Chapter 211: Chapter 211
Seraphina’s POV
The rain hammered down on us. Cold. Relentless.
But I barely felt it.
All I could feel was his arms around me. His chest heaving against mine. His heart pounding so hard I could feel it through our soaked clothes.
“What are you talking about?” His voice cracked. “What new love?”
“Don’t!” I shoved at his chest. “Don’t pretend you don’t know!”
“Sera, I genuinely don’t—”
“I SAW YOU!” The words exploded out. Three years of pain. Three years of imagining this moment. “I saw you with her! At that restaurant! She was touching your arm! Smiling at you! Looking at my children like—like—”
My voice broke completely.
“At a restaurant?” Damien’s grip loosened slightly. Confusion flickered across his face. “When? What are you—”
“Weeks ago!” Tears mixed with rain on my face. “I was driving through downtown and I saw you! You were sitting outside with her! With Emma! And you were laughing and she was—”
Understanding crashed across his features.
“Oh God.” He pulled back slightly. Stared at me. “The birthday party.”
“What?”
“That was Grace’s birthday party.” His voice was urgent now. Desperate. “Lucas and Riley’s daughter. It was just—it was just a kids’ party, Sera!”
I shook my head violently. Water flew from my hair. “You were with her! She was touching you!”
“Because the kids needed—” He stopped. Took a breath. “Lily was upset. She wanted to go to the party but she was the only one without a mother there. So I asked Emma to come. Just—just as a favor. To make things less awkward for the kids.”
“Liar.” The word was venom. “I saw how she looked at you!”
“I don’t care how she looked at me!” His hands came up to cup my face. Gentle despite his desperation. “Sera, listen to me. Please. Emma is nothing. She works for me. That’s it. That’s all she’s ever been.”
“Then why does Lily love her?” My voice broke on my daughter’s name. “Why does Adrian smile for her when he won’t even look at me?”
“Because she’s been here.” The words were quiet now. Devastated. “And you haven’t.”
The truth hit like a slap.
“I know it’s not fair!” His hands tightened on my face. “None of this is fair! You leaving wasn’t fair! Me finding you like that wasn’t fair! But Sera—” His voice cracked. “Emma means nothing. She never has. She never will.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Then believe this.”
His mouth crashed against mine.
Not gentle. Not careful. Desperate and raw and absolutely devastating.
I tried to push him away. My hands shoved at his chest. But he held tighter. Kissed deeper. Poured three years of longing into this single moment.
And God help me, I kissed him back.
My resistance crumbled. My hands stopped pushing and started clutching. Fisting in his soaked shirt. Pulling him closer even as my brain screamed to run.
He tasted like rain and whiskey and home.
When he finally pulled back, we were both gasping.
“I never stopped.” His forehead pressed against mine. “Not for one second. Not one day. Every woman I saw—every face in every crowd—I was looking for you.”
“Damien—”
“I locked you in that hotel because I was terrified.” The confession tumbled out. “Terrified you’d run. Terrified I’d lose you again. Terrified that if I let you go for even one second, you’d disappear and I’d spend another three years searching.”
His hands trembled against my face. “Please don’t leave again.”
“I can’t stay.” The words tore out of me. “You saw them! Adrian hates me! Lily’s terrified of me! They have Emma and they don’t need—”
“They need their mother.” His voice was fierce now. Final. “Not Emma. You. They need YOU.”
“But what if—”
“Mama?”
The word cut through the rain like a bell.
My entire body went rigid.
That voice. Small. Young. Achingly familiar.
I turned slowly. So slowly.
And there they were.
Adrian and Lily. Standing on the front lawn. Both soaked to the bone. Their clothes plastered to their small frames.
Lily’s pigtails hung limp. Adrian’s glasses were streaked with rain.
But they were there.
They’d followed us.
“Mama?” Lily said again. Louder this time. Her voice breaking on the word.
