Chapter 378: Chapter 378 More Weapons and a Harrowing Enemy
After Urs had finished explaining what their next course of action would be depending on how their enemies moved, he left Robert and Serena to continue resting while he picked through the weapons he had stored here.
‘I’d almost f orgotten that I have some of this stuff. There aren’t any upgrades to my laser weaponry, but this one could be useful.’
From off one of the weapon mounts handing on the wall in the room, Urs grabbed a large vaguely gun shaped device.
It had a handle and a trigger like most similar weaponry, but its body was mostly cylindrical. Starting out a bit thinner at the back and growing wider towards the front where there was a large opening.
Once he had checked that the weapon was still in perfect working order, since it was too dangerous to use if it was even slightly off, he opened a cabinet below where it was stored and pulled out its ammunition.
‘The seal is still intact and the contents haven’t degraded. I’m glad I splurged for the top end stuff that lasts for a long time and retains its potency.’ Urs thought as he checked over the canisters.
When he was satisfied that his plasma launcher was still fully functional, he pressed a button that opened up a compartment in the back of the weapon and slotted in one of the canisters containing the currently dormant plasma.
This was not the type of weapon one normally wanted to use on a station due to the risk of accidently burning a hole through to the outside, but Urs was confident that they were far enough away from any areas close to the exterior and he felt like the advantage it would give him was to great to pass up on.
He also grabbed another electromagnetic pulse grenade to replace the one he already used.
This one was not quite as potent since it was just a standard model, but it would still prove useful in the right situation.
After that, he attached a shoulder mounted micro missile launcher to his left shoulder. It was a bit clunky and would slow him down a little. Still, he felt like having a few easily deployed explosive attacks at his disposal might come in handy.
‘Let’s see. Is there anything else here that might be useful. Not that. Those won’t help. Ah, these should be interesting.’
While digging through the cache of weapons he had stored in his safe house, Urs located a bag that held a container that was filled with small metallic spheres that resembled ball bearings.
They were not a particularly common piece of equipment, and most would not even consider using them.
For the current situation that Urs found himself in though, they were perfect.
Now that Urs had collected a few more items, he felt satisfied that he was as ready as he could be.
There were some other weapons that he would like to have, but they were a bit too big to be carrying around while on the run.
With the extra armaments he had just collected, he already looked over encumbered. He had two large bags over his back, a laser rifle, laser cannon, and now a plasma launcher to serve as primary weapons. Along with his hard light shield and weapon strapped to his belt, with several other pouches containing one use items like grenades and nano machine recover capsules.
It was the most gear that he had carried on his person in a long time, and even with his strength, the weight of it all would slow him down somewhat.
‘I should still be faster than either of them at least. So, it’s not a problem.’ Urs thought as he walked back into the room Serena and Robert were in.
“That’s a lot of stuff. Are you sure that you’ll be fine carrying it all? I can take a few things if you need me to.”
Robert eyed the pile of items that Urs had set down next to himself and wondered if it might not be too much for one person to lug around.
“The offer is appreciated, but I need to be able to access everything at a moments notice. That won’t be possible if you’re holding onto anything. There’s no telling what we’ll encounter, so I have to be ready for any situation.” Urs said, patting his small mountain of equipment in a show of confidence.
After that interaction, the three of them mostly waited in silence, with only very brief conversations between them while they monitored what was going on outside.
From the cameras that Urs had set up, they could see hundreds of people rushing around the alleys searching for them.
There were also the periodic sounds of intense fighting in the distance, and a couple of times they caught flashes of the assailants targeting Avery’s partners clashing with the Alliance Police.
It was all quite frightening for Sereana and Robert to witness, as they had never seen a conflict like this one before. With what were two easily small armies fighting it out in a deadly battle
Some of the views of the cameras just showed dead bodies strewn across the streets. Honestly it was sickening, but they had to keep watching to monitor what was going on. It was necessary for their own safety.
“I thought that the police’s response to all of this was a bit too tepid.” Urs eventually said.
While Robert and Serena had no context for what an adequate response to this sort of incursion was, Urs did.
The Alliance Police had mobilized a decent force, but it was far from sufficient to take down the group that had infiltrated the station. Only just enough to slow them down.
However, Urs had just found the reason for this from checking the station’s mercenary network.
Along with the attack inside, a small fleet of ships had appeared and were assaulting the station. This required most of the remaining Alliance Police and even the mercenaries staying out of the battle with the priates to intervene. If they did not, there was a good chance that the station in its entirety could be destroyed.
“They haven’t been able to find this place yet at leas-”
As Urs was speaking, he suddenly went quiet when one of the cameras picked up the form of a hulking individual.
Displayed in front of the three of them was a giant bahnen larger than any of them had ever seen.
Even Urs, who was half bahnen and had lived on their home world for a couple of years during his early life, had never encountered a member of his paternal species of this size.
“It can’t be.” Urs said, his eyes going wide and a clear hostility in his voice.
Naturally Robert and Serena picked up on this. That Urs was familiar with this person.
“Do you know him?” Serena asked.
For a couple of moments, Urs did not respond, simply glaring at the display.
“Not personally, but I know of him. His name is Rook Valtaus. Around half a century ago he was a powerful warlord on the bahnen home world. His greed and battle lust knew no bounds, and he nearly brought the planet to ruin with his ceaseless wars. Eventually a coalition of the planet’s strongest clans came together to drive him back, and it was said that he was defeated and believed to be dead. I guess that he must have escaped his demise somehow.”
Urs had not put together that one of the two leaders of the criminal group that held a deep grudge against Avery was such an infamous figure.
Rook was not an uncommon name among the bahnen people, so he had not made the connection. Especially considering that the man was supposed to be dead.
Learning that the people he had interrogated were the subordinates of a giant bahnen had not served as a solid clue either.
Even the smallest bahnens were as big as the largest humans and most other species, so them calling a bahnen large was hardly a means of differentiating between them.
Except now Urs knew what they meant. The behemoth of a man tearing through the Alliance Police was among the tallest and strongest bahnens ever recorded in history. A true giant even among their species.
“This is not good. I don’t know if I could beat him.” Urs said, looking nervous for the first time.
Obviously, his reaction came as a shock to Robert and Serena. Up until this point, Urs had always seemed like he was nearly invincible. Someone that even a small army could not stop.
Yet, as they too watched the horrifying scene of Rook rampaging through the streets, crushing armored Alliance Police vehicles with the giant club he swung around, they could understand his anxiety.
Soon, Urs managed to recover though. He wiped the worry from his face and put on a resolute expression.
“Our goal isn’t to fight and win any way. I just need to keep the two of you safe long enough for the people after you to be chased off. We still haven’t been discovered, so there’s no need to be concerned. Our plans are still the same. As long as we can stay here, we do. If we are found, we’ve got somewhere else to head to.” Urs said, sounding almost like he was trying to convince himself as much as Avery’s parents.
However, as bad as the battle was going for the Alliance Police, they were still safe for the time being. For now, all the three of them could do was wait and watch. Ready to respond to how the situation developed.
