Chapter 452: An Expected Guest
Lying on the roof, Feng Wu and the other shadow guards removed one of the tiles and peered into the room below.
Sitting on a round stool by a wooden table, the young lady took a sip of water. She frowned slightly at the bland taste, set the cup down, and gracefully dabbed her lips with a handkerchief.
Seeing this, the maidservant’s eyes shifted slightly. “Third Young Lady, when do you plan to meet Great General Feng?”
The young lady thought silently for a moment before replying. “This place is full of refugees, and wars might break out anytime. Before something bad happens, we need to leave.”
She paused briefly, then added, “Let’s rest for a while, then go meet him later. Let the waiter prepare bath water.”
The maidservant’s eyes flickered when she heard this. “Yes, Third Young Lady.”
On the roof, Feng Wu had heard everything. He exchanged glances with the other shadow guards, then made a few hand signs. Understanding his intention, two of them nodded.
With those two shadow guards staying behind to observe the wealthy young lady and her maidservant, Feng Wu and the others spread out to investigate further.
A few hours later, when the sun was at its peak, Feng Wu returned to the Great General’s mansion. Appearing outside Feng Xiyan’s study, he knocked on the door.
Knock, knock, knock.
A few seconds later, Feng Xiyan’s calm voice came from inside, “Come in.”
Pushing the door open, Feng Wu entered. Seeing Feng Xiyan reading a book, he stepped forward.
Clasping his fists, Feng Wu reported, “Master, the owner of that luxurious carriage is a young lady from Lin Nan.”
“This subordinate has investigated her and found that she is a member of the third branch of the Lin Clan from Lin Nan Province, named Lin Weiwen. She came here for the purpose of meeting you, Master.”
Listening to his report, Feng Xiyan set the book down.
Slowly tapping the table with his slender index finger, he murmured, “A member of the Lin Clan? This is the second one who is coming to find me after so many years have passed.”
Seeing that Feng Xiyan was deep in thought, Feng Wu did not dare to disturb him.
After a long silence, Feng Xiyan instructed, “Go and keep an eye on her. Report everything she does and who meets her.”
“Yes, Master.” Receiving the order, Feng Wu left the Great General’s mansion.
Left alone, Feng Xiyan stood up, then left the study to find Lin Ruichuan. Before long, he stepped into the guest courtyard and found Lin Ruichuan speaking with Bai Hanyun.
Raising his brows slightly, Feng Xiyan approached them. “Yun’er, how come you are here?”
Hearing this, Bai Hanyun turned and saw him walking over. Smiling, she stood up and approached him.
“Feng Xiyan, have you finished your work?”
Feng Xiyan nodded in response, then looked between Lin Ruichuan and Bai Hanyun. “You two know each other?”
Bai Hanyun shook her head. “I just coincidentally met Young Master Lin today when I was walking around the mansion.”
Taking a seat between them, Feng Xiyan said, “I saw the two of you talking so happily just now.”
Sensing the hidden meaning in his words, Lin Ruichuan thoughtfully looked at Feng Xiyan.
Unlike the sensitive Lin Ruichuan, Bai Hanyun smiled, poured Feng Xiyan a cup of tea, and replied, “Yes. Young Master Lin was telling me some folk stories from Lin Nan.”
Feng Xiyan listened attentively as Bai Hanyun repeated the story, then glanced at Lin Ruichuan whenever she praised Lin Ruichuan.
Sitting there in silence, Lin Ruichuan watched Bai Hanyun excitedly recount the tale while Feng Xiyan listened patiently.
‘Does my younger cousin like Miss Bai?’
Just as this thought crossed his mind, Feng Xiyan’s voice pulled him back, “Elder Cousin, have you heard that someone from the Lin Clan arrived today?”
Hearing this question, Lin Ruichuan thought for a moment, then smiled. “Is the one who’s coming a young lady?”
“It seems you know who it is.” Feng Xiyan said, observing Lin Ruichuan’s expression.
Nodding, Lin Ruichuan explained, “Younger Cousin, you might not know, but the Lin Clan is not as peaceful as it appears from the outside.”
“After my father took over as clan patriarch, Third Paternal Uncle remained dissatisfied with Grandfather’s decision. He believed he was more suited for the position and constantly opposed my father.”
“Recently, Third Paternal Uncle seems to have grown closer to Second Paternal Uncle and the others. My father felt the situation was turning unfavorable. Therefore, he asked me to deliver my paternal aunt’s letter to you—just in case Third Paternal Uncle really makes a move against us.”
“Although I left in secret, it won’t be long before my paternal uncles discover it. So the one who came today should be Lin Weiwen, the only daughter of my Third Paternal Uncle.”
After saying that, Lin Ruichuan smiled and asked, “Am I right?”
Feng Xiyan nodded. After a brief silence, he said, “I never thought the internal strife within the Lin Clan was this severe.”
Lin Ruichuan saw Feng Xiyan’s furrowed brows and chuckled. “This is nothing. Every family and clan has its own hidden problems that outsiders never see.”
Bai Hanyun looked at Lin Ruichuan’s composed expression and said, “Young Master Lin looks so calm. You must already have a plan.”
“Miss Bai is indeed insightful,” Lin Ruichuan praised politely.
Feng Xiyan took a sip of water, then said calmly, “Elder Cousin, this Lin Weiwen is here to see me.”
“I already guessed that,” Lin Ruichuan replied without surprise.
“Should I meet her?” Feng Xiyan asked.
Lin Ruichuan studied him for a few seconds, then smiled. “Meet her. Why wouldn’t you?”
“You are not afraid that I will join hands with them to deal with you?” Feng Xiyan asked, his tone carrying a hint of testing the water.
Lin Ruichuan chuckled as soon as he heard it. “You won’t.”
Realizing how firmly Lin Ruichuan believed that he would never side with Lin Weiwen, Feng Xiyan thought, ‘Why does he trust me this much? Does he know something else?’
