Chapter 268: Chapter 268
Seraphina’s POV
“Who’s there?” Valerie’s voice cut through the air. “Come out! Now!”
My body froze. Every muscle locked.
Run. I should run. Get help. Come back with warriors.
But my eyes wouldn’t leave him. Damien. Lying there. So still. So pale.
Dead.
The word echoed in my head. Over and over.
Dead. Dead. Dead.
“I said come out!” Valerie took a step toward my hiding spot.
Something inside me snapped.
Not fear. Not panic. Something bigger. Hotter. More primal than anything I’d ever felt.
Rage.
Pure. Absolute. All-consuming rage.
They killed him. These monsters killed my husband. The father of my children. The man I’d just realized I still loved.
And they were laughing about it.
A sound ripped from my throat. Not human. Not wolf. Something in between.
Raw. Feral. The sound of a heart breaking.
I exploded from the bushes.
Didn’t think. Didn’t plan. Just moved.
My body launched through the air. Every ounce of strength. Every bit of rage. All of it focused on one target.
Valerie.
Her eyes went wide. Shocked. She tried to dodge.
Too slow.
I slammed into her. We went down hard. Hit the ground. My hands found her throat.
“You killed him!” The words came out strangled. Broken. “You killed him!”
My teeth found her shoulder. I bit down. Hard. Tasted blood. Didn’t care.
She screamed. Tried to throw me off. Couldn’t.
All those months of training. All those hours in the gym. Every punch I’d learned. Every move I’d practiced.
All of it came flooding back.
I was human. Weak. Powerless compared to wolves.
But right now? Right now I didn’t feel human.
I felt like a monster.
Valerie’s fist connected with my face. Pain exploded. Stars burst behind my eyes.
Didn’t matter.
I held on. Bit harder. Felt flesh tear.
Then something massive hit my side.
Voss.
His hand closed around my shoulder. Yanked. I flew backward. Hit a tree. Hard.
The air left my lungs. Pain everywhere. But I scrambled up anyway.
“Well, well.” Valerie’s voice was thick. She pressed a hand to her bleeding shoulder. “Look who decided to join us.”
I spat blood. Wiped my mouth. Glared at her.
“Seraphina.” She laughed. Actually laughed. “My dear sister. How nice of you to visit.”
“Shut up.” The words came out low. Deadly.
“Oh, someone’s angry.” She circled. Like a predator. “What’s wrong? Mad that we killed your precious husband?”
I didn’t answer. Just watched. Waiting for an opening.
“He died screaming, you know.” Valerie’s smile widened. “Begging. It was pathetic really.”
Lies. She was lying. Trying to make me angry. Make me stupid.
“The poison worked perfectly.” She kept talking. “Slow. Painful. He felt every second.”
My hands clenched into fists. Everything my trainer taught me. Stance. Balance. Breathing.
“You should have heard him.” Valerie continued. “Calling for you. Over and over. ‘Sera. Sera, please.'”
Something cold settled over me. Through the rage. Through the pain.
Focus.
I shifted my weight. Got into stance. Hands up. Chin down.
“Aww, look.” Valerie gestured at me. “She thinks she can fight. How cute.”
“Without your wolf?” She tilted her head. “You’re nothing. Just a pathetic human playing dress-up.”
“I’m going to kill you.” The words came out calm. Certain. “Both of you.”
Voss laughed. “You? Kill us? With what? Your little human fists?”
I moved.
Fast. Low. Closing the distance before he could react.
My fist drove into his ribs. Right where his wounds from fighting Damien would be.
He gasped. Stumbled back.
I didn’t stop. Spun. Kicked Valerie’s knee. Heard something crack.
She screamed. Went down.
My training kicked in fully now. Every lesson. Every drill. Every piece of muscle memory.
Jab. Cross. Hook. Uppercut.
Voss tried to grab me. I ducked. Drove my elbow into his stomach.
He doubled over. I brought my knee up. Connected with his face.
Blood exploded. His nose. Maybe broken. Maybe not. Didn’t care.
Valerie tried to stand. I swept her legs. She went down again.
“You bitch!” She snarled. “I’m going to tear you apart!”
“Try it.” I was breathing hard. Adrenaline pumping. “Come on. Try it.”
Voss charged. Slower than he should be. His wounds slowing him down.
I sidestepped. Used his momentum. Threw him past me. Into a tree.
He hit hard. Grunted. Slid down.
For a moment—just a moment—I thought I could win this.
Thought I could actually beat them. Kill them. Avenge Damien.
Then Valerie shifted.
The change was fast. Brutal. Bones cracking. Fur sprouting. That horrible sound of flesh reshaping.
A massive gray wolf stood where my sister had been.
Yellow eyes. Bared teeth. Foam at the corners of her mouth.
Oh shit.
“That’s not fair,” I muttered. Backing up. “That’s really not fair.”
She lunged.
I dodged. Barely. Her teeth snapped inches from my throat.
Rolled. Came up running. Needed distance. Needed space. Needed—
Pain exploded in my arm.
Her jaws closed. Teeth sinking deep. Tearing. Ripping.
I screamed. Tried to pull away. Couldn’t.
She shook her head. Like a dog with a toy. My body lifted. Flew. Hit the ground.
Everything hurt. Everything was spinning. Blood everywhere.
My arm. God, my arm. The pain was unbelievable.
“That’s more like it.” Valerie’s voice. Human again. Standing over me. “You stay down now. Like a good little human.”
I tried to get up. My body wouldn’t cooperate. Too much pain. Too much blood.
Voss appeared. Limping. Bleeding. But upright.
His foot slammed into my side. I flew. Hit something hard. Couldn’t breathe.
“Pathetic.” He spat blood. “You actually thought you could beat us?”
“You’re nothing.” He kicked me again. “Less than nothing.”
I curled up. Tried to protect myself. Every breath agony.
“Should we kill her now?” Valerie asked. Casual. Like discussing dinner plans.
“Not yet.” Voss crouched down. His face close to mine. “I want her to know first.”
“Know what?” I managed to choke out.
“About your husband.” His smile was cruel. “About how he died.”
“He’s dead.” The words felt like knives. “You already told me.”
“Yes. But you should know the details.” He grabbed my hair. Yanked my head back. “You should know he called for you. Over and over. Begging you to save him.”
Tears burned my eyes. “Stop.”
“But you weren’t there.” He continued. “You were too busy signing divorce papers. Too busy hating him for something he didn’t do.”
“Stop it.” The sobs were coming now.
“He died thinking you hated him.” Voss’s voice was almost gentle. “Died believing you’d left him. Abandoned him.”
“That’s not—” I couldn’t finish. Couldn’t speak through the tears.
“And now?” He released my hair. Let my head drop. “Now you get to join him.”
He reached into his pocket. Pulled out a small vial. Dark liquid inside.
“Poison.” He held it up. “The same poison we used on your husband. We have just enough left.”
My heart stopped.
“Should be quick.” Voss uncorked it. “Quicker than his death anyway. We gave him a massive dose. Wanted him to suffer.”
“But you?” He smiled. “You’re not worth the effort. This small amount should kill you in minutes.”
He grabbed my jaw. Forced my mouth open.
I tried to fight. Tried to move. My body wouldn’t respond. Too weak. Too damaged.
The vial came closer. Closer.
“You know what the best part is?” Voss’s voice was soft. Almost kind. “Your kids. They’ll be orphans now. No mother. No father. Just two little wolves all alone.”
“No.” The word came out broken. “Please. Not them.”
“Don’t worry.” He tilted the vial. “We’ll take good care of them. Raise them right. Teach them how real Alphas behave.”
“Sweet dreams, Luna.” Voss’s face filled my vision. “Say hello to your husband for us.”
