Chapter 427: The White witch_Part 1
“Really?” Rohan asked, looking at his smiling wife sitting on his lap on the edge of their bed, her arms wrapped around his neck as she shared good news he hadn’t expected he would be hearing this soon.

“Yes, they’re getting married. Evenly told me about it just this evening. She looked so happy, and we talked and planned. They’ll have the wedding once we settle in the cottage,” she told him delightfully, running her fingers through the strands of his long hair and trailing them down the sharp lines of his jaw and neck. “I’m happy that they’ll be getting a second chance at love.”

Rohan sighed, a weight lifting off his chest as he wrapped his arms tightly around his wife to draw her closer. “Then I’m glad. Once Isabelle is removed from your soul and we’re settled in our new home, I’ll tell him the truth about the past.” He leaned his head against her chest, and Belle gladly cuddled him the way she did their son, rubbing and massaging his taut back and shoulders. A low groan rumbled deep in his throat, the sound vibrating against her chest, showing how much he liked what she was doing.

“Only that I’m worried about the vision I saw yesterday. I keep worrying that something will happen when I’m not around him, and that I’ll walk out at any moment to see Evenly crying over his body…” Belle muttered softly. The weight of the thought, which had lingered with her since morning, dimmed the joy of the moment. “I don’t know how we can stop it from happening.”

Rohan was silent for a moment. He hadn’t been able to shake those thoughts from his mind either since she’d told him about it. “Some things are inevitable when they’re destined,” he said quietly. “But I’ll do everything I can to keep your vision from coming true once I know you’re not in danger of the land of the dead anymore tomorrow.”

He leaned more into her touch, letting it calm the heaviness in his chest. For now, he couldn’t think about anything else except what tomorrow might bring after Isabelle was removed.

“Did you exhaust yourself helping the witch?” Belle asked, her lips pursed slightly, feeling his warm breath as he nuzzled against the swell of her breast.

“No, I just can’t wait for everything to be over so we can finally be at peace. It’s damn stressful to carry worries around all day. Tsk. I didn’t exhaust myself helping her. I only inspected the things she prepared for tomorrow, and afterward, I went to speak with some of the officials, hoping to get any useful information about the king’s plan. So no, I’m not exhausted, I’m just stressed. Whenever I hold you or I’m close to you, it makes me want to relax,” he breathed against her chest, his warm breath tickling her skin and stirring a slow, delicious heat low in her stomach.

Belle didn’t stop rubbing his back as she leaned her chin against his head. “Then I’ll always be here for you to relax and rest on. And when this is all over, you can hold me for as long as you want every morning,” she whispered, her eyes shifting beyond him to where their son lay fast asleep on the bed, his little butt thrust into the air in his usual sleeping position.

Rohan chuckled thickly, the deep sound vibrating against her. “I like the sound of that. I like it so much. I want to experience a normal married life, one where the husband only thinks about ordinary things, not about his family being in danger. I want to feel those peaceful moments we once had in the cottage, when Angel was first welcomed into our world. I want to wake up to warm summer mornings with my wife nestled in my arms. I want to help you in the kitchen, take part in the house chores, live without fear hanging over us.”

He moved his lips and pressed them against the dark mark on her shoulder, the unstable bond between them. He felt the warmth of her emotions through it and knew she was reminiscing about those good old days too.

Belle smiled at his words, quietly marveling at how much her husband had changed over the years. The man who once craved power, extravagance, and control now longed for a simple, peaceful life. She couldn’t help but think it was true what they say, people’s hearts have a way of softening when they love deeply enough. One person’s warmth can slowly rub off on the other, reshaping edges that once seemed unchangeable.

She basked in the warmth of the moment, letting her mind slowly digest and come to terms with the reality that tomorrow, she would finally be free from Isabelle’s spirit fragment and become her own person completely.

Yet, somewhere deep in her heart, the fear that had long been lurking for awhile now refused to be silenced. She couldn’t fully convince herself that everything would go as planned, that Isabelle would truly be at rest once it was over. The fear clung stubbornly despite how much she tried to silent it, rising doubts about their entire plan and whether it would ever succeed.

She sank her fingers into her husband’s hair, gently massaging his scalp while listening to the howling wind outside their window and the steady crackle of the fireplace. The logs were burning down to glowing coals, the same ones her son would, by morning, excitedly gather and hide away in the little chest beneath their bed, along with all his treasured drawings.

The quiet familiarity of the scene wrapped around her, warm like a promise she desperately wanted to believe in and keep.

She let the comfortable silence last a moment longer before breaking it, finally ready to say something she had wanted to for a while but had held back.

“There’s something you should know,” she whispered, moving his head away from her breast so she could look into his lazy, content eyes.

“What is it?”

Belle placed both hands on his ears to keep him from leaning his head back until she finished speaking. “I think I might be pregnant again,” she confessed softly. She noticed the easy smile on his face slowly fade as his eyes trailed down to her stomach.

“How did you know?” he asked, still looking at her flat belly. When she’d been pregnant with Angel, neither of them had known at first, not until the sickness began and he sensed the new heartbeat growing inside her.

“I’m not certain yet,” she admitted, “but I’ve missed my monthly bleeding. It’s never happened to me before except when I was pregnant with Angel. Perhaps there’s another reason other than pregnancy?” Her voice carried a touch of uncertainty.

She wasn’t entirely sure, but she wanted Rohan to know there might be a possibility she was already carrying their second child, especially since, for the past month, after every time they made love, she hadn’t taken those little pills like candy. They’d even left them behind in Aragonia.

“Then I’ll get a doctor to check you tomorrow after the witch’s rituals are over,” Rohan declared, unwilling to take any chances if she truly was pregnant. He hadn’t felt the presence of a new heartbeat the way he had with their son, but that didn’t mean he would dismiss her words. Missing a month of her bleeding was enough for him to act.

But he couldn’t help the sudden bead of sweat forming on the back of his neck at the thought of it, because quite honestly, he could never forget what had happened during Angel’s birth and the pain-filled, exhausting process that had nearly broken him with fear.

Belle noticed the way his eyes were fixed on her stomach, as if lost in thought. She could feel the quiet tension radiating from him, the kind that came from equal parts worry and love. Even though they hadn’t avoided the possibility of pregnancy, the reality of it troubled him more than he cared to admit.

“What if it turns out I’m pregnant?” Belle asked softly, pulling his attention back to her face.

“Then I’m taking you away from here the moment you’re free from Isabelle. No argument,” Rohan replied firmly. His voice left no room for protest. “I’ll hire a midwife to watch over you day and night until the baby comes. I won’t take any chances of you being caught in any chaos in Nightbrook.”

That night, Belle didn’t win an argument against her determined husband. He didn’t even give her the chance to try. He silenced her protests with a fierce, claiming kiss that might have led to lovemaking, if Angel hadn’t chosen that very moment to wake up, cried for blood and food, and, after eating, insist on sleeping between them.

Rohan wanted to hold his wife as they lay down, but his son had other plans. The little boy pressed a kiss to his cheek and made such an adorably pleading face that Rohan couldn’t bring himself to put him back in his crib.

“Just for today,” Rohan murmured, finally giving in.

Everything that had happened that day had pushed the matter of Cordelia completely out of Belle’s mind. She drifted off to her light sleep without mentioning her to Rohan at all.

The next morning, even before the sky began to lighten, they received a visit from the witch. Rohan stepped out to invite her in, and at the same time, he instructed Rav to send the coachman to fetch a doctor afterward for his wife.
