Chapter 615: Their territory… has changed a bit.
“So… you’re telling me you killed Dionysus and threatened Yama?”

Sephirothy rubbed her hands through her silvery hair, completely lost between disbelief, stress, and the kind of despair only the mother of an absurd monster could feel. The shiny strands became even more disheveled as she stared at her son as if he were a walking cataclysmic accident.

“Yes.” Vergil replied with the utmost tranquility, sitting on the sofa as if commenting on the weather. He didn’t even look up, busy playing with Roxanne and Katharina’s hair, which was glued to him like two possessive kittens.

Thanks to supernatural networks—divine gossip that travels faster than light—he didn’t even need to explain the details. Everyone already knew. Literally everyone.

“HAHAHAHA! THAT’S WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT!!”

Sapphire’s laughter exploded through the hall like a sonic earthquake, making windows tremble, lamps sway, and Sepphirothy’s soul want to leave her body. The demon matriarch was practically vibrating, her eyes gleaming with pride and pure excitement.

“I told you! Never bow your head to the gods!” She flashed a huge, mischievous, wild smile. “I’m too proud of my handsome husband.”

Vergil replied without missing a beat, still affectionately touching the girls: “Hehe, I learned from the best.”

His smile was pure demon—dangerous, satisfied, arrogant in just the right way. And Sapphire even seemed to grow a few inches taller with pride.

Sepphirothy watched this exchange as if watching her own sanity slip through her fingers. Of all the possible influences in the multiverse… did he have to pull Sapphire?

“Ah…” She let out a defeated sigh and ran a hand over her face. “Any consequences?”

Vergil tilted his head as if debating whether to eat pizza or a hamburger. “Hm… let me see… No? I mean, I killed Yama’s competitor too, just to make sure her plans go to hell, but she was quite calm. We’ll stay alert, of course. But apart from that… there’s nothing.”

Sepphirothy closed her eyes for a second.

Her deep breaths came out slow… pained… maternally weary.

She opened them again and stared at her son as if conversing with destiny incarnate in the form of an unfiltered boy.

“I’ll take a look at the consequences. In the meantime… rest. And please, go check on your territory. Selene sent me a message telling you to go there as soon as you returned.”

Vergil narrowed his eyes. “Did something happen?”

“Better see for yourself,” she said, too tired to embellish. “It seems your territory… well, see for yourself.”

Before he could ask more, Sapphire raised her hand excitedly.

“Ah, it’s also good that you go see the Gremory girl. Cabernet said she’s fully recovered after losing that dragon. Her body’s in great shape now.”

Vergil blinked, searching his memory.

And then it clicked: Cabernet Gremory… and his daughter, Runeas Gremory.

…

The Agares transport room was decorated with intricate circles, glyphs that looked like living serpents of floating light. Vergil ran his finger through the air, activating the seal as if flipping a regular light switch.

Katharina adjusted her hair clip, excited.

Roxanne tapped her foot on the ground, restless.

Ada had gone to rest—and honestly, after almost dying twice in the same day, no one was going to argue with that.

The circle glowed.

A crackle.

A sound like a breath from the cosmos.

And then—

FWOOM.

They disappeared.

And reappeared… in the sky.

Literally in the sky.

Vergil emerged first from the teleport beam, his hands in his pockets, the air still imbued with his theatrical calm. Roxanne and Katharina appeared right behind him, floating around him thanks to the naturally magical environment of the territory.

As soon as the light dissipated, they saw.

Vergil frowned.

Katharina let out an incredulous “Huh?”

Roxanne blinked as if she’d been slapped invisibly.

The Forest of the Apocalypse…

…simply wasn’t there.

Nothing. No trees. No ancient monsters. None of the natural labyrinths that had always surrounded Vergil’s kingdom.

In its place…

Vergil lowered his gaze, confused.

And saw an entire city.

Not a village.

Not a hamlet formed by half a dozen demons who decided to build shacks.

A city.

Alive. Bustling. And colossal.

From their vantage point in the sky, Vergil could see elegant black towers, erected like obsidian spears pointing towards the firmament. Castles of Gothic and Victorian architecture stretched in circular layers—a spiral that began at ground level and rose to floating platforms.

Roxanne squeezed his arm.

“Love… this is… your territory, right?”

Vergil continued staring at the panorama below, so focused that he didn’t even respond immediately. His aura vibrated silently—not with power, but with disbelief.

Katharina ran her hands over her face, her eyes wide at the buildings.

There were somber mansions with crimson stained glass.

There were black stone bridges connecting towers that seemed to touch the clouds.

Demons flew, walked, talked, living their lives as if none of this was extraordinary.

There were markets, shops, roads, lanterns of blue fire hanging from chains…

And in the heart of the city…

A monumental gate, over a hundred meters high, marked with runes that shone in blue and gold: Gate of the Great Guardian.

That was the old landmark Selene had said she would take care of… but not like that.

Vergil finally spoke, his voice heavy with weariness, confusion, and a touch of sarcasm:

“Am I… dreaming?”

Katharina held his chin, forcing him to look at her.

“Vergil… this dream has taxes, infrastructure, and urban planning. None of that resembles your daydreams.”

Roxanne flew a few meters below, her green eyes gleaming as she observed the city with fascination.

“It’s not a dream,” she replied. “Look at that.”

She pointed to a line of miniature black marble temples, all with statues that looked…

Vergil narrowed his eyes.

And saw—with growing discomfort—that some of the sculptures were of him.

Him.

In poses he never struck.

With wings he didn’t have.

With an aura he definitely hadn’t approved of.

Vergil rubbed his face with his hand.

“I’m going to kill someone.”

Roxanne chuckled softly.

Katharina playfully punched his shoulder.

But the unease remained.

Because, honestly… it didn’t make any sense.

His territory—the Apocalypse Forest—was a domain that had always resisted civilization. A living mass of ancient energy, where monsters, spirits, and demons lived in natural disarray.

To transform it into a city…

it would be necessary to clear the entire biome.

Control thousands of creatures.

Rewrite the ecosystem.

Shape the soil’s mana.

And, above all…

Taming the heart of the forest.

Not even Vergil, with all his demonic aura and natural dominion, had attempted to fully tame it, because it would be a wretched endeavor.

And yet…

There it was.

Perfectly domesticated.

Transformed.

Reorganized.

And, dare I say…

Beautiful.

Floating around them, the sky of the territory was clearer than ever. The dense mana clouds were gone, nor the thunder of wild energy. It was still a demonic sky, yes, but… breathable. Harmonious.

Katharina put her arm around his waist. “Do you think Selene… did all this alone?”

Vergil remained silent for a few seconds.

Then he replied: “Not even if she were five Selenes.”

Roxanne crossed her arms, floating at their eye level.

“Then who did it? Because building an entire city isn’t a weekend hobby.”

Vergil lowered his head, observing more details—the air traffic, the guards patrolling the towers, the energy flowing through the streets.

There was order.

There was civilization.

There was… military structure.

And most importantly:

The territory responded to him.

He felt it.

The instant he descended a little further, the entire city seemed to sigh—as if recognizing its sovereign.

Vergil took a deep breath. “Someone’s messing around too much with my things.”

Katharina hugged him around the neck, whispering in his ear: “Can we go down?”

Vergil, still confused, nodded.

“Yes… let’s take a closer look. And we’ll find Selene. She’ll explain everything to me, even if I have to hit her.”

Roxanne gave a provocative smile. “It’ll be fun.”

Vergil gave one last look at the city that was now his.

And then they began to descend—slowly, leaving the teleportation circle in the sky, toward the newly created infernal metropolis, which pulsed with life as if it had been waiting for this very moment.

The arrival of the king who never asked to be king.

Vergil closed his eyes as they approached the immense towers.

The descent to the ground was slow, almost ceremonial. As Vergil approached the city’s monumental entrance, the ambient energy adjusted to him in a strange way—as if everything there breathed to the rhythm of his presence.

The great rune door opened by itself, emitting a deep, almost organic crack. On the other side, two guards in black armor straightened up immediately, but only one of them reacted when the trio landed.

The soldier saw Vergil.

And collapsed to the ground.

He didn’t stumble.

He didn’t stagger.

He simply threw himself to his knees with such force that the impact echoed through the corridor.

“SIR! WELCOME, SIR!”

Vergil blinked, confused.

Katharina and Roxanne exchanged glances as if witnessing a strange ritual from an unknown culture.

The guard kept his forehead pressed to the ground as if trying to dig a hole with it.

Vergil tilted his head. “Wait… wait. You know me?”

“OF COURSE I DO, YOUR SOVEREIGNTY!” the soldier replied in a desperate cry of devotion. “I have been your faithful servant since the moment you declared us your slaves!”

Katharina’s eyes widened.

Roxanne opened her mouth.

Vergil… only furrowed his brow.

“I… said that when?”

The guard answered immediately, still staring at the ground as if looking directly at the owner of the territory was grounds for execution.

“When you were arrested, my lord!”

Silence fell like a hammer.

Roxanne slowly turned her head toward Vergil.

Katharina did the same.

Both pairs of eyes met the man who was now scratching his chin with the most ‘holy shit, which version of me did this’ expression possible.

Then Vergil burst into laughter—loud, wild, genuine. It echoed off the entrance walls like thunder having a good time.

“HAHAHAHAHA! Oh, damn… that’s so me…” He shook his head, still laughing. “Right. Thanks for the job, soldier.”

The guard trembled with emotion.

“TO SERVE IS MY HONOR AND PURPOSE, MY LORD!”

Vergil made a vague gesture with his hand, telling him to get up and get on with his life. The soldier ran off—literally ran—as if he had just received a divine blessing.

Katharina crossed her arms, staring at Vergil suspiciously.

“Okay. Explain.”

Roxanne rested her elbow on his shoulder mischievously. “What’s this story about enslaving an army while you were a prisoner?”

Vergil sighed, running a hand through his hair.

“An old story.”

Roxanne raised an eyebrow. “What does that mean?”

“That I won’t tell you.” He smiled. “And you’ll live better off not knowing.”

Katharina scoffed. “That only made it worse!”

Vergil simply walked between the two, entering the city as if he were at home—because technically he was.

The streets opened before him as if responding to his aura. Demons in armor stopped to stare, merchants froze mid-sale, demonic children nudged their parents trying to understand who the guy was who made the ground vibrate.

And when they realized…

The first demon knelt.

Then another.

Then another.

And another.

In seconds, the entire street was on its knees.

Katharina blinked rapidly. “Okay… this escalated.”

Roxanne whispered, “This is making me… curious.”

Vergil raised a hand.

Everyone stood, obeying without question.

The simple gesture made it clear to him:

The city wasn’t just his.

It had been built for him.

By someone who knew the nature of the territory very well…

…or him.

Vergil took a deep breath, walking between the buildings while Katharina and Roxanne followed closely behind.

“Selene will give me answers,” he said, serious this time.
