Chapter 477: On one condition
The demon king let out a laugh, “You know, you are so much like me in some ways that I can’t help but be proud even when you insult me and call me shameless and senseless. You pushed me into becoming this way, son. If you were in my place, you’d do the same thing I did. All I ask for is for you to come home and see what our enemies had done to our kind.”
Was the creature not listening to him, or did he have cotton stuffed in his ears? Rohan wondered, as the demon’s words made it clear he wasn’t actually paying attention when Rohan said his home was Isabelle and that she was the reason he still had life in him. It was just like how many parents chose to see only what they believed was right, but fortunately, Rohan never considered the likes of him a father.
Rohan knew the demon was a creature who cared for no one but himself and his desires. Many times he had tried not to worry about the demon because any move to harm Belle would also endanger Angel. If the vampire king learned they had a son, Rohan’s and Angel’s lives would be at stake, this demon wanted them in his world and would not want them dead.
That had given Rohan the belief that he had more time before he would find a way to deal with the demon, he had thought they would have finished with the troubles in Nightbrook and moved to the mountains so he could think of ways to deal with the creature who had sired him and get him off his back.
Never had Rohan expected the demon would use Cordelia this way to get rid of Belle from their lives.
“Where is she keeping her?” Rohan asked, not wanting to hear anything else the creature had to say anymore, as it seemed no matter what Rohan say, the creature wouldn’t hear it with those big delusions filled in his head.
“Didn’t I tell you once, young one?” the demon king said. “You would come to me yourself. She is far from you. If you want to know where she is, I will tell you, if you agree to my conditions.”
“What conditions?” Rohan asked, not because he would ever consider doing what the demon demanded, but because he was impatient and curious at the same time. He couldn’t wait to get to Belle and be assured of her safety.
“Give me your son.” The demon’s words fell like a demand to hand over a cattle instead of one’s own flesh and blood. Rohan couldn’t have been more stunned, though deep down, he had seen it coming all along.
Ereves had arranged this plan long before including the vampiress in his scheme. He knew there was a big chance Cordelia would fail him and not complete what she was sent for, which was why he had bound her with clauses in the contract: she must not kill the human or hurt the little boy in anyway. Just as he expected, the foolish woman had failed him, but her failure did not ruin his plans, which he had long made.
He had made sure there was no way for Rohan to get the human without his help. Desperate moments call for desperate measures, and from his observation, Rohan loved his son less than he loved his wife. Sacrificing the one you love less to keep the other you love the most would be the easier choice. He would let Rohan have the human only if Rohan gave him the boy.
Rohan let out a humorless laugh that died quickly as his expression hardened. “You must think you’ve trapped me in a corner where I’ll agree to your conditions, Ereves, don’t you? Give away my son for my wife, hmm.”
The demon king was not used to hearing his own name uttered so disrespectfully but he overlooked it and said,
“You have another child on the way with her, you can replace the boy easily with it, and being half demon, you have many more seeds to sire in the future. You can have ten more if you desire. Agree to this and I will protect you through this upcoming war. The war will be big, and it’s approaching faster than any of the vampires believe. I will make sure your family and woman is safe and no harm befalls her again. Isn’t that what you want? To always keep her safe?” the demon whispered like a small devil, tempting a man’s mind.
It was true the war would be big, but no one knew it better than the demon who had eyes everywhere. The humans were already well prepared for the night creatures and in no less than a week it would hit. The night creatures might believe they had the upper hands, but the humans had created something they wouldn’t be able to counter. And the demon king told Rohan to make him see just how in a disadvantage he would be in if he continued to act stubborn and wanting to keep the boy for himself.
“You are one desperate son of a bitch, Ereves. And I want you to always remember what I will say now. Angel Maxwell Dagon is my son, mine and Isabelle’s alone. I won’t give him to a creature who doesn’t know the first thing about being a father. You missed your chance to be one to me; I won’t let you take mine. I will find my wife myself, and by hell, if I find any harm has come to her, I won’t stop until I have you hundred feet below the ground.” Rohan shut the link and flew into the night to begin his search in Cordelia’s properties and establishments, as those were the places she would most likely be keeping her.
In the back of his mind, he processed the information about the war. He needed to find Belle, have her complete her last mission, and get his family out of this damn mess.
