Chapter 484: The reaper’s message
“Sofia is inside my belly. How can Sofia understand now that I didn’t mean to eat her, papa? I want to vomit her real quick, but vomit doesn’t want to come.”
Had this been under normal circumstances, Rohan would have laughed at his son’s savage yet innocent remarks, but it was with a strong sheer of will that he kept himself calm, without showing how worried he was about Angel carrying the infection of the rogue.
The infection of the rogue only happened to certain kinds of creatures who had strong immunity to the venom, but not enough to fight off the corruption. Instead of turning them completely rogue or allowing the corruption to spread to their heart, it only affected one part of the body, which caused the rogue side to be triggered whenever they became hungry, just like a half-rogue. However, if they got bitten again by a rogue, it would heighten the infection into a full-blown corruption, just like how it had happened to Rohan in the past.
Rohan only forced a smile as he pulled off the boy’s shirt. “Sofia’s soul will understand that you ate her because you were hungry. Now, let me see your arm.” Rohan removed the arm from the sleeve, and he cursed under his breath at what he saw.
Angel looked down at his arm as well and said quietly, “Uncle Rav bite me like that. What happened to him, papa? Why did he bite and tear my hand?”
Angel’s arm was not healing at the normal fast pace at all. The large missing flesh was still gone, and the wound had turned red around the bite mark with black spots that showed the signs of the rogue infection. Though his heart still beat normally, Rohan could sense that the bite had already affected him in the way he would have wanted to avoid. The fact that Angel had turned rogue enough to tear Sofia to pieces and eat from her was a clear indication that he had gotten the infection.
“Will he also turn?” came Evenly’s quiet question, her eyes not hiding the fear in them. Rav would not forgive himself if anything happened to Angel, and she feared even the duke might want to take it out on him.
Rohan’s fist tightened at his side. “If you mean like the way Rav turned, the answer is no. But he will turn whenever he becomes hungry and then become normal when he gets full.” That was how his own condition had also been in the past. But what really made Rohan angry right now was the fact that all this could have been avoided had he killed Rav the moment he realized his heart was turning corrupt. Yet, he hadn’t had the heart for it, and because he had believed they would find a way to help cure him.
Even now, he still couldn’t bring himself to put the blame on Rav for biting his son and giving him the rogue infection.
“Papa, I don’t want to eat another person again,” Angel muttered, looking up at his father’s eyes, whose face had grown grim.
“You won’t. We will find a way to stop that from happening once I find your mother,” Rohan said, to which Angel’s brows pulled together and he asked,
“Where is mama?”
Evenly, who was standing awkwardly to the side, unable to ask how they would help Rav after seeing the bite had also affected Angel, heard the boy’s question, and she realized she hadn’t set eyes on Belle since last night, when all this had happened.
Rohan was parting his lips to speak when a sound came from beside the fireplace in the room, causing them to look in that direction, where a folded coat suddenly dropped to the floor out of nowhere.
Rohan slowly put his son on his feet, making sure not to touch his injured arm, and then he walked around the bed to the fireplace. He crouched down, taking the black coat in his gloved hands, a deep frown forming on his face when suddenly something dropped from inside the coat to the floor.
Rohan’s eyes fell on the white-stoned bracelet he had given his wife, now lying on the floor. He picked it up, his head turning around as if trying to find who had dropped it there. Cordelia had not carried any of these when she was posing as his wife, she didn’t even know about the bracelet.
It had been with Isa when she was replaced. Rohan’s heart gave a leap, and even before he could wonder how this had gotten here, another paper fell again in front of him. Rohan automatically reached for it. He unfolded it and saw that it was a map, and on the map, a certain place was circled with charcoal.
He read the map to the circled location and realized it was close to the border where the humans were said to have invaded Nightbrook and the vampire soldiers were headed to fight. What could this mean? He looked at the coat that has his initials on it and the becelet.
Could this mean Belle was there?! How had she sent this to him?
“Papa, who is that?” came Angel’s question as he stared at a spot close to where his father was looking down at the map with deep concentration, figuring out immediately that it was a message meant for him, to tell him where his woman was.
Rohan got up to his feet, bringing the coat to his nose and smelling Belle’s blood on it, which made him tighten his fingers around the fabric.
“Papa, he is talking to me,” said Angel again, and Rohan finally turned to the boy to see him looking at the empty spot next to him.
“Who is talking to you?” Rohan asked with narrowed eyes.
Angel pointed with his good hand. “He said he is Kuhn. But this is not the Kuhn I know, papa. He say to tell you to go to Astral because Astral needs your help,” Angel relayed the words of the creature in the room that was staring at him and talking to him. Though the creature was speaking another language, Angel understood it so well, it was the language his mother speaks with Kuhn whenever he was around. But the Kuhn he knew and remembered used to be smaller with round head, but this one was big and tall with oval hooded head shape.
‘Young demon, tell big demon to go and meet Astral in the place in the map. Astral in trouble and baby is coming soon and needs big demon to get out. I don’t have many time to spend with mortal, tell him my messages, and tell him people will die in three hours in the border.’ Kuhn said to the only person who could see him, as he carried part of his mother within his body, part that came from the land of the dead.
Kuhn hadn’t even thought the boy would be able to see him at first, he had intended to drop the things and the map he had circled and then leave until Angel turned around and looked him straight and asked his father who he was. Now Kuhn realized it was far easier to tell the boy to tell his father the message.
Angel told his father exactly what Kuhn had told him before he asked, “Who is Astral, papa?”
“It’s your mama, Max. I know where she is now!”
Rohan could no longer wait upon hearing where Belle was and her condition. The west border was a dangerous place to be in at this time of crisis.
“Mama, my real mama?” Angel asked with wide eyes, already knowing the one he had been living with wasn’t his real mother.
“Yes. Your real mother, my real wife.”
Rohan didn’t have much time left. He turned to look at Evenly, who was staring in shock, having not seen what the boy had been talking to. She had only seen things appear out of thin air and fall in front of the duke, but hearing this part of the conversation, she also realized that Belle was in danger, being on the west border.
“She’s having the baby already? You need to get to her and take her away from the borders,” Evenly said, not knowing who she should worry about more in this situation. First, it was the man she loved, then the boy she had taken like her own, and now her friend. How had she even gotten there? Evenly wondered to herself.
Rohan didn’t have much time to explain things, but he also couldn’t leave the people here unprotected. “The war might take time to get here, Evenly, but I need you to take care of Angel. And if the war reaches the cities before I get my wife back, go and ask Rav for the directions to the underground house and hide there. But do not let him leave that room. To put your mind at ease, Isabelle can cure him if I find her in time.”
Rohan slipped her bracelet into his pocket and then touched Angel’s hair. “I’ll be back with your mother. Stay with Evenly. Keep blood beside you for him,” he told Evenly, and without waiting for anyone to speak again, Rohan went out through the window, opening his wings and flying into the gray sky.
