Chapter 523: The Past_Part 1
After helping Evenly make her sleeping bedroll in the living room, where she would sleep with her babies since there was no other warm room ready for her, Belle made her way to their own bedroom. Rohan had mentioned building another part of the house for Evenly and her twins, but until then, she would have to make do with a bedroll, as the other bedrooms upstairs had no furniture or a warm fireplace to keep it cozy.

They couldn’t discuss expanding the space now, not with Rohan’s condition and the harsh winter pressing down on them, so until things were expanded, they would all manage this way, and thankfully, Evenly had no problem sleeping in the living room.

For the fourth time that evening, Belle felt a pang of guilt and pain for her friend whenever she recalled the depth of grief in her red eyes whenever the mention of Rav came up.

I hope she heals from it, Belle thought, walking up the narrow steps to their room.

After everything Evenly had shared about her life and Rohan, Belle felt her heart ease at the thought of lying next to him and sharing a room. But at the thought of being kissed by him again, a warmth spread through her body and her hands grew clammy with nervousness. His kiss had been delicious and addictive in a way she wouldn’t mind experiencing again.

Was he asleep, or would he be waiting for her to come to bed? Belle wondered, stopping outside the door. Chiding herself to stop acting like a shy virgin when she was already a mother of two, she reached out to open the door, but pulled her hand back again.

Virgin, her body might not be, but her mind certainly was! Though she had lain next to him for three nights while he was unconscious, it was a completely different matter to lie next to his conscious body!

Belle took a deep breath and finally opened the door, only to find that her bedridden husband was no longer on the bed. She stopped short in her tracks. With how their children were sleeping in the middle of the bed, taking the entire space Rohan had laid in before, along with the blanket, and with the lamplight illuminating the room, it was obvious he had been gone for a while now.

Where had Rohan gone? she wondered, growing certain he had not come downstairs, as she had been sitting with Evenly for a long time in the living room, where anyone who wanted to go out would have to pass through. Ereves had instructed her to keep him resting in bed, yet it seemed he had slipped away right under her nose without making a sound.

But what baffled Belle even more was where he would go without telling her. Was this something that happened often, him sneaking out of the house behind her back? Had she been accustomed to this before losing her memories, or was this new?

Belle was about to turn and search for him, perhaps in the bathhouse and the empty second bedroom, when she suddenly heard a crack at the bedroom window. She turned toward it. The window slowly opened, letting in a gush of cold wind that flickered the lamplight and stirred Angel on the bed. Then she noticed a blue-haired head peek through the pink curtains, followed by the body, and in came the man she had been looking for.

Snow clung to his disheveled, untamed long hair and nightwear as he turned quickly to close the window, cursing under his breath at the burning pain in his back and the stiff muscles around the bullet wound.

Seeing him entering back through the same window he had obviously sneaked out of, displeasure settled inside Belle at the thought that he had no sense to stay in bed and had climbed out in such treacherous weather, in his condition of all things. She noticed how the nightshirt clung to his back, evidence that he had aggravated the wounds she had worked so hard to keep from bleeding while he’d been unconscious.

She placed her hands on her hips and stepped toward him as he swiveled around after closing the window, coming face-to-face with an angry wife demanding, “Where have you been at this hour? Didn’t I tell you to stay in bed and not get up?”

Rohan, aware of her presence but not expecting a scolding, was taken aback by the temper in her eyes and the displeasure tightening her lips. It was a rare sight, his wife angry and showing temper, and he watched her, fighting the urge to smile. But when he didn’t answer fast enough, she flared at him.

“Has the snow deafened your hearing, Rohan? I asked you a question. Where are you coming from?” She glared up at him, and the faint amusement on his face immediately vanished, replaced by a grimace of pain. His back was hurting unbearably; he had not only gone out but had even flown using his wings.

“Ouch, that hurts!” Rohan groaned, bending over and placing his hands on his knees to keep from collapsing under the pain, and also to escape the full force of the temper blazing in his wife’s eyes, which he wasn’t used to and didn’t know how to soften at this moment.

Belle noticed the dark liquid dripping from his back onto the wooden floor and, momentarily forgetting her anger, rushed to assist him. “You’re bleeding again,” she gasped, helping him walk forward and lie down on his stomach on the rug.

Knowing she couldn’t turn him to remove the shirt, Belle retrieved a dagger she had seen in a drawer and used it to tear his nightshirt, revealing his back. The wounds were surprisingly healing and not as fearsome as they once looked. The skin around them had begun to mend itself, but the bullet holes were still oozing blood, a result of the strain he had put on himself.

Belle moved up and down the room, retrieving things to clean the wound and stop the bleeding, without uttering a word to Rohan, who had disregarded her warnings and gone out despite her telling him not to leave the room so the healing won’t be interfered with. What could be so important that he would sneak out to do? She wondered, realizing how much her mood had been ruined just by walking in and finding him gone from the room.

She felt his intense eyes on her as she moved around, but Belle was now determined to ignore him. It was only when she had finished stopping the bleeding and was standing up to remove the bloody sheet and torn shirt that she felt warm fingers wrap around her wrist, pulling her gently back down to sit on the rug.
