Chapter 406: General Wu
Rushing to the training ground, the servant shouted anxiously, “Master, someone from the imperial palace is here with an imperial decree!”

In the training ground, General Wu heard the commotion and frowned slightly.

Noticing his displeased expression, his trusted adjutant walked toward the source of the noise.

When he saw the servant running and shouting, the adjutant scolded, “What are you shouting for? Be careful, or you will lose your head if you disturb General Wu.”

Frightened by the adjutant’s words, the servant quickly knelt before him and said fearfully, “Sir, please forgive this servant!”

Annoyed by the servant’s shouting, the adjutant waved his hand and said, “Get up, get up. Why are you kneeling here? Do you think your life is too long?”

Shrinking his neck, the servant fearfully stood up and lowered his head.

Seeing that the servant had calmed down, the adjutant asked, “Why were you shouting and running like that just now?”

The servant replied, “Sir, someone from the imperial palace has arrived with an imperial decree. This servant saw that the messenger was an imperial guard and thought something bad had happened, so this servant ran here to inform the general.”

The moment the adjutant heard this, his eyes widened in shock. “Why didn’t you say so sooner?!”

Before the servant could react, the adjutant rushed back to the training ground.

Watching his back disappear into the moon gate, the servant scratched his head and muttered in grievance, “Weren’t you the one who told me not to shout just now? Why are you shouting now that you have heard the news?”

While the servant returned to his duties in a state of grievance, the adjutant had already informed General Wu.

Placing the spear back on the weapon rack, General Wu said, “Let’s go and see what happened.”

Without even wiping the sweat from his body, General Wu hurriedly walked to the front yard.

By the time he arrived, the other members of the Wu Clan were already waiting there.

Seeing him approach, the imperial soldier raised the imperial decree and said respectfully, “General Wu, please accept the decree.”

General Wu stepped forward and knelt before the imperial soldier, followed by the other members of the Wu Clan.

Standing before them, the imperial soldier unfolded the imperial decree and read it in a powerful voice.

“By the will of Heaven, the Emperor decrees. General Wu is to lead three hundred thousand troops to Xiqiang City to rescue the Second Imperial Prince, Jin Cen, and the Seventh Imperial Princess, Jin Yan, from the Feng Army. Accept the decree!”

When the imperial soldier finished reading the imperial decree, Madam Wu’s heart sank.

As the wife of a general, she knew that a soldier’s life was only secure if they could go to the battlefield. But this time, their opponent was none other than the God of War of the Yu Empire, Feng Xiyan. The probability of her husband returning safely was too low.

Looking at her husband anxiously, Madam Wu could only clench her trembling hands and put on a calm expression.

Unlike his wife’s worries, General Wu calmly accepted the imperial decree. “Your subject accepts the decree.”

The imperial soldier handed the decree to him and said, “General Wu, His Majesty orders you to depart in two sichen.”

“Understood.”

Clasping his fists, the imperial soldier added, “This subordinate must return to report to His Majesty. This subordinate will take my leave first.”

General Wu nodded at him and said, “Thank you for your hard work.”

After the soldier left, Madam Wu’s legs gave out as she stood up from the ground.

“Wife!” General Wu hurriedly caught her before she fell and asked worriedly, “Are you alright?”

Holding back tears, Madam Wu gripped his arms tightly. “Husband, will you be alright?”

Understanding her question, General Wu was silent for a few seconds before saying, “Wife, no matter who the enemy is, it is my duty to go to the battlefield when His Majesty gives the order.”

“But—!”

Before she could finish, General Wu interrupted, “Wife, please help me pack some clothes. I need to make some arrangements in the barracks.”

Knowing that he had no time to waste, Madam Wu could only nod. “Don’t worry, Husband. I will go immediately.”

General Wu watched her for a few more seconds, then let her go after he was sure that his wife had regained her strength. Turning around, he said to his adjutant, “Go to the barracks!”

Madam Wu watched her husband and his adjutant leave in a hurry, and only looked away once they were out of sight.

Wiping away her tears with a handkerchief, Madam Wu raised her chin and calmly ordered, “Return to the main courtyard.”

While Madam Wu busied herself packing for General Wu, time passed quickly.

By the time the servants loaded the last wooden boxes filled with supplies, clothes, and General Wu’s personal belongings onto the horse carts, it was almost time for departure.

Seeing that the time had come, Madam Wu boarded the horse carriage and ordered, “Go to the city gate.”

At her order, the coachman flicked his whip, and the horse carriage moved toward the city gate.

Before long, Madam Wu and her servants arrived. After the coachman stopped the horse carriage by the roadside, a maidservant helped her down.

Looking at the majestic sight of three hundred thousand soldiers lined up neatly outside the city, Madam Wu felt only worry and fear in her heart.

Clutching her handkerchief, she bit her lip and thought, ‘The Jin Empire has only five hundred thousand soldiers in total.’

‘His Majesty already gave one hundred and fifty thousand to the Second Imperial Prince earlier. By sending another three hundred thousand now, His Majesty is nearly emptying the empire’s entire military strength.’

‘Is the God of War of the Yu Empire truly so strong that His Majesty must send four hundred and fifty thousand soldiers against him? Can my husband return safely from this difficult battle?’
