Chapter 461: Suspicious_Part 1
The deeper Nightbrook sank into the panic of an upcoming war, the busier Rohan’s life became. Things had grown so difficult that he barely had the free time he once held in his hands.
It had finally been confirmed that Aragonia had joined hands with Bimmerville, and the vampire king was not only furious but shaken by the news. For years, he had tried to avoid war with Bimmerville by sending them treasures that made their land one of the richest. With Aragonia, he had signed a peace treaty to avoid any future conflict. But it seemed there was no way out of it now, as the humans had turned against them.
What worried the vampire king the most was the fact that the humans had weapons and other things capable of attacking his lands. Even if they didn’t succeed in killing every single vampire, they could still wipe out almost all of them. Four kingdoms against one wasn’t something to be taken lightly, and though the vampires had the Gaggers, it wasn’t a guarantee they would win this big war.
It was during that wave of anger that the king demanded for Isabelle Dagon to be brought to the royal castle immediately, to be kept a captive for the contract the humans had gone against.
However, knowing that it wasn’t the real Isabelle living as Rohan’s wife, the demon king, who had ears and eyes everywhere, acted quickly, stepping into things and appearing before the vampire king, who had just given the orders to one of the Gaggers.
“Hello. We finally meet again, Zion,” the demon king said with a smile from the shadows of the vampire king’s chamber.
“What do you want from me this time?” King Zion asked with a frown. He was already burdened with too many problems to waste his energy on a being who blended so easily with the darkness.
“More like how can I assist you in your time of need,” the demon king drawled. “I don’t want anything from you, but you will want something from me.”
King Zion’s eyes narrowed with interest. “You can help me?”
Changing the vampire king’s mind about taking Isabelle was easy for the demon king, who had once saved Zion’s life from Rohan. It didn’t take much persuasion before the king agreed not to take the human as a hostage.
“And what will I get in return for this favor?” King Zion asked.
“My help,” the demon king replied smoothly.
He promised to aid the vampire king in winning the coming war, on one condition: the woman would be left to him. Since the vampires had discovered that the humans planned to attack them, Zion agreed that launching their attack ahead of time was the only way to protect their kind. And with the demon king’s promise of help, and even showing him evidence that he had the powers to help them, the deal was sealed.
In truth, the demon king had no intention of helping in a war that had nothing to do with his own realm, but he couldn’t let them harm the woman serving him by carrying his son’s offspring. Until Cordelia was done with what they had agreed upon in their contract, no one would touch a hair on her head in that form.
Soon, word reached Rohan, who was constantly lingering in the royal castle, that his wife might be dragged into the war. But for some reason, the king had changed his mind and ordered to let her be.
However, troops had already been gathered and were preparing to attack Aragonia, with five of the Gaggers leading the first troop. The second troop would go for Bimmerville. They divided the troops, sending them into the lands they had heard were preparing to attack them.
Yet, enough soldiers were left behind in case of a surprise assault on Nightbrook, and the king made it clear that if such a thing happened, Rohan would join them. When Rohan was told this, he said nothing and only listened with a blank expression in his dark eyes, looking up at the king standing on the balcony above, surrounded by a few Gaggers.
“You may leave for now,” the king commanded, “and make sure your senses are on alert for any message or news of the attacks’ outcome. All our commanders and generals are leading their armies, you will lead the ones here if it comes to protecting our borders.”
Rohan didn’t say a word to the king, nor did he acknowledge his presence. He merely sighed, turned on his heels, and walked out of the great hall, leaving the royal officials murmuring among themselves about his arrogance toward their ruler. But he had far too much on his mind at that moment to care about what they said.
As long as no one dared to touch his woman, he had nothing to say to anyone. Nonetheless, Rohan couldn’t help but silently wonder what could have changed the vampire king’s mind from taking Belle as a hostage, when before now, he and his son had spoken of nothing else but how they would send her head to Aragonia if it was ever discovered that the humans had gone against the signed peace treaty.
One thing Rohan knew for sure, people didn’t change their minds that quickly unless they had something to gain from it, or the king was planning something entirely different. What Rohan hated most was being left in the dark. In the past, he never wasted time when he could easily compel anyone to get the truth, but ever since he started coming here, he had never been allowed near the king. They always kept him at a distance.
It seemed he would have to keep an extra watch on things from now on until the vampires lay their attacks.
Rohan returned home feeling immensely stressed about this damned war, already making plans for his family’s safety. If it weren’t for the souls Belle still had to return, it would have been the perfect opportunity to take them all away from Nightbrook before the chaos grew into something beyond control.
This wasn’t going to be a normal war between soldiers, civilians would be killed too. The best choice would have been to flee and let them fight each other, but he couldn’t yet think about that. He couldn’t afford for Isa to fail in her mission as a reaper.
These days, he barely had any time to spend with her. He left early in the morning and returned deep into the night, when she was already asleep. He himself could hardly sleep anymore. He spent most of his free hours in his study, making his own arrangements.
In a few days, he would have to take Belle to collect another set of souls that would bring them close to the end of soul collecting, Rohan thought as he walked toward the castle. But even before he opened the front door, he could hear the loud, heart-wrenching cry of his son echoing through the hall.
Angel rarely cried out loud, he was the kind of child who wept in silence, tears slipping down his cheeks without a sound. Hearing that voice now made Rohan’s brows draw tightly together, and he burst into the castle in a run.
He came to a sudden stop in the main hall, where Angel was being consoled by Rav and Evenly. The boy sat on Evenly’s lap despite her condition, while Rav gently stroked his hair, murmuring words of assurance. The few servants Rohan had assigned to the castle stood around looking pale with worry, some even trembling as they stared at his son.
Even before Rohan made his presence known to them, Angel turned and slid down Evenly’s lap and limped toward him.
Without thinking, Rohan bent and lifted his son into his arms, his eyes darkening at the strong smell of blood. The boy’s trousers were torn at the knees, soaked with blood, and his nightshirt was stained as well.
“Papa…!” Angel wrapped his small arms around his father’s neck, trembling and sobbing, his tears wetting Rohan’s collar.
