Chapter 345: Cowards
Seeing several horse carriages already waiting for them, Vice General Ji quickly helped Madam Ji board the first carriage before following her inside.
“Quick! Go now!” Vice General Ji urged from inside the carriage.
Hearing this, the bodyguard flicked the whip and drove away swiftly, stirring dust into the air.
Half an hour later, one of the soldiers rushed into the commander’s tent. “Report!”
Before he could kneel to deliver the urgent war report, the soldier noticed that the tent was in a mess. His heart sank as he couldn’t find Vice General Ji.
In the next second, he rushed out of the tent and shouted in despair, “Not good! The Vice General has run away!”
As his words echoed through the surroundings, chaos erupted in the Ji Army’s barracks.
Upon hearing the noises, some of the old generals serving under Ji Hui came out from the large room used for military discussions.
Grabbing one of the soldiers who was running around, one of the generals asked with a hint of anxiety in his voice, “What happened here?!”
The soldier was stunned for a moment and then hurriedly replied, “T—the Vice General Ji has run away.”
The moment his words fell, the generals were shocked.
Coming to his senses, the general pulled the soldier closer and asked, “When?”
The soldier shook his head and replied, “This subordinate doesn’t know. One of the captains guarding the gate went to find Vice General Ji just now, but found his tent in disarray, and he was nowhere to be found.”
When the general heard this, he let go of the soldier and turned to the other generals. “What should we do now?”
The oldest general frowned so deeply that his brows seemed capable of squishing a bird to death.
After a brief moment of silence, he said, “Vice General Ji is a coward. Without someone backing him, he would not dare to run away.”
When the others heard this, they looked at one another, and then the youngest general asked, “Do you mean… Madam Ji is the one who proposed this idea of deserting the battlefield to Vice General Ji?”
The oldest general nodded. “I suppose Madam Ji heard that the one leading the Feng Army this time is Feng Xiyan and knew that we couldn’t win, so she decided to leave this city before the Feng Army attacks us.”
When the others heard this, they could not control their anger.
The youngest general gritted his teeth and cursed, “Cowards!”
Patting his shoulder, the oldest general said, “Calm down. Although we still have more than sixty thousand soldiers, everyone is hungry and thirsty. Feng Xiyan’s five thousand soldiers can easily wipe us out in no time.”
Sensing there was more to his words, the first general asked, “Do you have an idea?”
The oldest general nodded. “I heard that Heaven blesses the Feng Army. Not only do they have endless supplies, but they also have weapons and equipment far superior to ours. Since we cannot win against them, let us join them.”
Frowning slightly, another general asked, “Will they accept our surrender?”
Shaking his head, the oldest general replied, “This general is not sure. However, if we want to survive, this is our only choice and opportunity.”
When the others heard this, they exchanged looks before clasping their fists and answering in unison, “We will follow your lead.”
Satisfied with their answers, the oldest general added, “Let us inform the soldiers. If they want to join us, then we must protect them. If they want to leave, then we should let them go before it is too late.”
Nodding in agreement, the generals quickly went to the open field in the military garrison and gathered everyone there.
Meanwhile, Feng Xiyan was listening to the shadow guards’ report inside his tent.
Kneeling before him, one of the three shadow guards said, “Master, as you expected, Madam Ji led all members of the Ji Clan and secretly escaped from Xiquan City. Right now, our members have already infiltrated the Ji Clan’s manor and are searching for evidence of Prime Minister Wen’s crimes.”
After he finished, the second shadow guard added, “Master, after Madam Ji went to the Ji Army’s garrison to pick up the eldest young master of the Ji Clan, they left Xiquan City and headed south. Based on our intelligence, the Ji Clan originated from Nanhe City. They are probably going there now.”
When he was done reporting, the third shadow guard said, “Master, we have a new update on the Ji Army. After the eldest young master of the Ji Clan left with the Ji Clan members, the Ji Army lost its backbone, and chaos erupted inside the garrison.”
“Right now, the remaining generals have decided to surrender to us and are discussing the conditions for their surrender.”
Feng Xiyan was satisfied after listening to their reports. He looked at the third shadow guard and asked, “How many troops are left in the Ji Army right now?”
The third shadow guard replied, “Answering the Master. Roughly sixty thousand troops remained in the Ji Army. However, most of them were too weak to move because of long-term starvation and thirst.”
Sitting beside Feng Xiyan, Bai Hanyun’s eyes lit up. She turned to Feng Xiyan and said, “Feng Xiyan, can you let me take care of this matter?”
Feng Xiyan looked at her for a while and knew what she was thinking. He smiled and asked, “Do you want to put on another show?”
Bai Hanyun nodded and explained, “Since they have already decided to surrender, there must be no supplies left in Xiquan City. I know that you want to expand the Feng Army, but it is not wise to use soldiers who have no loyalty to their commanders.”
“As you saw before, we managed to convert the Jin Army soldiers with a simple show, so I believe it will be easier for us to convert the Ji Army. The best victory is winning without losing a single soldier or shedding any blood.”
