Chapter 500: Demon versus Reaper_Part 1
While the disaster went on in the world, in the land of the dead things were just as chaotic as they were in the living world. The reapers had lost all sense of order, for people were dying before their destined time and there were not enough reapers to take their souls. It had reached the point where all the elders had been forced to gather and find a way to stop the disaster and restore peace to the living world, as that would be the only way for the land of the dead to function according to time and order again.
The elders were currently sitting together in the high chamber, with a few reapers standing around them, waiting to hear what they would conclude about this catastrophe.
“We have to find a way to put a stop to this mass death happening, or in no time we will lose control over death,” said one of the elders to the other three.
“Has it been known where this demon is hiding and creating such chaos in the world?” questioned the first elder, who held the most power and had recently issued the order for Astral’s soul to be perished, as everything had begun because of that reaper. If the reaper had not gone against time in the past, none of this would have unfolded this way. That was why, the moment she died, he had ordered for her soul to be extinguished completely.
“It’s coming from the world of the demons, where we cannot reach. He is there, controlling everything,” reported one of the reapers who had been sent down to investigate and discover what was causing events that were never destined to happen nor written to occur. If something like this had been written in the destiny books, it wouldn’t have struck the reapers by surprise, and they would have been prepared for the consequences.
The demons and reapers had been great enemies since the beginning of time, as the dark demons cheat death, and anything that cheats death and lives far past its time were creatures reapers naturally disdained. Hearing that the chaos was coming from there, the elders knew they had no way to put a stop to it, as none of them had the ability to travel into that realm where demons had sealed it to stop any soul-taker from going in. The only reaper who could do so was the first Grim elder.
“If we don’t find a way to take the life of the demon doing this, things will soon fall out of our hands, Eden,” said the second elder to the first elder, who had gone silent upon hearing where the chaos came from. “You have to go there and take his soul yourself to stop him. Only you are powerful enough to enter the demon world.”
The elders were no longer soul takers, but when something threatened the balance of all realms, they were forced to step out of their world to fix it. There were four elders, and only the first one was stronger than any other Grim. That was why, when it came to decisions of this magnitude, they depended on the first Grim, who still wasn’t saying anything or agreeing to take on the mission of killing the demon.
“Eden, say something,” another elder exclaimed, but Eden’s skeleton-like fingers only kept tapping against the wooden arm of his seat.
Eden looked at the others from beneath his hood. They waited for his final word, waited for him to agree to go and stop the demon himself. But if they knew the real reason he hesitated, none of them would urge him to go. More than that, none of them would ever respect him again, nor would he keep his position as the first Grim.
He was about to speak, about to steer them toward another solution that did not involve him entering the demon world… when one of the Watchers rushed into the chamber and announced,
“We have a demon in our world. He says he’s here to see the elders, and anyone who tries to stop him will burn to dust.”
All the elders rose to their feet. “The audacity of this creature!” exclaimed the second elder, but even before the rest could speak, the demon in question came striding into the chamber like he was walking into his parlor room, a smile playing on his face as his eyes fell on the first elder.
“The audacity of you to take what belongs to my offspring,” he said to the second elder before letting his eyes trail to the first Grim. “Hello there, Eden, long time no see,” Ereves said with a nonchalant voice, and the elder’s skeleton-like fingers curled into fists.
“What brings you here, demon? How did you get a pass into the land of the dead?” Eden demanded, even though he knew exactly how the demon had obtained the pass to enter this world.
No one but the dead could come into this world without a pass. A pass was like a key to enter the world of the dead, but not just anyone could obtain or grant one, not even the reapers. Only the elders had the power to grant it. A pass not only gave someone the ability to enter this world but also allowed them to understand and speak the language for the duration of their stay.
Ereves arched a brow as he said, “Should I assume you ask me this because you are all right with me speaking when your friends are around? Or would you rather talk to me in private? I’m fine with any of the two. By the way, I never thought a pass given to me by a certain someone centuries ago would come in handy today.”
Ereves locked eyes with the elder Grime’s gold eyes. Though the Grim didn’t have a face to show expression, the demon could tell he was panicking, knowing that if he were to talk about how Eden had once given him a pass in exchange for something long ago, he would not only lose his position as an elder but also earn a punishment that would perish him.
Eden, understanding and knowing what Ereves meant, spoke to the others without looking away from the cunning demon. “Leave us be. The meeting is over for now. I need to deal with this sinner.”
Ereves let out a dry laugh. “Sinner indeed. At least I didn’t get to my high and mighty position by lying.”
“Leave us!” Eden snapped at the other elders who were lingering, as they were curious which of the elders had granted a pass to a demon. They looked towards Eden and then began to leave the chamber as his words carried more authority in this world.
After they left the chamber, Eden demanded, “What do you want, demon? I thought we made an agreement that you would never bother me?”
Ereves rolled his eyes. “I made no such agreement, bonehead. I remember you clearly being the one to tell me that our deal would end there, but I didn’t say a word and simply let you go.”
“Do not call me that disregarding name. I am an elder now and have more powers than I had then,” Eden warned, but that only made Ereves answer with a challenge in his voice.
“Bonehead. You were nothing but bone when I removed your hood. The name suits you well, and I can tell from those bony fingers of yours that you are still nothing but bones.” A smile pulled at his face, and that grin gnawed at the elder, but he couldn’t do anything.
“What do you want?” Eden questioned, not wanting to be reminded of what he had gone through as a reaper before getting this position as the first Grim.
