Chapter 375: Chapter 375 Urs’ Safehouse and Intensifying Battle
Despite the fear clawing at him as enemies closed in from multiple directions, Robert grabbed his wife’s hand and went running down the alley as Urs had directed.
The paths were all starting to blend together and look the same, but he carefully took the first left and then ran down to the second right along the alleyway after running for a couple hundred meters.
From there Robert kept a close eye out for the opening in the left-hand wall that Urs had told them to go into.
He still was not completely sure of what the objective was here, but Urs had kept them safe and alive so far, and there was no reason to doubt him.
‘If he hadn’t gotten involved, we would have gone on with our lives unaware of what was going on until it was too late. It really is hard to believe that a criminal organization for this scale is after us just because of our son.’ Robert thought as he continued to push his tired body forward.
At this point he was nearly fully recovered, but having been stuck in a wheelchair for so long and hardly being able to move at all had left his muscles worse for wear.
He had been consistently working to regain his strength, though he was still a bit thin and out of shape compared to his condition before the accident that had nearly killed him.
Still, even as his lungs burned and his muscles felt like they were screaming out in agony, he never stopped running. The hand of his wife he was gripping more giving him the strength to keep moving rather than the other way around.
The entire time they were moving, Robert was worried that an enemy would pop up in front of them and prevent them from going forward.
While he and Serena had been loaned laser pistols from Urs, neither of them had ever used any type of weapon before today.
So, if a fight did break out, Robert was not confident in their chances no matter how hard they struggled.
Of course, with his mind on the possibility of a battle without Urs with them, his thoughts soon drifted towards what Serena had done during their earlier scuffle.
She had killed someone for the first time, and since then she had not said a word.
Her hand felt cold in Robert’s grip, and he could tell her pale expression had more to do than just the exhaustion of running.
‘I’m sure that she’ll be fine with time. She’s always been tough. A lot more so than me.’ Robert thought, his lips turning up into a self-deprecating smile.
After what felt like an eternity, Robert felt Serena pull on his arm.
He had been so lost in thought that he had nearly run past an out of place opening in the left wall.
They had come about six hundred meters since turning onto the path, and to their side was what looked like a black void the size of a standard door simply appearing in the middle of a wall.
“Sorry, I must not have been paying enough attention. Thank you for stopping me, honey.”
Serena looked like she was about to say something but just nodded her head instead. As if the words had gotten caught in her throat.
When they walked inside the opening, for just a moment their vision was completely swallowed up by blackness. Like they had just passed through a portal into some strange dimension rather than going into a building.
Fortunately, their vision soon returned to them as they entered a small room that was illuminated by a lighting strip that went all the way around the ceiling.
‘Urs must have set up a shield generator at the entrance that’s only collaborated to block out light. That’s the only thing that I can think of to create that oppressive darkening effect.’ Robert thought, believing he understood how Urs had pulled off the trick.
He did not have long to be amazed though, as there was another door that had opened between two corners of the small room.
They had been instructed to head as deep inside as possible, so Robert led the way with Serena trailing behind him.
The two of them passed through another few small junctions that felt like a maze, before finally reaching what seemed to be the end.
“I wonder when Urs had the time to prepare a place like this, and why?”
Robert’s question did not receive an answer, but that was too be expected.
The only other person with him was his wife, and she was just as shocked and curious as he was.
Together they looked around the area, finding that it had some decent furnishings, enough food capsules to last for a year and a decent autochef to prepare them, and a stockpile of weapons and equipment displayed on one of the walls.
There were actually a few more doors in the place aside from the one that they had entered through, but they were all sealed. This likely meant that this was as far as Urs intended for them to go.
“W-what should we do now?” Serena asked, speaking up for the first time in a while.
Robert thought deeply about this for a few moments but was unable to come up with anything.
There were some advanced looking weapons they could grab, though it was doubtful that they could use any of them. Most likely they were biometrically secured and would only work for Urs.
“It makes me feel helpless, but all we can do is stay here and wait for Urs. Ah, how about I make us something to eat. That should help calm us down a bit and replenish our energy.”
Serena was about to say that she did not have much of an appetite when her stomach growled in protest.
They had been running around for a while now, and the immense stress of the situation had caused them to use up a great deal of energy.
“Fine. Just a little bit. Something sweet if you can”
Giving his wife a smile, Robert went in search of something that would meet her request. Hoping to ease their burden just a little with some food that would serve as a good distraction.
…
Once Robert and Serena had vanished from his sight, Urs waited for just a few seconds for the first wave of enemies to come rushing into the alleyway.
When they saw him standing there, the hostility that they were radiating seemed to double.
‘I guess I probably sent plenty of the acquaintances and possibly friends straight into Alliance Police custody. They must be pretty mad at me to send me such intense death glares.’ Urs thought, not daunted in the slightest despite the hostility being sent his way.
For his opening, he fired off his laser cannon at full force.
A destructive blast followed an instant later, and not only the people he had aimed at but the buildings and roads were damaged.
At this point though, as long as he avoided causing any collateral casualties, he was fine with doing some damage to buildings or infrastructure.
Their very public fight in the middle of the streets just a little bit ago had doubtlessly alerted the Alliance Police already, and he was more than happy enough to make the situation seem even more urgent to them.
It might have been a bit cruel to get them involved in another major problem while a crisis was going on outside, but Urs was willing to just about anything to accomplish his goal.
If that meant the sacrifice of some of the Alliance Police officers while they were upholding their duty to protect the colony, then so be it.
“Looks like I seriously pissed them off.”
After blasting away the first group that tried to charge into the alley, Urs’ scanner picked up multiple projectiles heading his way.
His opponents had made the wise decision not to run into an obvious chokepoint again and had just fired a round of micro missiles into the air that were now arcing down towards the alley where Urs was.
This was certainly a very aggressive move, and one Urs thought was foolhardy considering what these people’s goal was.
While they had not seen Robert or Serena with him, the two of them could have still been nearby and hiding. If they got caught up in the explosions caused by the micro missiles, there was a very good chance that they would die.
‘No time to think about what ifs though.’
Instantly Urs began moving to mitigate the risk of the incoming strike.
He had already planned the route that he would run ahead of time and started heading in that direction.
Now that he was alone, he was able to utilize the full speed of his augmented body without having to worry about leaving Robert and Serena behind.
Quickly he dashed through the alley way to clear the blast radius of the missiles coming down on him.
Naturally, he was not fast enough even at his full speed to fully get away from the barrage, but with expert marksmanship he shot down the closest ones with his laser rifle.
There were a few explosions in the air that resounded through the area, followed by several more impacts in the alley just a moment later.
One would normally expect their target to have been obliterated after such an attack, but Urs was not the average opponent, so several teams following Clarien and Rooks orders flooded into the back alleys from multiple directions to search out where Urs was. Hoping to find the man either already dead, or severely injured.
