Chapter 265: Chapter 265
Seraphina’s POV
The night dragged on.
More reports came in. More bodies found. More evidence of a massive battle.
But no Damien. No Lucas. No answers.
By three AM, exhaustion was setting in. For everyone. Including me.
“Sera.” Elder Morrison touched my shoulder gently. “You need to rest. Even for an hour. You’re no good to anyone if you collapse.”
“I’m fine.”
“You’re not fine.” His voice got firmer. “Go home. Check on your children. Get some sleep. We’ll call if anything changes.”
I wanted to argue. Wanted to stay. Wanted to keep coordinating until we found him.
But he was right. I was running on fumes. Making mistakes. Missing details.
“Two hours.” I grabbed my bag. “I’ll be back in two hours.”
The drive home was a blur.
My apartment building appeared. Dark. Quiet. Safe.
Wrong. Everything felt wrong.
I parked. Walked inside. Ophelia was asleep on my couch. The kids in their room.
I stood in the doorway. Watching them sleep. So peaceful. So innocent.
How was I going to tell them? If Damien was really gone, how was I supposed to explain that Daddy wasn’t coming home?
That I’d pushed him away. Refused to believe him. Let him go to war thinking I hated him.
The USB drive felt like a brick in my pocket.
Too late. I’d realized the truth too late.
I walked to my room. Sat on the bed. Pulled out my phone.
No new messages. No updates. No news.
Just silence.
My finger hovered over Damien’s contact. I hit call anyway. Knowing it wouldn’t connect. Needing to try.
*The number you have dialed is not available. Please try again later.*
I tried again. And again. And again.
Each time hoping. Each time disappointed.
Finally, I gave up. Set the phone down.
Lay back on the bed. Fully clothed. Too exhausted to change. Too wired to actually sleep.
Just staring at the ceiling. Wondering. Worrying. Waiting.
My phone buzzed.
I grabbed it so fast I nearly dropped it.
Lucas.
**Lucas: Sera. Emergency. Call me now.**
My hands shook as I hit call. It rang once.
“Sera.” Lucas’s voice was wrong. Strained. Frightened. “Where are you?”
“Home. What’s wrong? Did you find him? Is he”
“Listen to me carefully.” His words came fast. Urgent. “Damien is missing. Not just missing. His Alpha aura—it’s gone. Completely gone.”
The room tilted.
“What do you mean gone?”
“I mean I can’t feel him.” Lucas’s voice cracked. “Every wolf in the pack can feel their Alpha. It’s always there. Always present. But Sera—it’s gone. Like he doesn’t exist anymore.”
“That’s not possible.” I was on my feet. Pacing. “He’s just unconscious. Or blocked somehow. Or—”
“I’ve never felt anything like this.” He cut me off. “It’s like he’s been severed from the pack. Or…”
He didn’t finish.
Didn’t need to.
There was only one way an Alpha aura disappeared completely.
Death.
“No.” The word came out broken. “No, he’s not dead. He can’t be dead. I need to tell him—I need to—”
“Sera, breathe.” Lucas’s voice got firmer. “We don’t know anything for certain. But you need to stay safe. Stay with the kids. Don’t do anything—”
“Where are you?” I was already moving. Grabbing my keys. My jacket. “Give me your location.”
“Sera, no—”
“Give me your fucking location, Lucas!”
Silence. Then: “Forward camp. Or what’s left of it. But Sera, you can’t come here. It’s not safe. The rogues could still be—”
“Send me coordinates.” I cut him off. “Now.”
“Sera, please. Think about the kids. Think about—”
“I am thinking about them!” Tears were streaming down my face. “I’m thinking about how they’ll grow up without a father if I don’t do something! I’m thinking about how I’ll live with myself if he’s out there dying and I didn’t even try!”
“The last time I acted impulsively, I almost died.” My voice cracked. “But this time—this time I know the truth. This time I know he didn’t betray me. This time I know I love him.”
“And if he’s really gone, Lucas—if he’s really dead—I need to know. I need to see. I can’t just sit here and wait.”
More silence.
Then my phone buzzed. Coordinates. Map location.
“Thank you.” I was already running. Down the stairs. To my car. “I’m on my way.”
“Sera, wait—”
I hung up.
Ran back inside. Shook Ophelia awake.
“Watch the kids.” I shoved my keys at her. “Don’t let them leave. Don’t let anyone in. If I’m not back by morning, call Claire.”
“Sera, what’s—”
“Just do it!” I was already running again. “Please.”
I made it to my car. Started the engine. Pulled up the coordinates.
I should call someone. Should take backup. Should do this smart.
But I couldn’t wait. Couldn’t risk the delay. Couldn’t stand the thought of him alone and hurt while I wasted time organizing.
I’d been too late to believe him when it mattered.
I wouldn’t be too late to find him.
The car roared to life. I pulled out of the parking lot. Headed north.
Toward the border. Toward the camp. Toward whatever waited for me there.
Toward Damien.
