Chapter 474: “No… please.”
“No… please, no. Don’t kill him. There must be a way to help him. He’s still alive, we can find a way to save him. Please!” Evenly cried out just as Rohan’s fingers began to tighten around Rav’s neck. She could see the strain in Rohan’s face too, the pain of a man forced to do something he didn’t want to. Even though she was aware it was the only way out, she wouldn’t be able to accept that. No, not her Rav!
Evenly’s pleas broke through the air as she begged Rohan.
She held Angel against her with one arm and pressed the other to her stomach, her fingers digging into her dress as her eyes stung with the realization that their child might never know who had fathered him. “Don’t kill him for me. Please don’t kill him… we will go away from here, and he won’t hurt anyone. I will find a way to cure him…” Tears rolled from her eyelashes down her cheeks as she bit her lower lip, trying to hold back her sobs while she begged.
She didn’t care if she had to search the whole earth for a cure, she would find one and do her best. She couldn’t let him be killed like this. She just couldn’t…
“You will only be killing yourself. It’s too late, Lady Evenly. You can’t help him. I’ve tried to wake him, but his heart is failing with every second I waste from taking his life,” Rohan said quietly, looking into the rogue’s eyes and feeling himself being torn apart inside as well. But he was the kind of person who wouldn’t let his emotions get in the way of what ought to be done. And killing Rav was something that had to be done, or the lives of everyone here would be at risk.
So this would be it, Rav? I should have never saved you fifty years ago had I known it would come to this. I should never have let you love again or be loved… I am sorry. I hope you forgive me for it in your afterlife. Rest in peace.
“No!! Please don’t!” Evenly put Angel down on the ground and lunged forward to hold Rohan’s hand that had grown claws and was about to go into his chest. She grabbed the hand with all her strength and pulled it back, shaking from heartbroken sobs that tore off her very soul.
“P-please… d-don’t do this to him! Rav… come back to me…” Evenly’s voice broke as she turned her tear-soaked eyes to the rogue thrashing in the duke’s grip, snarling like a caged wild animal. Her heart shattered at the sight of him up close. “D-don’t leave me like this… y-you promised… you said you’d build our house… and make me a m-mansion I’d love, with our baby…” Her words came out between sobs, trembling and breathless. “You… you told me you’d wake up with me every morning… to k-kiss my eyelids, b-because I told you I liked it when you did that…”
Her chest heaved as tears streamed down her face. “A-are you… going to break your promise to me now? L-leave me when we haven’t even s-started half our life together?” she cried, her voice cracking as forming words became hard with the choking emotions. “Ch-Christian… you p-promised me…!”
Rohan, who was looking away as he was giving the couple their last moment, turned his head back as the thrashing suddenly stopped. He noticed the cloudy rogue eyes flicking from white to their usual light red. His snarling also stopped but turned into painful groans of someone fighting pain internally. Rohan released his neck, and Rav fell to the ground clutching his hand against his chest and coughing out more blood.
“Rav!” Evenly began to go down to her knees beside him, but Rohan pulled her back by grabbing her arm. “Don’t go near him, he can lose control at any time. Carry my son inside and I will take care of him,” he ordered her firmly as he reached out and grabbed Rav by the arm.
“Wh-what are you going to do to him?” Evenly cried, reaching out to pull Rav to her side as his eyes had turned back to red but his face looked haggard and his body weak. He could barely stand on his feet as he was roughly pulled up by the duke.
“I have to lock him up for now so he can’t hurt anyone.” Until he found his wife, Rohan added in his mind, knowing now that his wife was in danger somewhere, and the sooner he found her, the faster it would be for everyone.
Evenly wanted to protest against Rav being locked up and was parting her lips to speak to the duke when Rav himself, who had fought with everything in him to suppress the corruption at her words, reached out and grabbed her hand, clasping his fingers tightly around hers, interlocking them and making her turn to him with tear-soaked eyelashes.
“Rav…” Evenly whispered.
“Listen to him… I am a danger to everyone… especially you. Don’t worry about me…look after yourself.” He coughed, bending down to grab his chest, and Rohan, who had too much to do and little time for it, hurled Rav over his shoulder as he couldn’t walk, and he sped away before Evenly could stop him again.
Evenly watched him take Rav away and felt a pressing need to find out where he would be locked, just in case the duke decided not to tell her. One thing was for sure, though, she wouldn’t let him be killed, rogue or not.
She quickly reached out to carry Angel and was already on her feet, ready to follow them, when Rohan appeared in front of her again, without Rav, and took his son from her arms.
“Where did you lock him?” she asked, handing the boy over. Rohan carried Angel gently, tucking him carefully in his arms.
“The fifth room on the second floor, no one should go there until it’s safe. Especially you,” Rohan said firmly. “He’s fighting the corruption, and any scent of flesh could tempt him. Be careful around him for now; he’s no longer the Rav you know, but a hungry savage.”
With that, Rohan sped away to tend to Angel’s arm and then to deal with Cordelia, whom he had knocked out in his room.
