Chapter 312: | 312 | Advent of the War that ends all Wars.
Within the coastal city of Barako, the ground mechanized forces of the United Military have subdued the remaining defenders of the fortified city. The flag of the United World Government fluttered through the breeze of the morning dawn as Mechs marched across the streets filled to the brim with rubble and destruction. It was the victory day for the country since they had finally entrenched themselves to the southern tip of Europa.

Inside the devastated government building of the coastal city was the forward command center of the 51st Mechanized Infantry Division of the United Military. Operating it were various personnel ranging from logistics to communications, there were also members of the higher leadership inside. Deep within the government building was an underground meeting room. And currently, an important assembly was ongoing.

“The defenders of the city has been forced back to its northern outskirts. From our reconnaissance drones, they appeared to be building trench lines after trench lines alongside bunkers.” An intelligence officer reported while another added. “The defenders are building an intricate network. They are planning to defend it as long as they can and waste our resources in the war effort.”

“A targeted bombing campaign should be paramount. The skies are the backyard of our strategic ships. Even their anti-aircraft technology cannot destroy a single one of our vessels. As long as we let the United Navy bombard the hell out of those defenders, the trench line wouldn’t be as heavily defended as before.” A commander stood up and suggested with a stern voice.

“Even with the bombing campaign, it would be useless against underground bunkers and who knows how many are scattered throughout the northern outskirts of the city. We must instead destroy the supply lines and let them starve. As long as their logistics are annihilated, they wouldn’t last long in the battlefield.” Another command proposed to the high command.

“Alright, instead of choosing one path over the other. How about we do the both of them? Bomb those bastards in their trench lines while also destroying their logistics in the rear. After a couple of weeks, our Mechs will descend and clean up whoever is left. Does that sound good to all of you?” The general interrupted the meeting, gazing upon every officer within the assembly.

Hearing his words, each one of them nodded in understanding and agreement. The current strategy was acceptable and would provide almost no casualties during the effort. It would cost a lot of bombs and whatever the strategic ships utilized to soar across the heavens. But it was more worth it than using human lives as the price. In mere moments, the meeting ended.

Every officer stood up from their chairs and saluted to the general. The edges of his rugged lips curved into a smile as he nodded at them. “Good, I want all of you to prepare for the upcoming operation in the north. Call the United Navy and debrief them of our plan. I want their support as this operation mostly relies on how much of the northern outskirts they could bomb into damnation.”

Outside of the government building were soldiers stationed throughout rooftops to guard every nook and cranny of their surroundings. As they observed their surroundings with a scrutinizing gaze, one of them noticed the strategic ships changing positions. An infantry soldier wearing a mechanized suit pointed towards the positioning vessels and remarked. “Are the United Navy preparing for something? Why are they moving awa-”

Before he could continue speaking, the alarms blared out of nowhere as every personnel raised their eyebrows. What followed was the monotone voice of the alarm. “All personnel! Please start the evacuation protocol! All personnel! Follow the evacuation protocol!” Without any hesitation or delay, the personnel within the government building and scattered throughout the coastal city started their evacuation.

Vital electronics and technology were taken while others that couldn’t be were effectively destroyed by the soldiers. Gunships and transport aircrafts hovered across the fortified city before making their landing throughout landing zones prescribed by the United Military. Meanwhile, the general who stepped out of the underground meeting room was astounded. He turned his attention towards a nearby officer and questioned with a stern tone. “What the hell is going on!?”

The intelligence officer glanced at him before responding. “The United Navy has received crucial intelligence, Sir. The League of Humanity is mounting an attack. We need to evacuate the coastal city or we would be struck by their offensive.” The general furrowed his eyebrows after hearing the reasoning of the evacuation. He gritted his teeth and remarked. “But why should we run away?”

“Because… Intelligence reported that an unknown weapon of mass destruction would be utilized for the attack, Sir. The United Military cannot risk staying here any longer. We must evacuate, otherwise damage of our troops will be extensive once their offensive begins.” After the intelligence officer answered him, the general took a deep breath and hardened his resolve. “Alright…”

“Ensure that the evacuation is completed within a three-minute schedule. We must be off this piece of land after that!” He ordered his personnel, who quickly nodded and followed the evacuation protocol. Transport aircrafts soared across the skies while gunships made their way to the northern outskirts and guard the rear of the evacuation effort.

Aboard the bridge of the UNSS Candor, a lone captain observed the devastated coastal city with a scrutinizing gaze. Several aerial transport vehicles were hovering away from their landing zones, heading towards the nearby strategic ships encircling the entirety of Barako. “Has the intelligence been confirmed by higher echelons of the United Military?”

“Confirmed, Sir! They have ordered a full-scale evacuation of the coastal city.” An intelligence officer saluted and reported to the captain of Candor. Numerous personnel scattered throughout the bridge, operating the strategic ship and ensuring that the crew would be coordinated with efficiency. The captain nodded in understanding and remarked. “Bastards from the Magus Tower… We should have expected that they would try something stupid against us.”

“Sir! The spatial background disruption has been detected!” An operator roared, prompting the captain to gaze upon him with furrowed eyebrows. “Where?” The operator halted for a moment, his eyes widening by the moment. Chills echoed to his spine as he mumbled in reply. “Everywhere, Sir… The entirety of the coastal city’s spatial plane is being disrupted. I-It could only mean one thing.”

“And what does it mean!?” The captain questioned, grasping for answers. They needed to know what the problem was, otherwise they wouldn’t be able to handle it. The operator took a deep breath and finally answered. “Something big is teleporting above us. No- It wouldn’t fall above us. Those bastards. They are actuall-”

Near the center of the devastated coastal city of Barako, an orb of light gleamed with blinding radiance. It pierced through the heavens and the earth with brilliance unshackled by the laws of reality. The radiant light swallowed everything from the coastal city to the strategic ships hovering above it. For the first time since the inception of the United Military, there was uncertainty.

What replaced the blinding light which enveloped the entirety of the coastal city of Barako was a gargantuan boulder spanning across the whole cityscape and above. It was as though a boundless mountain had replaced- No, fused with what was supposed to be Barako and the skies above it. The weapon of mass destruction the Magus Tower had created was known as Summit Impact.

After the emergence of the gargantuan boulder was an eerie silence. Those within the perimeter of the coastal city whether it’d be the earth, the seas, or the heavens. All was consumed by a mass of terrifying magnitude. The only ones who survived were strategic ships in the outskirts of the coast, barely avoiding the Summit Impact that had blended two spatial planes together.

Flock of birds soar across the base of the boulder, their chirps echoing in the silence that was left behind by the instantaneous annihilation of those swallowed by the blinding light. At any rate, nearby strategic ships who had survived weren’t operating well after the extermination of an entire fleet. Amongst these strategic ships was UNSS Sage, a strategic assault ship.

“What the f*ck just happened!” Inside the bridge, the captain of the strategic assault ship roared as he gazed upon a gargantuan boulder that loomed over them. It was over twenty kilometers tall, piercing through the skies like a head bump of the world. An intelligence officer stepped forward and reported. “The weapons of mass destruction employed by the Magus Tower has been utilized on the coastal city of Barako.”

“Sir, the United Military has ordered us to complete our evacuation. We will unite with the rear fleet and ensure that a new forward operating base would be deployed. The Great War has begun, Captain. With the employment of WMDs, the Citadel would also follow suite. Targets are already being discussed within the Headquarters of the United Military.”

Hearing the words of his subordinate, the captain couldn’t utter a single word and looked at the gargantuan boulder in a daze. A mere conflict in the southern tip of Europa has ignited a war that would burned the entirety of the world. It was a thought that was difficult to swallow.
