Chapter 191: Chapter 191
Damien’s POV

The SUV rolled through increasingly questionable neighborhoods.

Streetlights flickered. Graffiti covered every available surface. The kind of place where smart people didn’t ask questions and cops didn’t patrol after dark.

Perfect setting for an underground fight club.

“You sure about this?” I asked Lucas for the third time.

“Absolutely.” He navigated around a pothole that could swallow a small car. “Trust me. This place is legendary.”

“Legendary for what? Hepatitis?”

“For talent.” He shot me a grin. “The best fighters go here. No rules. No regulations. Just pure skill.”

I stared out the window at a homeless man peeing against a dumpster. “Yeah. Real classy.”

“Since when do you care about classy?”

He had a point. I’d spent the last three years hunting rogues in places that made this look like a country club.

Lucas pulled into what looked like an abandoned parking lot behind a warehouse. Two dozen cars were already there, ranging from beat-up Hondas to Maseratis that cost more than most people’s houses.

Interesting crowd.

“Masks,” Lucas said, reaching into the glove compartment.

He pulled out two simple black masks the kind that covered the upper half of your face. Nothing fancy. Just enough to hide our identities.

I raised an eyebrow. “Seriously?”

“It’s common here. Lots of people don’t want to be recognized.” He slipped his on. “Besides, you think showing up as the Alpha is a good idea? These people operate outside pack law for a reason.”

Fair point.

I put on the mask. It felt ridiculous. Like I was headed to a masquerade ball instead of an illegal fight.

“How do I look?” Lucas asked.

“Like an idiot.”

“Perfect. You too.” He opened his door. “Let’s go.”

The warehouse entrance was guarded by a man the size of a small building. He looked us over with dead eyes, noted our masks without comment, and waved us through.

No questions. No metal detectors. No security beyond that one guy.

The place operated on a simple principle if you caused trouble, you disappeared. Permanently.

Inside was chaos.

Bodies packed together in the semi-darkness. The smell hit me immediatelysweat, blood, alcohol, and something else. Something wild.

Wolves. Several of them. Mixed in with the humans.

My wolf stirred, recognizing our kind.

*Easy,* I told Alex. *We’re just watching.*

The space was bigger than it looked from outside. A proper boxing ring sat in the center, surrounded by tiered seating that rose up on all sides. Overhead lights cast harsh shadows. The whole thing felt like some twisted Roman colosseum.

Money changed hands everywhere I looked. Bets being placed. Deals being made. This wasn’t just about fighting. This was business.

“Back row,” Lucas said, pointing up. “Best view. Less chance of getting blood on us.”

We climbed the stairs, weaving between people who barely glanced at us. The masks made us invisible. Just two more anonymous spectators in a crowd of them.

The back row was nearly empty. From up here, I could see everything. The ring. The crowd. The exits. Old habits.

“So,” I said, pulling out my phone. “How long until something happens?”

“Should be starting soon.” Lucas was practically vibrating with excitement. “I heard tonight’s main event is supposed to be amazing.”

I grunted, already bored. My phone had seventeen unread emails. All of them probably important. All of them more interesting than watching humans beat each other up.

“Oh!” Lucas leaned forward. “I forgot to mention. One of tonight’s fighters is a woman.”

I didn’t look up from my phone. “So?”

“A human woman.”

“Still not interested.”

“Dude, she’s supposed to be incredible. Undefeated in her last six fights. Took down guys twice her size.”

I scrolled through an email about territory disputes. “Good for her.”

“I’m serious! People are talking about her like she’s the next big thing. Some kind of prodigy.”

“Lucas.” I set my phone down and looked at him. “Why do I care about a human woman who can fight?”

“Because you need fighters! For the pack! For training!”

“We need wolves. Specifically, female wolves who can train other female wolves.” I picked my phone back up. “A human woman, no matter how good she is, can’t do that.”

“Why not?”

“Because she’s human.” I said it slowly, like explaining to a child. “She can’t shift. Can’t demonstrate proper forms for wolf combat. Can’t survive sparring with actual wolves. She’d be useless.”

Lucas opened his mouth to argue, but I cut him off.

“Even if she’s the greatest human fighter who ever lived, she has no place in pack training. The physical differences alone make it impossible.”

Lucas slumped in his chair, disappointed. “You’re being stubborn.”

“I’m being realistic.”

The crowd noise swelled. People started moving toward their seats. The prelim fights must be starting.

I went back to my emails. Budget reports. Incident logs. A note from Adrian’s teacher about his improved grades.

That one made me pause. Adrian was doing better. Finally starting to engage with school again. Maybe things were looking up.

“First fight!” Lucas nudged me. “You should watch.”

“I’ll watch if something interesting happens.” I scrolled to the next email. “Until then, I’m working.”

Lucas sighed but didn’t push further.

The bell rang. The crowd roared. Two fighters entered the ring, but I didn’t bother looking up. The sound told me everything I needed to know enthusiastic amateurs. Lots of movement. Not much skill.

“That guy’s footwork is terrible,” Lucas muttered.

“Mmm.”

“Seriously, my grandmother could dodge better than that.”

“Your grandmother’s been dead for ten years.”

“Exactly my point.”

The crowd’s energy shifted. A wave of anticipation rippled through the warehouse.

“Oh shit,” Lucas breathed. “This is it. Main event.”

“Great,” I said, not looking up.

Lucas grabbed my arm. “Damien, seriously. You should watch this.”
