figure out what they were.
He was familiar with most types of weapons, but he had never seen anything like these. Which was why he had not been on guard when Urs had first deployed them. Even if they had been filled with explosives, the yield of each one would have been low due to their size.
Also, they were still surrounding Urs as well, so he had not expected them to be much more than what they appeared to be.
However, now that the unusual devices that he could not recall any information on had surrounded him, Rook took on a more cautious approach as he analyzed them.
Normally information would have come in from Clarien, but he had turned off his comms so that he could enjoy this fight. Had his partner seen what was going on, he would have told Rook to wait for backup so that their victory would be more assured.
Nevertheless, Rook was not completely incapable of using his brain. He may have been more brawn than intellect, but he was still able to carefully analyze a situation. Especially in the midst of a fight.
‘There is barely enough room between each of them for me. Even just a half a centimeter in any direction and I’ll bump into one. They must be meant to restrict my movements, but I’m unsure how. But I suppose that doesn’t matter, I’ll just get rid of them.’
Concluding that the best option was brute force, Rook raised his club up high and prepared to strike down with immense strength.
If he did not know what was in his way, he found that often the best option was just to break through.
Except, the instant he moved his weapon up high, Urs started moving again.
Carefully he weaved through the gaps that were just large enough for him to pass through.
He had purposefully set them to maintain a certain distance from each other so that he had enough room to barely maneuver, while Rook did not.
When he had gotten a bit further away, he wielded his laser rifle again and fired right before Rook could bring his club down.
Expertly he hit one of the floating metal spheres, but the laser did not cause any damage to it. Instead, it was dispersed and shot off in multiple directions in smaller beams.
This was thanks to the laser resistant coating on the outside of each of the balls and made for a stunning visual.
It was inconsequential in the current moment though, as all Urs wanted was to ever so slightly push the device forward.
Once it came into contact with physical matter, in this instant that being Rook, it discharged.
The sphere broke apart, scattering shrapnel and an electrical charge.
While the power behind it was not particularly great, it was still enough to stun even someone as large as Rook for a fraction of a second. All the time that Urs needed to aim at his opponent with his laser cannon that he had just grabbed and fired off a full intensity.
