Chapter 138: The Pit
“It’s time for you to learn new skills. As a Quad summoner, you are the true monster, but summons remain the source of your power, and that is why you need to learn Mastery. It’s a skill that allows your body and mind to adapt to the experience and traits of your summons.”

Arian said as they left the plant and entered the truck. “You won’t need much time to master the sword or horse riding or the bow. You’ll be a master, like your summons, but the skill can cause some adjustments to your body.”

Arian chuckled, flexing his perfect build subtly as he drove out of the plant.

***

In the evening, Godfrey stood at the doorstep of his new home. He had neighbors and all; the street and houses had a warm feel, but so much had happened today that all he sought was his mother’s smile.

Isolde’s too… if they weren’t on different sides of the world now. He knew she wouldn’t fight him.

The moment he opened the door to the sitting room, his eyes locked on Victoria sitting in the room with his mother. She looked a little pale, but he ignored that as the excitement of seeing her overwhelmed him.

“You’re out!” Godfrey exclaimed.

“I am.” Victoria smiled softly.

“Tsk! Wherever you were must have been an unpleasant place. You act quite soft now.” Godfrey said with a low chuckle.

“Go change up, young man!” Valentina ordered, pointing in the direction of his room.

As Godfrey left, Valentina’s smile vanished.

“Will you tell him?” she asked Victoria, who lowered her head.

“Godfrey’s gone through a lot. I heard he had to meet the rulers of this place because of me. If he knew that I’ve lost my summon, it might break him.”

‘What?!’

Godfrey, who was behind the door about to open it, froze. He was just returning to ask Victoria to unleash her summon, he had never seen it before, only to hear this.

His eyes slowly widened as he heard her explain how another consciousness was trying to force its way into her soul space through her summon, so she cut their bond, directly expelling a part of her into the unknown zone.

“I’ve been trained by the Authority since I was little, but I’ve never seen this desperate side of them. They want White, and they’re willing to break protocols for it.”

Victoria’s voice echoed inside Godfrey.

He boiled. Rage screamed for an outlet, wrecking his mind. His body trembled, but Godfrey contained it and sat on his bed.

Contained?

He thought he did. But his “soft” tapping of his foot on the floor caused a quaking of the entire building, and the other two beside it.

Cracks spread out and kept spreading until a loud, concerned voice tore into his mind.

“Godfrey! What is wrong?!”

Godfrey turned to his mother, who was at the door. She knew he heard. The emotions in his eyes said it all.

“What was your summon’s name?” Godfrey asked Victoria with a hoarse voice.

Victoria leaned her head against the doorframe. “Diana.”

That night, he carved it into the wall.

***

The next morning, a door opened, and Godfrey descended the five stairs into a rectangular hall. Four members of the six Elite Class were seated, and after them, a throne where Arian sat.

Isshin, the blue-skinned Oni Ronin, stood behind Arian. Upon seeing Godfrey enter the hall so suddenly, everyone turned to him.

“You’re early.” Arden smiled. Godfrey recognized her and Dax. Of the other four, there was another young-looking woman with white curly hair and attractive bright pink eyes.

Another wore a large gray hood. He wasn’t big, he looked quite small in his hood, but he covered his face and hands with white bandages. The other two were not present.

“You said my training will start today. I’m here.”

“You are.” Arian rose up. “It’s time to master the ways of a Vagabond.”

Godfrey expected many things, but certainly not this.

He was in what looked like a pit. The pit was 30 feet deep and quite wide, large enough for different kinds of summons to have enough space to fight.

Fighting at the end of the day pushed out the best from summons. It was one of the most recommended ways for an offensive-type summon.

At the top of the pit, hundreds of Vagabonds gathered. Their voices were loud as one of them summoned a spider, the same spider Godfrey saw with spiked metal coverings for its legs, that jumped from the top, crashing into the ground.

Dust rose as the beast scuttled out at high speed, leaping to the wall and holding itself vertically.

‘It’s a 7.4 high tier. Your Bow Knight won’t allow you to learn, so summon the one with the shield.’

Godfrey heard Arian’s voice in his head. He obeyed and summoned Mountain. As Mountain came out, everyone watched with rapt attention.

Even amongst humanoid summoners, the Golden Order Knights stood out.

And Godfrey knew mana jades were on the line. With each victory, he would be given a jade equal to a month’s worth of meditation.

Until he started doing raids and earning his own credits, this was the only source of attacking his mana problem.

‘You are to learn Resonance, Transposition, and Overload in this pit. Don’t try to end the fight, try to extract as much as you can from it.’

After saying that to Godfrey, Arian’s voice rang softly: “Fight.”

Instantly, the spider scuttled on the wall, heading toward Mountain. Dust billowed as the spider launched itself at him.

Mountain lifted his shield, blocking its strike while also making sure he restricted the runes. The impact sent the Knight-Captain backwards as the spider kept launching attacks.

The sound of metal striking metal rang louder and louder. It looked like Mountain was no match for the spider as he could only defend.

‘Your knight is a part of your soul. Locate the channel of your bond and follow it. That channel is memories, your memories with him.’

Hearing what Arian said, Godfrey thought of when he asked Victoria if Mountain could also take a bath.

He recalled the executioner look Mountain gave him with Sam’s armadillo at their mercy. He remembered how they fought together in the werewolf dungeon against the shrewd Natasha.

Their teamwork.

While Godfrey stood in one spot, everyone watched Mountain backed into a corner as the spider’s attacks intensified.

Just then, the sound of the spider hitting the shield sent tremors through Godfrey. He opened his eyes but discovered he could see through Mountain’s eyes.

Resonance!

Godfrey also felt Mountain’s growing impatience, which was shown by the knight’s tightening grip around the shield handle.

‘Do it.’ Godfrey said inwardly.

At that command, Mountain roared. His roar alone caused a minor gale, forcing dust upward as he slammed Bastion into the ground.

The runes lit up, golden energy launching the spider six feet high and hurtling it across ten feet before it crashed.

Thalia, the white-haired Elite Class who had dark pink and red pigment from below her shoulders right to the tip of her fingers, with ivory nails long like claws, spoke up.

She had pointy elven ears and an enchanting smile as opposed to Arden’s warm, captivating one, but a black eye patch hid one eye.

“Isn’t that supposed to be one of his weaker summons? How come it brought down a 7.4 high tier with a single counter?”

…

A/N: Chaps are rich enough. I believe they’re not short, after all, I have to enjoy them myself.
