Chapter 676: I Remember!
CHAPTER 676

“Know this, even with all your affinities, even with all your strengths and powers, you were unable to save those girls and you will still be unable to save her.”

That specific phrase kept echoing relentlessly in Grey’s mind, looping over and over as he stared ahead at the mage hovering above Clarice while their eyes locked.

The words reverberated, stabbing into his thoughts with unrelenting persistence. His eyes twitched as the sentence repeated itself, refusing to fade.

‘Wh…where have I heard this before?’

The men pinning him down were grinning maliciously, their combined weight pressing into him, their laughter echoing as they watched their leader toy with the mage below. Each chuckle pierced Grey’s concentration, but he forced himself to focus inward.

The moment he attempted to recall the origin of the words, a violent headache erupted in his skull.

The pain struck so forcefully that his vision blurred instantly.

He had experienced these headaches before, sudden and random, yet manageable—he could usually dispel them with sheer focus. But this time, no amount of control seemed to ease the searing torment.

He refused to back down.

He needed answers, and the harder he tried to summon them, the more the pain gnawed at his skull, relentless and unforgiving.

“ARGHHHH!” His scream tore through the air, high and raw.

His vision became so distorted that for a moment he could barely make out anything in front of him.

Clarice and the mage above froze as they watched him bite his lower lip so hard that crimson welts appeared, teeth piercing the flesh.

“G…Grey? What’s happening? What’s wrong? Grey?!” Clarice shouted, panic echoing in her voice as she witnessed the sudden torment consuming him.

The leader, Zodiac 5, raised an eyebrow in confusion. “Huh? What is he doing now?”

Before anyone could react, another ear-splitting cry erupted from Grey.

“ARGHHHH! My head!” His pinned hands were useless against the agony, leaving him only able to yell as blurry images flickered violently through his mind.

No matter how hard he tried to focus, the images refused to settle into clarity.

He saw himself standing in an unfamiliar room, fists clenched, hair whipping around in a phantom wind.

His features were indistinct, blurred like a half-remembered dream.

Behind him, a female figure stood, her form obvious yet her identity obscured by shadows.

In front of him, a man wearing the same mask Z5 now wore loomed menacingly.

The surroundings swirled into obscurity, the edges of the room indistinct, melting into one another.

Every attempt to focus sent stabbing pain through his skull, as if a battering ram were smashing into his mind repeatedly.

“My head, my head! ARGHHHH!” He bellowed, tears streaming freely as sorrow and helplessness tore through him.

Deep within, a different ache gripped his chest, gnawing at his soul, heavier than grief for Millie and Vanessa.

Z5’s words had triggered a pain tied to memory, something primal and unexplainable.

“I don’t know what you’re going through,” Z5 remarked, the twisted smirk beneath his mask gleaming.

“But I assure you, I’m enjoying it. Let me make it hurt even more.”

Grey strained against the pain, forcing his eyes to clear.

His vision sharpened just in time to see a massive wind sword descending towards Clarice’s abdomen.

A shadowy blade appeared simultaneously, aimed for her neck.

The sight triggered a rapid cascade of images in Grey’s mind, flashing faster than the eye could follow, heart hammering violently.

Clarice’s calm, gentle expression anchored him amidst the chaos.

She glanced down at him and spoke softly, her voice a tether.

“I don’t blame you. You’ve tried your best. I don’t hate you for what happened today, just promise me—you won’t become a villain because of this… promise me that you won’t use your abilities for evil.”

Her words struck a deep chord. The flashing memories began to slow, each frame more vivid as understanding seeped into his mind.

“Argh!” An old man shouted, clutching his chest, brows furrowed tightly in sudden agony.

A younger man with tousled brown hair sprinted toward him in panic, his expression filled with alarm.

“What happened? Why are you clutching your chest like that?” he asked, voice urgent.

“Th…this…this is bad.” The old man muttered, his tone heavy and grave.

The younger man, who went by the name Jim, raised an eyebrow in confusion.

“What is?”

The old man, one of the first generation of mages, sighed deeply and shook his head.

“The seal I placed on Grey’s memories… it’s weakening. It’s on the verge of breaking.”

Jim froze, eyes widening as shock coursed through him.

“B…but how? That was high tier magic! Nothing should have been able to touch it!”

“I don’t know,” the old man admitted, a shadow of regret crossing his features. “I just feel sorry for whoever pissed him off enough to trigger this… to give him the power to shatter my seal.”

The old man rose to his full height, resolve settling into his gaze.

“Welp, time for a massacre, because the real Supreme Magus is back.” He snapped his fingers, destroying the seal entirely.

Crash!

It was as if the sound of glass shattering exploded inside Grey’s mind.

All the blurry, hazy images that had plagued him cleared in an instant, flooding his vision with piercing clarity.

His eyes widened as memories of his past crashed into him like a tidal wave, overwhelming and vivid.

Most striking was the image of the dead woman, now sharply defined.

Grey froze, tears welling up and streaming down his face uncontrollably.

His gaze shifted to the familiar warmth of Clarice’s features, but in the next moment, her face blurred and morphed into that of another woman.

His mother.

“I…I…I remember… I… ARGHHHHHHH!” Grey’s roar tore through the ceiling, reverberating across the room and freezing Z5 mid-motion as he turned toward the source of the earth-shaking sound.

“MUM!!!” Grey bellowed, rage and grief intertwining into a forceful scream that seemed to shake the very air.

Fizzle, Fizzle, Fizzle!

Lightning crackled violently around his fingers, dancing and snapping in arcs of blinding brilliance.

Z5’s eyes widened in disbelief and alarm.

‘Ho…how is this possible? Those bracelets are powerful… he shouldn’t be able to channel ma…’

“AHHHHH!” Grey roared again, his core vibrating with a deep, resonant energy that spread like wildfire through his veins.

A tingling coolness swept over him, like plunging into a refreshing pool under the scorching desert sun.

A molten red glow pulsed beneath his skin, lighting his veins like flowing lava.

The oppressive weight of the bracelets that had once crushed him now seemed impotent, sparking as if overwhelmed by the raw electrical energy coursing through him.

With a sudden, explosive surge, the bracelets shattered in an instant, and a gust of wind erupted outward, throwing the men pinning him down aside like brittle leaves scattered by a storm.

His heart raced violently, pumping blood through his body with renewed intensity.

His fingers twitched, then his hands, and finally his entire body began to shimmer and glow with a faint red light.

A red wind seemed to envelop him, wrapping his frame in an ethereal, protective aura.

Grey’s eyes snapped open, the entire space within them pure white as he slowly rose, teeth grinding in determination.

Memories flashed through his mind vividly—how his mother had been impaled by a shadow sword, how he had been transported to this unfamiliar world of warriors, and the deadly assassin he had slain, sent by the Otherworlders.

The same organization that had now taken Millie and Vanessa and was poised to claim yet another mother figure from him.

A small shimmering light appeared on his finger, highlighting a ring.

The ring was black and red, inscribed with strange, arcane symbols that seemed to shift before his eyes.

In an instant, it fractured into tiny fragmental pellets that floated toward Grey’s nose, inhaled by him, and igniting a surge of awareness.

“H…how?!” Z5 stammered, stunned at the sheer magnitude of Grey’s awakening.

Grey did not answer. Instead, a voice, calm yet eager, resonated directly in his mind:

“Welcome back, Grey.”
