Chapter 373: Chapter 373 Run, Hide, Attack
Now that the window was no longer blocking their way, Urs pulled out a what looked like some sort of thick metallic tube.
He then held it out of the window and pushed a button in the center of the device.
“Whoa, what is that thing?”
Robert was surprised as he watched the tube suddenly extend in both directions. With the top pushing into the slight eave above the window, and the bottom going all the way to the ground.
Once it was in the desired location, the piece of equipment spun around one time to solidly affix itself to its two anchor points.
“Okay, it should be stable now. Just grab on and don’t let go. This will bring you down to the ground safely. Robert, you go first, and Serena, go after him immediately. I’ll keep watch from here and cover for both of you.” Urs said, grabbing the laser rifle that had been hung over his shoulder while keeping an eye on the feeds of the surveillance bots he had scattered around the area.
Doing as they were told. Robert grabbed a hold of the pole Urs had set up and exited out of the window.
He felt cold feeling in his gut as he dangled four floors above the ground, but he did not panic and kept a tight grip on the pole.
A second after he had grabbed on, it started moving on its own. Bringing him down at a fast but controllable speed before slowing down right before reaching the bottom.
Serena followed right after him, and after checking to make sure that everything was clear, Urs did as well.
When he reached the bottom instead of retrieving the item as Robert and Serena expected, he aimed his laser rifle and shot it at the top and bottom. Causing it to lose its support and fall over.
Naturally, he already knew that Robert and Serena were baffled by what he had just done and answered their questions before they could even ask them.
“The team sent in to sweep the building for you two is on the third floor right now and moving fast. It would have taken too much time to retrieve it, so I destroyed it instead. Now they won’t be able to follow us as easily. Let’s go. I’ve got a safehouse prepared for situations like these.” Urs said, urging Avery’s parents to keep moving.
Hastily, the ducked through alleyways as Urs directed them.
They had a slight head start, but it did not take long for the people after them to figure out that their targets had escaped the building.
“Robert, you’ve still got your terminal on you, right?”
“Uh, y-yeah, I do. But why does that matter? Are they going to be able to use it to track us somehow?” Robert responded, a look of alarm forming on his face.
“It’s a possibility, but I don’t think its likely. What I really want is for you to call the Alliance Police now.”
“Huh? But I thought that you said that wouldn’t do us any good right now because of the chaos from the pirate attack.” Serena interjected, understandably confused by Urs’ change in opinion.
“And that’s still true. We’re not going to get their help directly. We just want to throw off our pursuers and put a few obstacles in their way.”
Urs explained his plan to both Robert and Serena even as they moved, telling them what to say to get the best results out of the Alliance Police.
While the two of them focused on that, Urs, kept a careful eye on the surveillance network he had set up in advance.
He had installed several micro cameras throughout the area in places they were unlikely to be discovered.
What he had done certainly broke a couple of laws against illegal surveillance, but these were not the times to be worrying about some minor infraction that likely would not ever be found out.
“Looks like their plan has backfired on them a bit. The pirate incursion may have allowed them to sneak their forces onto the station, but it’s much easier to spot them with the streets mostly cleared. Not many civilians are going to be hanging around right now during an emergency.”
While they were trying to look natural, Urs had a keen enough eye to pick out people that were clearly out of place.
They were walking too slowly for the current situation, their heads were swiveling around too often, which served as obvious sign that they were looking for something, and it was plain to see them seemingly talking to themselves more often than was normal. A clear sign that they were using a communication device to speak to someone else.
“I knew that there were several thousands of them in total from the people I interrogated, but they certainly deployed a great deal of manpower. They’ve got multiple people all of the main streets in the area, and there are even teams sweeping the alleys now. When this is all over, I’m going to need to teach Avery how to avoid creating grudges against him.”
Of course, Urs understood that this was not his pupil’s fault.
Sometimes it was impossible to fully clean up a group that was antagonistic towards you. No doubt if Avery had thought it feasible, he would have crushed these people that were now after his parents before they became a problem.
“Okay, we’ve finished making the call. What do we do now?” Robert asked.
They had stopped momentarily since the initial path Urs had planned out was now being blocked by one of the roaming teams searching for them.
He was currently working on an alternative, but the difference in numbers was playing a major role in slowing them down.
“Hand your terminal over to me. We need to get rid of it.” Urs said holding out his right hand
“I thought you said that we didn’t need to worry about them using it to track us?” Robert said, obviously reluctant to allow a device he used every day to be destroyed.
“Yes, they probably can’t, but the police certainly can. There is a possibility that they may decide to track the location of the call they just received. That could cause us some real problems. Either they’ll give away our location while searching for us, or we’ll be slowed down when an officer comes to confront us.”
After hearing Urs’ explanation, Robert handed over his terminal to Urs.
He winced a little when he watched it get crushed since the device was quite valuable and it contained a great deal of his life on it.
Still, he realized that this was for the best. A terminal could be replaced, but his life could not be.
“Come on. I’ve picked out a place for us to wait at for a little bit. Hopefully the people in our way will move on in a little bit and we can slip past them.”
Unfortunately, even after hiding out in the back doorway of a shop for a couple of minutes, the situation had not improved. In fact, it had gotten worse.
Their enemy was now more certain that they were using the alleyways between buildings and had diverted some of the resources watching the main streets to search for them more thoroughly.
Seeing that they were not going to get by unnoticed, Urs instead focused on finding the best path to break through.
“I’ve got it. Follow very closely behind me, and if you think you have an opportunity to strike, don’t hold back. These people are the types to do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals. If they get ahold of one of you, they’ll subject you to horrors that you probably can’t even imagine. So don’t hesitate, because they certainly won’t.” Urs said, his tone of voice deadly serious.
Swiftly but carefully, they dashed through the back alleys, occasionally having to stop and wait, or change course whenever a group searching for them got close by.
Eventually, though, Urs led them towards an intersection that would bring them to a path that would take them onto a main street that they needed to pass through.
There, a group of five individuals were skulking around and keeping watch.
They were the ones that Urs had been hoping would move, but no doubt whoever was commanding them realized that this was a good chokepoint to keep a team positioned at.
Anyone going through the alleys in this direction would eventually have to pass through here or take a long detour.
“They haven’t found us yet since I’ve got a device blocking their scanners. But the moment I make a move, they’re going to notice us. Your safety is the most important thing but be ready to fight back if it becomes necessary.”
With that last warning, Urs took a deep breath to steel himself, and then dashed out into the open with a laser rifle in one hand, and a laser cannon in the other.
