Married To The Mad Vampire Lord - Chapter 478
Chapter 478: Find a way out
While Rohan went searching the establishments belonging to Cordelia, his wife was in a far different one that wasn’t even exactly inside Nightbrook.
Belle became more restless than ever as time ticked away. Time was an important thing to every reaper, who lived by it and kept track of it, as every second people died across the world and reapers moved to carry them away.
Belle had missed her chance at taking a set of souls across yesterday, and her clock was already ticking with a red glow, which meant she had missed the time for five people. To make things worse than they already were, she had not been taken out of the cell to wash or eat like the others in the establishment, per Master Kent’s orders.
If it weren’t for her cellmate, who many times sneaked food under her dress to bring to her, Belle knew she would have died of starvation. Despite how the slaves were treated like animals, they were not starved and were given good food, as good, healthy food meant healthy blood. However, the crushed bread and steaks brought to her had lost their appeal by the time Andrea brought them to her to eat.
If Belle wasn’t so hungry that her body shook from it, she wouldn’t have found herself eating something wrapped in a cloth and crushed under the armpit to reach her. She was eating not only for herself but for the baby, who she had noticed this morning was beginning to act strangely in her belly.
It had been five days now that she was here, and there were no signs that her husband would find her. Seeing that Cordelia had probably succeeded in tricking her husband, Belle knew her escape now fell into her own hands. But how could one escape when she was left inside the cell, never being taken out like the others?
Being in the cell was killing her. The cold was unbearable at night, so much that even Rohan’s coat, which no longer carried his scent but the smell of the cell, could not keep the cold from her bones, which turned numb by morning. Her wounds from where she had been flogged had scabbed, and movement made them tight and peel off.
By now, Belle knew Rav’s condition had worsened from how his time was going crazy in her palm whenever she turned it to his name.
Furthermore, she had woken up early this morning to a strong smell of death in the air. Belle had thought nothing of it at first and believed the vampires here had probably killed another stubborn slave, but that wasn’t the case. By evening reapers had begun to swarm the establishment, walking aimlessly around and waiting for the time of the people they were here to take to reach it’s end.
She had seen ten different reapers so far walk down the long corridors of the cell room and one in particular kept coming and going from thier cell room, which was a sign someone in this cellroom was bound to die along with many people in the establishment soon. What she didn’t know was whether it was her or Andrea or even her baby, who would die and be taken by this one reaper who kept coming and going.
When she first noticed the reaper, her blood had ran cold as she knew what it meant for it to come into their cell instead of walking around like the rest. Her restlessness grew with the fact that she didn’t know what was about to cause a mass death in this place as this much reapers only meant that.
“Are you certain this husband of yours wasn’t the one who gave you into this place because he doesn’t want you anymore?” Andrea had asked last evening as they were about to sleep, for even up until now she didn’t believe that Belle was the wife of the duke, who many had heard rumors about but had never seen, the duke who had once been a prince who killed his parents.
The way Belle talked about him was different from what the young woman had heard. Hence, she didn’t believe it, because almost every woman in here had been sold by their partners or husband, and if this duke had not come until now, like Belle kept saying he would, Andrea could tell her cellmate was either deluding herself or didn’t want to accept reality yet, like many others.
Belle clutched Rohan’s coat to her body as she replied quietly, “He’s not like others. He would never have sold me. I was taken by a vile woman who wants him for herself. If he doesn’t find his way to me, I will have to find my way to him and our son.”
Andrea sighed softly, then said, “Yeah, the Angel you always talk about. I can tell you’re almost due, with that stomach getting so low. You should save your strength for the ordeal of labor rather than worrying about escaping. There is no way out.”
“How can you know there is no way out when you have never tried to escape?” Belle asked with a knitted brow, for the woman’s pessimistic behavior was the kind that would make anyone want to give up. She had no positive thoughts of ever leaving this place.
“Just like you, I tried to find my way out the first few days I was brought here, but I ended up in the red room instead, where my hair was cut and I was beaten senseless. I have never even seen the gate around here, not to mention escaping through it. As you must have noticed, you can’t climb those high walls. Quit trying.”
Belle had tried to get the other woman to help her figure things out and plan an escape, but Andrea was too comfortable in this rat hole of a place and too scared of what the wardens would do if they got caught to even try, or consider, Belle’s words about escaping before Master Kent returned to business.
She had to leave this place, not only because of Master Kent and the souls she had to send back, but also before this baby came. She wanted her baby born in a clean, safe place, with Rohan there beside her, just like he had been for Angel’s birth, not in a place like this, where her child would be taken from her, and where the smell of death was so thick she could hardly breathe.
She had wanted to ignore it, but Andrea was right about her belly going down, and she had given birth before, so she knew the signs of it coming. However, Belle needed to gather her strength first, she needed her body to hold on a little longer, without contractions slowing her down, so she could do what she had been planning since last night.
“Have you ever bothered to count how many guards are posted outside when you go for your morning routines?” Belle asked Andrea, who pursed her chapped lips and shook her head.
“No, I have never done that. Why?”
“I need to know how many there are. Can you help me do that when you go out in the morning for your daily routines?” Belle whispered, her voice low so their words wouldn’t be carried away. If only she was taken out like the others, she would have done the counting and planning herself.
“What do you plan to do if you know how many?”
“I told you, I won’t stay here. Something bad is about to happen, and we need to leave. The vampires are not hard to kill once you know where to hit them. Their core, what keeps them alive, is within their dead heart. Once you pierce it with the right weapon, they die without leaving a body behind. If you help me, I can find us a way out.”
Living with Rohan for two years had taught her things she never should have known under normal circumstances. Whenever they couldn’t sleep at night, they would lie in bed with him teaching her things she never imagined she would need one day. The first thing he ever taught her was how to kill vampires, and the second, how one should never let themselves remain helpless in any situation.
